On his third aria collection for Decca, Juan Diego Flórez continues to stretch his repertory beyond the Rossini roles that established his solo career. But he never strays far, wisely sticking to roles that suit his light, gracious sound, and which make the most of his exhilarating top notes without requiring dramatic heft. Flórez is a truly special singer, one of the best put together young tenors around, and Great Tenor Arias shows him off to great effect.
Despite the album’s title, very few of the selections included are from the usual Tenors hit parade; only Verdi’s “La donna è mobile” from Rigoletto will be familiar to the casual listener. Coincidentally, that aria is the only real misfire on the album — which is not to say Flórez sings it badly; rather, his tone is just too likable, too boyishly friendly, to capture the spirit of one of opera’s most notorious bad guys. But almost every other selection on the album is spot on vocally, musically, and in character. Hearing Flórez tear into the florid coloratura of Rossini’s Semiramide can’t help but bring a smile to your face. His “J’ai perdu mon Euridice” from the less-often heard French version of Gluck’s Orphée et Euridice shows him tackling a difficult “haute-contre” tessitura with no trouble. And his “Firenze è come un albero fiorito” from Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (probably the only Puccini role Flórez is likely to sing) has the perfect blend of youthful enthusiasm and vocal thrust. In general, this collection shows that Flórez has a more colorful palette at his disposal than many light tenors. His high notes have ring and a visceral “tug,” and he can sing softly without sacrificing energy or intensity. Carlo Rizzi and the Orchestra Sinfonica e Coro di Milano Giuseppe Verdi are deluxe partners for Flórez. Great Tenor Arias is a highly enjoyable listen, and an impressive step in this young singer’s career. ~allmusicguide

Originally, this collection was put together in 1972 by Tony Stratton-Smith from outtakes of the Nice’s early stay at Immediate Records, and issued (at least, in the U.S.) with no explanation and little annotation, making it a bit confusing to longtime fans of Keith Emerson and the trio. Its timing was also unfortunate, in that a huge cache of record club copies of the Nice’s first three albums on Immediate, pressed by Columbia Special Products, had shown up in cut-out bins at just about the same time. One had to listen closely to see that everything here was an alternate take of material from the band’s first two albums. Essentially, Autumn 1967/ Spring 1968 (aka Autumn to Spring) was an outtake version of the group’s debut long-player, The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack, shorn of the two longest tracks from that album, “Rondo” and “War and Peace.” And it worked better than that record for their absence, being trippier and a lot more playfully psychedelic, especially given the slightly rougher, unfinished renditions of most of the material, which lent it a bracing freshness, compared to the final versions. And the absence of “Rondo” and “War and Peace” means that the worst excesses of Keith Emerson’s and Davy O’List’s keyboard and guitar excursions are excised, and that’s for the better — there is still some psychedelic blues-based work in the manner of Jimi Hendrix or the Creation, in the form of “Bonnie K,” and Emerson’s flourishes enhance the psychedelic textures of the album in no small way. The whole thing is more fun in this form. And this album does, indeed, capture the Nice as a four-piece with O’List in the lineup, and as a psychedelic outfit — in contrast to their later, more widely exposed work, in which the psychedelic elements receded in favor of progressive rock and classically based showpieces, here it’s the progressive elements that are in the formative stage, mostly taking the form of flourishes and cadenzas around (and occasionally breaking into) choruses and endings, on songs like “Tantalizing Maggie.” The version of “The Cry of Eugene” represented here is also preferable to the rendition on the debut album; and the quartet version of “Daddy, Where Did I Come From” (which ultimately ended up, in somewhat altered form, on their second album, Ars Longa Vita Brevis), now comes off as a lot more fun than its later rendition, although it was obviously too raunchy to be released in 1968. This reissue offers excellent sound, considerably improved over the 1972 release, and also a pair of bonus tracks — the early single “Azrael” is a curiously theatrical piece of psychedelia, and certainly as bold an attempt at a debut single as anyone ever would have heard; and “Diary of an Empty Day,” which doesn’t sound different at all from the released version, but it’s still a fun piece of early prog rock.

Five Bridges is a delectable representation of early-’70s progressive rock. Its makeup contains all of the elements needed to complete a solid prog album: a heavy intermingling of synthesizer and electric guitar, strong punctuation of both bass and drums, a central concept, and the fusing of rock and classical music, which in this case employs the Sinfonia of London. The eight tracks, centered around Newcastle’s urban structure and life in a blue collar society, are as colorful as they are intricate. “Intermezzo” from Sibelius’ Karelia Suite, and Tchaikovsky’s “Pathetique” are marvelous examples of classical and rock commingling, with the spotlight focused on Keith Emerson’s keyboard virtuosity. The second movement from Fantasia is a sparkling model of improvisational use containing various rock & roll rhythms and time structures, while the third track entitled “High Level Fugue 4th Bridge,” was inspired by Guida’s “Prelude and Fugue” and incorporates assorted jazz techniques and boogie-woogie styles into a classical recipe. “Country Pie/Brandenburg Concerto, No. 6” unites Dylan with Bach for a most extraordinary illustration of instrumental creativity. Each example of genre merging is pristine and fluid, making the actual overlapping of multiple styles completely transparent. Five Bridges may rank just a tad below The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack or Ars Longa Vita Brevis on the patience scale, but it does demonstrate how Emerson’s work with ELP came into fruition.

No new ground is broken on Cry. In fact, Simple Minds’ reliance on glistening synthesizer textures, the band’s most distinguishing characteristic when it broke in the mid-’80s, becomes the only notable detail on the disc. With unmemorable material and the vocals of Jim Kerr showing little interpretive or technical advancement, each track hangs heavily on the keyboards, which become so dominant that some guitar parts merely imitate electronic effects; the tremolo strings on “Sleeping Girl” may as well come from a sample loop. To its credit, Simple Minds has a unique sound; no matter who among the many credited keyboardists is actually playing a given part, it can’t be mistaken for the product of any other band (with the exception of the last track, Vince Clarke’s “The Floating World,” whose galloping rhythm nods obviously toward Erasure). But when sheen takes precedence over substance, and particularly when that sheen has gleamed for nearly 30 years, that says something about what’s been missing from the hearts of Simple Minds.

461 Ocean Boulevard is Eric Clapton’s second studio solo album, arriving after his side project of Derek and the Dominos and a long struggle with heroin addiction. Although there are some new reggae influences, the album doesn’t sound all that different from the rock, pop, blues, country, and R&B amalgam of Eric Clapton. However, 461 Ocean Boulevard is a tighter, more focused outing that enables Clapton to stretch out instrumentally. Furthermore, the pop concessions on the album — the sleek production, the concise running times — don’t detract from the rootsy origins of the material, whether it’s Johnny Otis’ “Willie and the Hand Jive,” the traditional blues “Motherless Children,” Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff,” or Clapton’s emotional original “Let It Grow.” With its relaxed, friendly atmosphere and strong bluesy roots, 461 Ocean Boulevard set the template for Clapton’s ’70s albums. Though he tried hard to make an album exactly like it, he never quite managed to replicate its charms.

461 Ocean Boulevard is the second solo studio album by Eric Clapton that marked his return to recording after recovering from a three-year addiction to heroin. The album title refers to the address on Ocean Boulevard in Golden Beach, Florida where Clapton lived while recording the album. The street address of the house was changed after the album’s release due to fans flocking to the property.

By 1993, alternative rock had arrived in a big way, and surprisingly, Canadian veterans Rush were game, releasing their most honest and organic rock & roll record in over a decade with Counterparts. Opener “Animate” is straightforward enough, but doesn’t even hint at the guitar ferocity and lyrical angst of “Stick it Out,” a song which undoubtedly polarizes Rush fans to this day. Intellectual melodic rockers like “Cut to the Chase,” “At the Speed of Love,” and “Everyday Glory” are also present (and less shocking), but diversity continues to rule the day with Geddy Lee’s bass taking charge on the amazingly somber “Double Agent” and the giddy instrumental “Leave That Thing Alone.” Pure hard rock resurfaces on “Cold Fire,” but it is the largely acoustic “Nobody’s Hero” which provides the album’s most gripping moment with an impassioned plea for HIV consciousness and understanding.

From the opening chant of the Yakushiji monks, it is apparent that this is going to be a special offering from Kitaro. The legendary World Music pioneer’s live album is a two-CD set recorded over three evenings in the sacred Yakushiji Temple in the ancient Japanese capital, Nara. Live in Yakushiji is a broad and deep journey, to inner realms as well as exotic earthly destinations.

With full instrumentation, Kitaro reprises nine favorite compositions from earlier albums, plus his Golden Globe Award-winning theme from the Oliver Stone film Heaven & Earth and two previously unreleased tracks. This is a tour de force for Kitaro and ensemble. All the drama, grace and humanity of his usual offerings are here with the added immediacy of the live recording and the profound spirit of the Yakushiki monks who appear on the previously unreleased “Wa” in addition to the opening track.

Without a doubt, this is the quisessential SACD for all music lovers. The sound on this disc is mindblowing and the warmth and clarity of the recording is flawless in all aspects. The discrete 5.1 surround mixing is done very tastefully and it’s almost like being right there in the recording studio with all the instruments/vocals surrounding you in sheer bliss. All tracks on this SACD are brilliant and I think Ken did a great job in picking these selections from the magnificient Telarc/Heads Up SACD range. What’s more, Ken gives you detailed info on the surround recording of each track telling you which instrument goes into which channel and the highlights to look out for in each track too. Check out the track from Ladysmith Black Mamboza, and also the Spyro Gyra and Yellowjackets tracks. These CDs serve their purpose well offering complete movements or sections of recordings available on Pentatone. The only listing of contents is on the back jewel-box cover; the booklet(s) are actually catalogs of what is available in the format. Each CD is given a full page in the booklet with complete track listings and performer informtion. I’m surprised each of the CD booklets doesn’t list all of the multi-channel recordings (both new and RQR) on the label. One features excerpts from new multi-channel recordings; the most impressive sonically are those by the Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra, New Dutch Academy, Russian National Orchestra and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra Dvorak/Tchaikovsky coupling. All of these are 5 channel recordings (left/right, front and rear, and center front).

Telarc’s seventh SACD multi – genre sampler is a great tool for reaching out to the consumer and providing a selection of jazz, pop, crossover and world music in surround. Continuing in the Telarc and Heads Up tradition, this sampler is hybrid – playable on standard CD players as well as SACD players.
This sampler features music from several of the more popular Telarc and Heads Up SACD releases of the past several years. This release is Joao Gilberto stripped down nearly to his bare essentials — his voice, guitar and the extremely spare drumming of Sonny Carr — and he’s just as mesmerizing as he’s ever been on records. The whole record is about the rhythmic clashes and dovetailings of a singer and his guitar, pitched at extremely low levels of volume yet generating volumes of drive without seeming to breathe hard. Dig the insistent way in which “Falsa Baiana” and Gilberto Gil’s marathon rhythm machine “Eu Vim Da Bahia” ride the waves of the bossa nova groove, or how Gilberto delivers one of the best renditions of Jobim’s “Aguas de Marco” — quietly relentless and to-the-point. Three of the tracks eschew words altogether — gentle syllables and/or Gilberto’s insistent guitar tell the entire story — and the final selection, “Izaura,” belatedly adds a female voice (Miucha) in the left speaker. Though recorded in a New Jersey studio — the engineer, surprisingly enough, is Wendy Carlos, the electronic music pioneer of Switched-On Bach fame — this addictive release originates from PolyGram Brazil.

After a mere three albums in just under three years, Cream called it quits in 1969. Being proper gentlemen, they said their formal goodbyes with a tour and a farewell album called — what else? — Goodbye. As a slim, six-song single LP, it’s far shorter than the rambling, out-of-control Wheels of Fire, but it boasts the same structure, evenly dividing its time between tracks cut on-stage and in the studio. While the live side contains nothing as indelible as “Crossroads,” the live music on the whole is better than that on Wheels of Fire, capturing the trio at an empathetic peak as a band. It’s hard, heavy rock, with Cream digging deep into their original “Politician” with the same intensity as they do on “Sitting on Top of the World,” but it’s the rampaging “I’m So Glad” that illustrates how far they’ve come; compare it to the original studio version on Fresh Cream and it’s easy to see just how much further they’re stretching their improvisation. The studio side also finds them at something of a peak. Boasting a song apiece from each member, it opens with the majestic classic “Badge,” co-written by Eric Clapton and George Harrison and ranking among both of their best work. It’s followed by Jack Bruce’s “Doing That Scrapyard Thing,” an overstuffed near-masterpiece filled with wonderful, imaginative eccentricities, and finally, there’s Ginger Baker’s tense, dramatic “What a Bringdown,” easily the best original he contributed to the group. Like all of Cream’s albums outside Disraeli Gears, Goodbye is an album of moments, not a tight cohesive work, but those moments are all quite strong on their own terms, making this a good and appropriate final bow.

Adelmo Fornaciari, more commonly known by his stage name Zucchero Fornaciari or simply Zucchero, is an Italian rock singer and Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. His music is largely inspired by gospel, soul and rock music, and alternates between ballads and more rhythmic boogie-like pieces. Zucchero’s voice is gritty and textured, but he sings with a great sensitivity and lyricism, and these same qualities are mirrored in his songwriting. By blending blues, pop, and adult contemporary, Zucchero’s music can be quite affecting. He is credited as the “father of Italian blues”, introducing blues to the big stage in Italy. Zucchero is one of the few European blues artists who still enjoy great international success.

Adelmo Fornaciari is the real name of the talented Italian musician more commonly known to the world by his nickname Zucchero (“Sugar”), given to him by an elementary school teacher. He began playing the guitar in his home province of Reggio Emilia, focusing on music in the blues/R&B mold. As a teenager in the early ’70s, he founded a local band called Le Nuove Luci. He formed another group, Sugar and Candies, in 1978, and began writing as well – Italian pop songs for other artists, and more blues-oriented material for himself.

Zucchero garnered a great deal of success in 1981 when he won the Castrocaro Festival, which led to performances at the 1982 and 1983 Sanremo Festivals. Increased exposure gave him a chance to release his own solo album, 1983’s Un Po’ Di Zucchero. His song “Donne”, performed with the newly formed Zucchero & the Randy Jackson Band, caused a sensation at the 1985 Sanremo Festival; even though “Donne” didn’t win, it did become a hit. This introduced the Zucchero blend of Italian pop and electric blues to a larger audience. During the late ’80s and early ’90s, he became one of the best-selling artists in Italy and a favorite all over Europe. He performed at 1994’s Woodstock Festival, and appeared with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, the Scorpions, and Luciano Pavarotti; still, his worldwide audience remained limited. In the new millennium, Zucchero’s success continued as a performer and an award-winning songwriter.
