Genre: Rock | Audio Fidelity SACD #AFZ-008 | Compiled and Mastered by Steve Hoffman

Ritchie Valens was only 17 when he died in 1959. His musical legacy rests on about an album-and-a-half of completed studio material, a poorly recorded high school concert, and a handful of demos and rehearsal tapes, all of which present a problem for collections of this sort. If you include a full disc’s worth of music, you need to dip into unfinished or badly recorded material, which is a quality issue. On the other hand, if you only include finished studio projects, then you’ve got an extremely brief sequence on your hands. In the particular case of Valens, who had no real time to refine or develop his obvious talents, less is best, and that’s the route taken by the makers of this anthology. It includes Valens’ big hit, “La Bamba,” its flip side, “Donna” (which was actually the A-side, but “La Bamba” has emerged over time as Valens’ signature tune), a halting, beautiful version of “Bluebirds Over the Mountain,” and the oddly haunting “In a Turkish Town.” The sound here is as good as you’re going to get it, making this compilation an excellent purchase if you want to hear this young musician at his best. Collectors and serious fans should probably pick up one of the longer anthologies, since the demos and unfinished tracks most of them feature are certainly interesting, if hardly essential.

Remastering Note:
It was a thrill for us to be able to use the original Ritchie Valens Gold Star Studio master tapes for the mastering of this special AUDIO FIDELITY SACD. The tapes are over 44 years old, and reveal the earthy excitement and groundbreaking musical artistry of the legendary 17 year old Ritchie Valens. We would like to thank Ritchie’s original producer Bob Keane, for bringing us the precious masters and for supervising the mastering session. Even though careful listening reveals some sonic shortcomings, inherent in the masters, we feel that this music deserves the deluxe High Resolution SACD treatment. Hence this disc. We hope you enjoy it.

An amazing journey to the head Sangoma (Shaman) of the Zulu nation was the inspiration for this magnificent album. A brilliantly produced musical and poetic experience by one of the most powerful voices you will ever hear.

“Into The Heart Of The Sangoma” is the first album in over 10 years from Ann Mortifee; legendary singer / composer / playwright / actress / spiritual teacher. A personal journey back to her South African homeland, guided by the wisdom and visions of the Sangoma, the shaman of the Zulu nation. A powerful journey, riveting in its scope and Ann Mortifee’s four-octave vocal power. Featuring studio, live, and field recordings from an actual Zulu blood ceremony. An incredible journey of empowerment.

Ann Mortifee’s artistic path has crossed so many boundaries and disciplines; good luck to anyone trying to create a succinct overview of it all. Born in South Africa, Ann left for Canada when her father, a politician against apartheid, decided it was best to move his family elsewhere. In Vancouver, she began performing in coffeehouses at the age of 16, and discovered by the legendary Josh White Sr, who became her mentor/advisor. From there, Ann went on to compose the score and star in “The Ecstasy of Rita Joe” (with Chief Dan George and Paul Horn), co-host a TV Show (“Both Sides Now”), star in the record-setting “Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris” (she was discovered by EMI producer Norman Newell at the New York shows); all the while composing for BBC TV, National Film Board Of Canada, and various ballet companies (including the North Carolina Dance Co). Her first solo LP, “Baptism”, was recorded at Abbey Road Studios and released worldwide on EMI. Her albums have been on EMI, United Artists, Warner, and her own Jabula label. At the height of her first flush of success, Ann left it all to travel for three years into the heart of Beirut and Calcutta (where she worked with Mother Teresa). These life experiences became “Journey to Kairos”, a stage show/album/award wining TV special. It cemented her reputation as a musical pioneer, creating world music before it became as defined as it is today.

Someone who is approaching 70 and calls his album “All Is One” obviously has something to say. Just recently Allan Taylor faced one of life’s tests – a severe shoulder disfunction prevented him from playing guitar – not an easy situation for a musician. In the meantime that is thankfully all healed and forgotten. Not shying away from the strain and frustration involved, he worked his way back to his instrument, his fans and to the recording studio at Stockfisch Records. He could have presented this album as a big comeback, a resurrection, but that is simply not the style of this master of contemplative tones.

On previous albums Allan Taylor sang songs about the road, about all the different countries and all the hotel rooms… The new album goes deeper – into time and ultimately to the recognition: “All is one”. A powerful philosophical statement delivered with virtuoso lightness.

Insiders will recognise a stringent continuation of his 2009 album “Leaving At Dawn”. Even then it was about leaving, about long journeys, the poetry of movement – subjects even more strongly represented on this album. Instead of driving on asphalt it’s about moving through time, and the title song is the best example. He wrote the first lines back in 2004, which kept flickering back to him and could finally now be completed. The lyrics tell of old guitars and of velvet gloves which close doors – but the song is a long way from drowning in sentimental resignation. Those who can read between the lines will discover a clever mixture of dance and march: “One final dance unites us all”.

Caroline Henderson is a Danish–Swedish pop and jazz singer. She moved to Copenhagen from Sweden in 1983 and become one of Denmark’s top talents.

A surprising album, exploratory jazz on a true surround recording (vocals from 1 channel only, usually female in the center, sometimes female on the left and male on the right, and instruments left and right, hall echo from the surrounds). More alive than other popular female jazz artists on a piano, this album brings some freshness into this area. Recommended. ~~ Reiview from www.sa-cd.net

Hideaki Ishi ( 石 英明 ), better known by his stage name DJ Krush, is a record producer and DJ. He is known for his atmospheric instrumental production which incorporates sound elements from nature and extensive use of jazz and soul samples. Aside from being considered one of the pioneers of Japanese hip hop, Ishi has established himself as one of the most respected artists and producers in the hip hop industry, both in Japan and abroad. He is prefers to exercise an ideological distance from the genres he is usually grouped into, while maintaining a healthy appreciation for all music forms and styles. “Jaku” is his eighth solo album. It features guest appearances from American rappers Mr. Lif and Aesop Rock, both of whom were signed to the Definitive Jux label at that time.

As electronica’s golden-era operators moved closer to the middle of their careers (to say the end would be cruel), many showed signs of incorporating techniques that were too close to smooth jazz for comfort. There are times on DJ Krush’s 13th when it appears that he too had fallen victim to middle age, regardless of the traditional Japanese music (mostly flute) used as justification. But it’s not a total loss, as Krush, even at the height of his acclaim as the Japanese face of insider hip-hop, always found ways to connect his lotus flower-smooth style of production to Western headz grown up on edgier beats. Here, Krush does the trick by inviting two of indie hip-hop’s hottest MCs, Mr. Lif and Aesop Rock, to appear on “Nosferatu” and “Kill Switch,” respectively. And while Aesop’s blunt delivery is too rough for the china-shop tunes Krush creates, Lif does an excellent job upping the tension on the line without snapping it. Jaku isn’t entirely fragile, although the literal translation of “tranquility” holds consistently true. “Decks-athron,” with turntablist Tatsuki, finds the two fiercely dueling on the ones and twos, passing through warps in time and space, then coming out on the other side to battle again. “Road to Nowhere,” with its beats and sleigh bells, could be edged out as a Madlib leftover were it not for the fact that Tokyo’s Major Force label did this stuff (and released it on Krush’s original Mo’ Wax home) years earlier. With seniority comes a certain entitlement. And Krush had earned his dues.

Rainbow ditched vocalist Graham Bonnet after Down to Earth, hiring former Fandango singer Joe Lynn Turner as their frontman. As it turns out, Turner is less hyperbolic than his predecessor, which fits the focused polish of Difficult to Cure. Where Down to Earth was a streamlined version of early Rainbow, Difficult to Cure is a shot at crossover. Problem is, the band never comes up with the right crossover songs. Russ Ballard’s “I Surrender” comes close, but much of the record is fairly undistinguished, riding on strident melodies and big riffs that are never quite memorable. It’s all given a contemporary sheen, with plenty of studio gloss that now instantly evokes the early ’80s. On that level, it’s somewhat of an entertaining artifact — anyone pining for an example of what album-oriented radio sounded like in the pre-MTV years should check this out — but it’s never more than that, since the bids at chart success are only occasionally memorable (“I Surrender,” “Magic”). Perhaps Ritchie Blackmore felt stifled by the exacting nature of Difficult to Cure’s attempt at crossover — witness how “Spotlight Kid” veers from a dexterous Blackmore solo to a ridiculous keyboard run, then just verges on collapse — and that’s the reason why each side ends with a pretentious pseudo-classical instrumental that functions as nothing more than a guitar showcase. Certainly, his playing is impeccable, but both numbers are really awkward (particularly the title track, based on Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and with a weirdly synthesized pulse as a rhythmic underpinning) and just highlight the fact that Difficult to Cure would have been better if Blackmore had channeled that energy into the rest of the album.

Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll may be singer Ronnie James Dio’s last album with Rainbow, but at least he went out on a high note. While the material is not quite as strong as on the previous studio effort, Rising, Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll maintains the momentum the band had built up. “Kill the King” had been previously heard on the live On Stage record, but here it sounds more fully realized. Also, the title track from the album stands as one of the best songs the band did, not to mention a noble sentiment. The chugging “L.A. Connection” is another highlight. As with all of their first four albums, this one was produced by Martin Birch (who produced everyone from Blue Öyster Cult to Wayne County), and he really knows how to get the best out of the band by this point. The result is that the songs couldn’t sound any better, so even if some of the material isn’t quite up to their best, the album is still very cohesive, steady, and, ultimately, satisfying. This would turn out to be the last great album Rainbow would ever make, although they did enjoy a great deal of chart success in the post-Dio era.

On their second release, Rainbow not only avoid the sophomore jinx; they hit a home run. After replacing the entire band (except Ronnie James Dio) immediately following the recording of the first album, Ritchie Blackmore and the Rising lineup (Blackmore; Dio; Tony Carey, keys; Jimmy Bain, bass; and the late, great Cozy Powell, drums) had plenty of time on the road touring the first album to get the chops and material together for their second. In particular, “Stargazer” really came together on the 1975 tour and featured stunning keyboard work from Carey. The material is uniformly strong, with “Starstruck” and “A Light in the Black” standing out in particular. Ronnie Dio turns in a great vocal on the stunningly direct (under three minutes!) “Do You Close Your Eyes.” All six songs on the album are up there with anything the band has done, before or since. The playing has a very tight, colorful feel to it, which was lacking a bit on the first record. This album can legitimately be mentioned in the same breath as classic Deep Purple.

Perhaps the first example of “dragon rock” — a style perfected by bands like Iron Maiden and Dio in the early to mid-’80s — was Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, a rather pretentious 1975 collection from the guitarist’s first post-Deep Purple project. Fittingly enough, a young Ronnie James Dio provides the goblin-like frontman presence required by the increasingly Baroque Blackmore. The young Dio is at his best when he fully gives in to his own and Blackmore’s medieval fantasy leanings, in hard-rocking tracks like “Sixteenth Century Greensleeves” and “Man on the Silver Mountain.” The dark, trudging doom rock of “Self Portrait” most clearly showcases what they were capable of. The album’s ponderous lyrics are occasionally punctuated by poetic phrases such as “crossbows in the firelight.” Rainbow become a true embarrassment when they try to lighten up and boogie down. “If You Don’t Like Rock ]n’ Roll” is really an abomination, a pale imitation of second-rate radio-rockers like BTO. Although Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow provides a few listenable tracks, its primary value is historical. Look to Rainbow’s next album, Rainbow Rising (1976), to grasp the heavy metal potential that is only hinted at here.

In listening to the Symphonie Fantastique we immediately sense the light & frothy, ineffably ‘French’ sound that Munch is able to draw forth from the Boston Symphony players. The rubato phrasing in the 1st movement is enchanting & we are amazed by the see-into transparency revealed by the shuffling of the instrumentalists during quiet passages. The phrasing of the 1st violins is exquisitely delicate. Forte passages are wall-to-wall, with the idee-fixe carried by the trumpet deep to the right. Munch has supple control of the crescendi & decrescendi. The listener is drawn into Boston Symphony Hall through space & time by the transparency of the details & the realism of the dynamics. In the 4th movement we note the superb layering & depth in the counterpoint of the tympani & clarinet. Berlioz pulls out all the stops in the finale & we are treated to the clanging gong, trombones, tubas & breathy flutes. Overall, the music is fluid & breathtakingly dynamic.
…I have always heard good things about this recording. Yet, never owned it in any incarnation before. As a performance, the strongest parts have to be, to me any way, the 1st & last movements. I dare say, the march to the scaffold is less harrowing than many other recordings. Though, compared to the Paray SACD, this is quite a bit better.
My benchmark, previous to this, has been the Chicago/Solti recording. Performance wise, I will always enjoy that one for the ferocity of the Scaffold movement & the woodwind/brass playing.
Don’t hesitate to get this if you enjoy a good performance.
Soundwise, not an amazing release, but from my knowledge of previous versions, it seems better.

The tenth album from the French singer/songwriter whose music is a blend of contemporary folk, blues rock, French pop, smooth jazz, & even classical…

Varied as it is, the music of Francis Cabrel never strays far from his basic songwriting tools: the acoustic guitar and gentle reflections on life. His clear voice and clean guitar are ever the focus of his songs. Around this core he weaves contemporary folk, blues rock, French pop, smooth jazz, and even classical sounds. His lyrics have received much attention among French-speaking audiences and critics, and his albums sell well in those circles. His style has also sparked a revival of interest in acoustic music in France. Cabrel’s involvement in music began at his lycée (secondary school) in southwestern France. Inspired by Bob Dylan’s music, he taught himself to play guitar. He joined up with a group called the Maïna Pub (later changed to les Virginys) which covered songs by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix. The group eventually sublimated, and Cabrel began performing solo and working on his own material. In 1974, he entered a contest for singer/songwriters in the southwest France and walked away with first place. The stated prize was the opportunity to record a 45 single, but the judges were so impressed that they asked him to record an LP instead. The resulting album, Les Murs de Poussière, was released in 1977. Cabrel and his record company were displeased with the sound and success (respectively) of the album, but Cabrel moved to Paris and continued to perform in public. He released his second album, Les Chemins de Traverse, in 1979. The second single from the album, “Je l’Aime à Mourir,” gained the attention of French listeners, and Cabrel became nationally recognized. In the early ’80s, Cabrel released Fragile (1980), Carte Postale (1981), and Quelqu’un de l’Intérieure (1983); these albums generated hits and sold well in France. During these years Cabrel built an audience in Quebec also by touring both solo and with a band. Having garnered considerable success with his three previous albums, Cabrel changed his pace and approach in the mid-’80s. He released a live album (Cabrel Public) in 1984, a studio album (Photos de Voyages) in 1985 and a compilation (w-87) in 1987. He moved back to southwestern France, set up his own studio, turned more of his attention to his family, and released albums of new material at a leisurely pace. He continued this pattern in the late ’80s and through the ’90s with Sarbacane (1989), d’Une Ombre à l’Autre (a 1991 live three-disc set), and Samedi Soir sur la Terre (1994). Each release was greatly anticipated in France and Quebec, and all sold well. The two albums of original material (Sarbacane and Samedi Soir sur la Terre) did particularly well, and each went multi-platinum. Hors-Saison was released in 1999 following a 5-year break and Cabrel supported it with a national tour and an impressive 10-day stint at the Olympia in Paris. During the early part of the noughties, Cabrel took part in a series of concerts entitled Autour du Blues alongside international artists such as Patrick Verbeke, Tanya Saint Val and David Johnson. Following these shows his tenth record, Les Beaux Dégâts, was released in 2004. The album featured a new dynamic to Cabrel’s sound with a brass section bringing his songs to life and included a guest performance from Autor du Blues tour-mate David Johnson. Carbel returned in 2008 with Des Roses et des Orties which undertook an array of political and social issues that resonate strongly throughout the entire record. He also included a handful of French adaptations of work by Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater Revival and J.J. Cale.

John Hammond’s blues career has spanned the better part of the last five decades. From coffeehouses to concert halls, to festivals and beyond, Hammond emerged the ever-consummate blues man out of the great blues renaissance of the 60’s. And while the 60’s renaissance was largely an electric affair, Hammond has managed to keep vital the embodiment of the quintessential acoustic blues troubadour with brilliant acoustic guitar and rack harmonica playing and an impassioned voice. A Grammy Award winner and four time nominee, Hammond is also a multiple W.C. Handy award winner and has shared the stage and/or recorded with many of the masters, including Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf.

John Hammond, Jr. has produced many hallmark albums during a 50-year career and 35 recordings, but Rough & Tough might top them all. Playing solo on a variety of guitars, a harmonica, and singing up a storm, Hammond acoustically interprets songs of the legendary bluesmen that established the urban Chicago train of thought. His choices should be very familiar to most blues fans, but the way he plays them are a throwback to pre-electric, back-porch days, when simplicity was the norm rather than amped-up volume. The energy is within Hammond’s soul, and he lets it loose for every track of this extraordinary album. Interpreting songs by Muddy Waters and Little Walter comes naturally, but he also tackles tunes like Howlin’ Wolf’s “My Mind Is Ramblin’,” and especially the low-down and dirty “No Place to Go,” “Statesboro Blues,” “It Hurts Me Too,” and the delightful swing jazz classic “Chattanooga Choo Choo” are included, as well as Jerry McCain’s more contemporary “She’s Tough.” Two originals by Hammond, “Slick Crown Vic” in boogie mode and the easygoing “Come to Find Out” are unearthed from previous recordings, emphasizing that he also stands proud as a presence among these giants. This is a flawless example of John Hammond’s capabilities in presenting authentic blues with a feeling and passion that few artists can match, and comes with a high recommendation, and a well-deserved 2009 Grammy nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album.

ESP marks the beginning of a revitalization for Miles Davis, as his second classic quintet – saxophonist Wayne Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Tony Williams – gels, establishing what would become their signature adventurous hard bop. Miles had been moving toward this direction in the two years preceding the release of ESP and he had recorded with everyone outside of Shorter prior to this record, but his addition galvanizes the group, pushing them toward music that was recognizably bop but as adventurous as jazz’s avant-garde. Outwardly, this music doesn’t take as many risks as Coltrane or Ornette Coleman’s recordings of the mid-’60s, but by borrowing some of the same theories – a de-emphasis of composition in favor of sheer improvisation, elastic definitions of tonality – they created a unique sound that came to define the very sound of modern jazz. Certainly, many musicians have returned to this group for inspiration, but their recordings remain fresh, because they exist at this fine dividing line between standard bop and avant. On ESP, they tilt a bit toward conventional hard bop (something that’s apparent toward the end of the record), largely because this is their first effort, but the fact is, this difference between this album and hard bop from the early ’60s is remarkable. This is exploratory music, whether it’s rushing by in a flurry of notes or elegantly reclining in Hancock’s calm yet complex chords. The compositions are brilliantly structured as well, encouraging such free-form exploration with their elliptical yet memorable themes. This quintet may have cut more adventurous records, but ESP remains one of their very best albums.

Already a sensation in his native England, 22-year-old piano man Jamie Cullum comes off like a hip amalgamation of Harry Connick, Jr. and Randy Newman on his sophomore effort, Twentysomething.

As with Blue Note’s crossover wunderkind Norah Jones, Cullum works best when he’s not trying too hard to please hardcore jazz aficionados, but it’s not too difficult to imagine his bonus-track version of Pharrell Williams’ “Frontin’” turning some jazz fans onto the Neptunes. Showcasing Cullum’s sardonic wit and lounge-savvy attitude, the album deftly flows from singer/songwriter love songs to jazzy barroom romps and reappropriated modern rock tunes. Cullum has a warm voice with a slight rasp that retains a bit of his Brit accent even though his influences — Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Tom Waits — are resolutely American. Truthfully, Cullum isn’t the most accomplished vocalist and his piano chops are pleasant at best — Oscar Peterson he ain’t. That said, he’s still a kick. What he lacks in technique he makes up for in swagger and smarts as many of his original compositions reveal. On the swinging and wickedly humorous title track — a take on postgraduate slackerdom — Cullum sardonically laments, “After years of expensive education, a car full of books and anticipation, I’m an expert on Shakespeare and that’s a hell of a lot but the world don’t need scholars as much as I thought.” It’s a timely statement in our overeducated, underemployed “dot-bomb” economy and deftly posits Cullum as a jazz singer as much of as for his generation. Also compelling are his choices of cover tunes, as he is able to imprint his own persona on the songs while magnifying what made them brilliant to begin with. To these ends, Jeff Buckley’s “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” gets a gut-wrenchingly minimalist treatment and Radiohead’s “High and Dry” comes off as the best Bruce Hornsby song you’ve never heard. Conversely, Cullum treats jazz standards as modern pop tunes, reworking them into contemporary styles that are neither cynical nor awkward. In fact, his atmospheric, ’70s AM pop take on “Singin’ in the Rain,” replete with string backgrounds and Cullum’s percolating Rhodes keyboard, is one of the most appealing cuts on the album, lending the Great American Songbook warhorse an air of virginity.

Despite the title and the cover of this reissue (which makes it appear that the performances are greatly influenced by music of the Far East), the style played by guitarist Pat Martino’s quartet is very much in the hard bop tradition. Martino was already developing his own sound and is in excellent form with pianist Eddie Green, drummer Lenny McBrowne, and either Ben Tucker or Tyrone Brown on bass during two group originals, Benny Golson’s “Park Avenue Petite,” John Coltrane’s “Lazy Bird,” and the standard “Close Your Eyes.” It’s a good example of Pat Martino’s playing in his early period.

On the heels of Metallica’s similarly conceived S&M comes the Scorpions’ Moment of Glory, a presentation of past favorites (plus three new songs) with full orchestral backing courtesy of the Berlin Philharmonic. The rock instrumentation blends in best on the ballads, but some of the up-tempo rockers can also be pretty exciting, if a little bombastic. That said, the Scorpions’ music isn’t always complex enough to suggest interesting ways of augmenting the original arrangements – but since this is more a specialty item for diehards in the first place, that won’t likely matter in the end. Some fans may be disappointed that Klaus Meine gives way to guest vocalists on a couple of tunes, but overall, this is a variation on the Scorpions’ signature sound that loyalists will probably enjoy quite a bit.

“Hurricane 2000,” the reworking of “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” was the official theme song to Sabres Hockey Network broadcasts.

The title track “Moment of Glory” was the official anthem of the EXPO 2000 in Hannover, Germany.

The instrumental “Deadly Sting Suite” is based on two earlier Scorpions tracks, “He’s a Woman, She’s a Man” and “Dynamite”.

The fifth track, “Crossfire” repeats the main theme of the Russian song “Moscow Nights”.

Here in My Heart, written by Diane Warren, was recorded by Tiffany 10 years earlier for her album New Inside.

The 5.1 surround mix on the SACD release includes an orchestra-only version of “Wind of Change” as a ghost track, which follows after approximately one minute of silence at the end of “Lady Starlight”.

…A gifted American jazz singer with a strong, wide-ranging voice and uncluttered style.

This isn’t Sutton’s tribute to Sinatra, although all the material here was recorded and made famous by him. Instead, it’s her working through the nooks and crannies of his songbook, and bringing things out and putting her own particular polish on them. It could be something with strings, such as “What’ll I Do?” or the intimacy of “I’ll Be Around,” which is as much a plea as a reassurance and resignation. Her version of “I Think of You,” whose melody comes originally from Rachmaninov, is gloriously subtle, the emotion as softly drawn out as the syllables. “I Could Have Told You” offers comfort and a shoulder to cry on, a gentle embrace that’s almost a whisper in Sutton’s hands. The music here is at its best when the orchestra keeps away – they simply become overkill, the too-sweet icing on an already-delicious cake. Perhaps her biggest test, though, comes at the end of the album, tackling “Fly Me to the Moon,” followed by a medley of “Last Dance” and “Dancing in the Dark,” taking on some of Sinatra’s most famous pieces. While on the former Sutton doesn’t always dig to the absolute heart of the song, the arrangement is stunning, with some outstanding piano from Christian Jacob that frees the songs from its ’50s shackles. Sutton does sparkle on the other piece, however, especially “Dancing in the Dark,” where the orchestral contributions are kept to a minimum, and the tracks swings in a minimalist fashion, Sutton’s voice imbued with the magic of the night. The album might have been inspired by Sinatra, but in her own way, Sutton has gone beyond her inspiration.

Vanessa-Mae was just a teenager when her major-label debut, The Violin Player, was released. This may account for her ability to successfully fuse old-world classical styles with a contemporary new age sensibility. She comes out scorching on the Bach classic “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,” showing off her world-class talent as a revolutionary violinist. The new arrangements by producer Mike Batt add a flavorful world music appeal that both compliments and showcases her masterful skill. While all ten tracks are performed as instrumentals, Vanessa-Mae manages to squeeze every ounce of passion out of a note, transcending the necessity for lyrics. Her ability to play off of other instruments is brought to the forefront on the final track “Red Hot.” She goes toe to toe with a forceful electric guitar and her four-string violin leaves the challenging six-string in the dust. This record will delight those who are bold enough to challenge themselves by listening to a collection of songs that defy standard genre classifications.

After spending the 1980s moving in an increasingly pop-friendly direction, 1991’s We Can’t Dance marked a return to earlier aesthetics for Genesis. Edgier with more prominent guitars and live drums than on Invisible Touch, the record was the band’s strongest musical statement in over a decade. With “Driving the Last Spike” and the dark “Dreaming While You Sleep” the group revisited one of their forgotten strengths, telling extended stories. That’s not to say the album is a return to The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway or Trick of the Tail. Indeed, while there are several extended pieces on the record, there is none of the eccentricities, odd meters, or extended virtuoso solos of the band’s progressive heyday. The album’s closer, “Fading Lights,” comes the closest, featuring an outstanding instrumental mid-section. Unfortunately, the record also contains some gutless ballads and paeans for world understanding that sound miles away from any immediacy. However, the surprisingly gritty singles “No Son of Mine,” “Jesus He Knows Me,” and “I Can’t Dance” help make up for the album’s weaker moments.
