In the expansive acoustic of Hereford Cathedral, these three musicians draw the listener into a late-Romantic world of outstanding and strikingly idiomatic ensemble music. Yet none of these pieces are, in fact, original trumpet and organ works. The transformation from a violin, cello and organ piece – in the case of the Rheinberger Suite – reveals an extraordinary new 19th-century sound world of dazzling dialogues, wide dynamic range and beguiling lyricism. As composers could not imagine the potential of the medium in the decades either side of 1900, The Trumpets That Time Forgot deliberately makes up for ‘lost time’ and re-establishes the trumpet as a solo protagonist in what is supposed to be barren land for all but the cornet showpiece.

The results bring not merely classical respectability but a stunning aural feast of Gothic splendour and surprising intimacy. The Strauss movements provide a trio of light vignettes between the significant four-movement Rheinberger Suite (a Concerto in all but name) and Elgar’s Sonata. In the case of the latter, this version provides a new dimension to a work which Elgar composed originally as the Severn Suite for brass band and reworked as his 2nd Organ Sonata. Here, the two worlds meet in the middle.

Stephen Lawrence “Steve” Winwood is an English musician whose genres include rock, blue-eyed soul, rhythm and blues, blues rock, pop rock, and jazz. A multi-instrumentalist, he can play keyboards, bass guitar, drums, guitar, mandolin, violin, and other strings. Winwood was a key member of The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Go.

Utterly unencumbered by the baggage of his long years in the music business, Winwood reinvents himself as a completely contemporary artist on this outstanding album, leading off with his best solo song, “While You See a Chance.” Winwood also plays all the instruments.

Texas took a bit of time to deliver the follow-up to Hush — an indication that the group was either aware that some fans didn’t feel the record was up to snuff, or an indication that the group wasn’t quite sure where to go next, a theory bolstered by the appearance of a greatest-hits album — a traditional measure for a band biding their time. When they finally did release their sixth album, Careful What You Wish For, in the fall of 2003, times had changed: they were no longer a shoo-in for the top of the U.K. charts, nor did they have a U.S. contract. Faced with this situation, the group crafted a very safe, very mature, very British set of soulful adult pop. There are the usual concessions to hipness — a few of the beats gleam with modernity, there is the de rigueur cameo from rappers — but this is solidly a smooth, soulful collection of well-crafted pop that intentionally plays it safe. It’s not quite as lush as Hush, which highlighted Sharleen Spiteri’s sexiness, nor is it the crackerjack, stylish, modern, blue-eyed soul of White on Blonde, which remains their highwater mark. Instead, it’s a straight-ahead album that plays to their strengths without exploiting them. In other words, while this is certainly enjoyable as it spins, it doesn’t provide many memorable moments. Since the band consciously tried to construct an album that evokes their best work, that’s not an entirely surprising result — they’re so intent on delivering a specific sound, they’ve neglected to spend as much time on the songs — and it’s not a bad result, either, at least on the surface. But once you dig beneath the surface, there’s not as much to offer as on White on Blonde, and, for that matter, the surface doesn’t glisten as seductively as on Hush, either.

For this excellent effort, Nnenna Freelon solidifies her position as one of the better female jazz singers of the 1990s. Her appealing voice and versatility are well displayed throughout a set that includes a 5/4 version of “Out of This World,” the folk song “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” “Birk’s Works,” “I Thought About You,” “Nature Boy,” and three originals. Freelon is ably assisted by her regular rhythm section of the period (pianist Bill Anschell, bassist John Brown, and drummer Woody Williams), and there are worthwhile guest spots for guitarist Scott Sawyer, Rickey Woodard on tenor and soprano, and Alex Acuna on congas.

When Feeder drummer Jon Lee unexpectedly took his own life in January 2002, the fate of the band was in question. Founding members Grant Nicholas and Taka Hirose had reservations about carrying on without their mate; however, Lee’s family urged them to continue. Nicholas and Hirose and ex-Skunk Anansie drummer Mark Richardson spent most of that year crafting a dark, reflective set of songs. Comfort in Sound is Feeder’s fourth album and a touching tribute to Lee. Featuring Feeder’s most intimate and cohesive material to date, Comfort in Sound finds the group’s peace of mind, but the album as a whole isn’t exactly uplifting. The post-alternative mix of acoustic and electric guitars works with Nicholas’ obvious emotional struggles. Moods and tempos are consistent in change, and such moves make Comfort in Sound as solid as it is. From the crunchy licks of “Come Back Around” to the positive energy of “Forget About Tomorrow,” Comfort in Sound waltzes along without getting lost in song and craft. This album was a journey for Nicholas and Hirose. They came out on the other side with a greater appreciation for Feeder and a brand new musical freshness. Comfort in Sound is their proof of surviving tragedy and it’s a great moment.

Alyn Cosker has quickly established a reputation as a formidable jazz drummer and is an exciting new talent in the vibrant Scottish jazz scene. Alyn has poured his experience and chameleon-like taste into the original compositions on Lyn’s Une, his debut album, and jazz, rock, funk, latin and celtic styles are all in evidence. He is the winner of Scottish Jazz Awards 2009 (Best Drummer).

Joining Alyn on Lyn’s Une are some of the most exciting and versatile young musicians on the Scottish music scene including Ross Hamilton, Jason Rebello and Paul Towndrow. Lyn’s Une features exciting, intelligent and rhythmic music played by virtuoso musicians with genuine passion! Lyn’s Une is not, as it may sound, a historical Celtic reference, but was in fact the result of a computer error when the score for the track ‘Alyn’s Tune’ was accidentally saved as Lyn’s Une. Thus a new title was born!

The album is a blend of ballads and big brassy numbers with each featuring a different combination of musicians creating a varied and appealing sound. ‘Twitter and Bisted’ was written especially for the album to incorporate all of the musicians and the tremendous humour that follows them all about.

Matthew Carl Lien is a Yukon, Canada based World music singer-songwriter and producer. His primary lyrical and musical focus is on environmental and cultural themes. Preferring his native San Diego to Los Angeles, he discovered Signature Sound recording studios in San Diego, California, which is owned by his friend and musician/producer Luis Arteaga whom he met earlier at Mix Masters, where he recorded most of his albums to date, with the exception of his Hybrid SACD “Arctic Refuge” which was recorded at Bryan Adams’ Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He now has a fan base of millions in Taiwan and China, where he is known for his environmental music and his work with aboriginal and traditional cultures.

It’s been 17 years since Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s gorgeous vocal harmonies poured the foundation for Paul Simon’s landmark 1986 album Graceland, an album that catapulted the South African a cappella gospel group into the international consciousness and led to worldwide stardom, a Grammy, film soundtracks, and candy commercials. Fans of the group’s intricately arranged vocal landscapes will be pleased to know that all that ensuing attention hasn’t diluted the group’s appeal. Their latest album, Raise Your Spirit Higher, is as strong as anything the group has recorded in its now 30-year career. Ladysmith has always defined itself by merging Christian gospel music with a native South African musical tradition called isicathamiya, which was developed by mine workers who sang to entertain themselves after their grueling work. That tradition continues here, with several tracks like “Uqinisul’ Ubada (Lord is the Light and Truth)” and “Udidekil’ Umhlaba (Lord’s Work)”, devoted to Christian themes. Since the group sings in their native Zulu, however, Ladysmith’s international appeal has always been in the stunning variety of sounds they are able to produce with their voices alone, and Raise Your Spirit Higher is no exception. The percussive clicking sounds on “Selingelethu Sonke” and Wangibambezela” are otherworldly, and the gorgeous call-and-response between leader Joseph Shabalala and the group on “Wenza Ngani?” shows that the group’s polish hasn’t lost anything since “Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes.” The most moving track on the album though, is the closing “Tribute”, sung by Shabalala’s grandsons in tribute to their grandmother, tragically murdered in 2002 during the recording of this album.

2008 album from the Grammy Award-winning South African vocal group. Ilembe is a tribute to the South African cultural icon Shaka Zulu. In the late 1700s, Shaka Zulu united the Zulus with various neighboring tribes into a single powerful force that helped give birth to a proud nation. Today, Shaka Zulu is regarded as one of the greatest leaders in African history. His combination of warrior discipline, visionary leadership, innate creativity, and unshakable belief in a united nation continues to resonate to this day in South Africa. He is revered as the single figure who gave birth to the indomitable fighting spirit of the Zulus: the same spirit that enabled South Africans to persevere amid the European domination of their homeland for nearly two centuries of apartheid. Ilembe celebrates not only Shaka Zulu but the sense of perseverance, creativity and pride that he has inspired in generations of descendants.

One thing about Ladysmith Black Mambazo is that you know exactly what you’re getting. Wonderful vocal phrases and answering, and with Ilembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu, it does what it says on the tin, honoring the great leader who really forged the Zulu nation. Group head Joseph Shabalala is still the frontman, and the hushed choral responses to his singing have a kid of awed magic about them. But even at low volume, there’s no doubting the passion that pervades it all. The big problem is that the whole album is hushed — there’s no real variety in the arrangements from track to track, and little variation in tempo, which can make it all seem a bit like one endless cut. No doubting the quality, but to really make a lasting impact, it needs something more, like the experimentation they’ve undertaken in the last few years. It all ends up feeling like a holding action, which is fine, and every group needs them occasionally, but it’s not an outstanding work in their canon musically, despite the subject matter and the reverence (quite possibly too reverent) with which they treat it.

666 (The Apocalypse of John, 13/18) is a double album by psychedelic/progressive art rock group Aphrodite’s Child. It was released in 1972, and was the primary vehicle/effort for the Vangelis project. It had a minor Album Oriented Radio hit in “The Four Horsemen”, and the song “Break” was also released. The album was ostensibly an adaptation of Biblical passages from the book of the same name, but was also very experimental in lyrics and composition.

An amazingly bombastic concept album about the Apocalypse of St. John seen as a rock spectacle. Demis Roussos wails the lyrics in a frantically operatic falsetto, while the band pound fiercely through Vangelis’ furiously complex music. It certainly has its moments, but the entire set eventually becomes too overwhelming to sit through.

True Audiophile: Best of Groove Note is basically a fancy name for the Super Audio CD label sampler. Groove Note Records began releasing jazz and blues recordings in 2005. They’ve also expanded their vision and have begun to re-release rare tracks by vintage artists and look to genre-bending vocalists in order to showcase excellent music coming from the jazz and blues traditions.

This album was the group’s magnum opus in the perception of many onlookers and fans, and it still plays well, though its flaws are more evident than they were at the time. The “Song of Scheherazade,” really a suite for the group supported by the London Symphony Orchestra and a chorus, started with guitarist-composer Michael Dunford, who had a personal fascination with the medieval literary work Tales of 1,001 Arabian Nights, and was realized by Dunford and his composing partner Betty Thatcher, with bassist Jon Camp and pianist John Tout. The piece, really nine sections assembled together, was one of the more ambitious works to come out of the progressive rock boom — it fits together nicely and does have some gorgeous passages and many lyrical, powerful sections, although it also seems slightly repetitive, overstaying its welcome somewhat; additionally, it never uses the orchestra quite as effectively as one senses it might have, for anything except embellishment. Less ambitious and more completely successful are “Ocean Gypsy,” “The Vultures Fly High,” and “Trip to the Fair” on side one, all relatively unpretentious pieces which feature extraordinary singing by Annie Haslam.

Grover Washington, Jr.’s fatal 1999 heart attack cut a successful 30-year recording career tragically short. Washington’s legacy was his ability to combine jazz and pop by tracing their common roots in R&B and soul music. He found fans among the younger wave of jazz listeners, who were attracted to the sounds of what became known as “smooth jazz.”

Washington’s jazzier side is highlighted on this retrospective, in addition to his smooth jazz inclinations. Standout tracks include a big band version of “Please Send Me Someone to Love,” as well as a version of Ron Carter’s “Blues for DP,” where he proves he’s an effective and skilled jazz saxophonist; his soprano solo is wonderfully constructed. A thought-provoking and varied set of music, PRIME CUTS is a good introduction to Washington’s music, as well as an endearing farewell to the father of what could be termed “rhythm & jazz”.

The Life is the third studio album from American R&B singer Ginuwine, released on Epic Records in 2001. The album debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 152,000 copies sold in the U.S. and was certified Platinum by the RIAA.

On his third album, Ginuwine is even more of a practiced R&B loverman than he was on his first two releases. Big Dog Productions, Inc. and the team of Troy Oliver and Cory Rooney produce the bulk of the beats here, which, as usual, mostly range from slow to very slow tempos with such trendy touches as acoustic guitar passages. But all that just serves as a bed for Ginuwine’s elastic tenor and his message to the women in his audience. The singer sounds like he’s been reading women’s magazines and tried to construct a persona that’s as appealing as possible. “Baby,” he croons in “Why Did You Go,” “I’m sorry for whatever I’ve done and I want you to be my wife.” In “Differences,” he talks about how much he has improved since meeting the woman he’s addressing, concluding, “I’m so responsible.” Even when he’s criticizing a woman, as he does in the album’s first single, “There It Is,” it’s because she’s not contributing to the relationship, while he’s holding down a steady job and paying the bills. It’s only in the album’s eighth cut, “How Deep Is Your Love” (an original, not the Bee Gees song), that he begins to apply pressure for sex, ungallantly suggesting that if the woman doesn’t come across he’ll start cheating on her. “Show After the Show” is a come-on to a post-concert groupie, which seems to negate what’s gone before, and “Role Play” moves on to kinky sex, but in the album-closing “Just Because,” Ginuwine acknowledges the temptations of his occupation and pleads, “I’m trying to learn to be committed.” It’s hard to believe that anyone who’s swallowed his line before is going to become skeptical now, so The Life looks like another winner for him.

Leo Kottke’s wide-release debut came about after he sent a cassette to John Fahey’s Takoma label. Not surprisingly, it recalls Fahey’s work in a number of respects: the synthesis of numerous influences from blues, pop, classical, and folk styles, the weirdly titled instrumentals, even the tongue-in-cheek liner notes. Kottke’s brand of virtuosity, however, is more soothing and easy on the ear than Fahey’s. It’s far from sappy, though, the rich and resonant picking intimating some underlying restlessness, like peaceful open fields after a storm. Establishing much of the territory Kottke was to explore throughout his career, this release was also one of his most popular, eventually selling over 500,000 copies.

The No Angels originated in 2000 on the international television talent show Popstars and was one of the first television-cast acts to enjoy attention throughout Central Europe in the early 2000s. VH1 Divas Live brings VH1’s original 1998 gathering of superstar songbirds to SACD. Gloria Estefan, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, and Shania Twain perform some of their biggest hits, including Carey’s “My All,” Twain’s “You’re Still the One,” Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” and Estefan’s “Turn the Beat Around.” All five divas share the spotlight — to the extent that a diva can share the spotlight — on the set’s finale, “Natural Woman” and “Testimony.” A worthwhile set for those who want to see as well as hear their VH1 Divas Live album, the disc offers little in the way of additional features but remains a faithful translation of the special TV concert.

If The Hurting was mental anguish, Songs from the Big Chair marks the progression towards emotional healing, a particularly bold sort of catharsis culled from Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith’s shared attraction to primal scream therapy. The album also heralded a dramatic maturation in the band’s music, away from the synth-pop brand with which it was (unjustly) seared following the debut, and towards a complex, enveloping pop sophistication. The songwriting of Orzabal, Smith, and keyboardist Ian Stanley took a huge leap forward, drawing on reserves of palpable emotion and lovely, protracted melodies that draw just as much on soul and R&B music as they do on immediate pop hooks. The album could almost be called pseudo-conceptual, as each song holds its place and each is integral to the overall tapestry, a single-minded resolve that is easy to overlook when an album is as commercially successful as Songs from the Big Chair. And commercially successful it was, containing no less than three huge commercial radio hits, including the dramatic and insistent march, “Shout” and the shimmering, cascading “Head Over Heels,” which, tellingly, is actually part of a song suite on the album. Orzabal and Smith’s penchant for theorizing with steely-eyed austerity was mistaken for harsh bombasticism in some quarters, but separated from its era, the album only seems earnestly passionate and immediate, and each song has the same driven intent and the same glistening remoteness. It is not only a commercial triumph, it is an artistic tour de force. And in the loping, percolating “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” Tears for Fears perfectly captured the zeitgeist of the mid-’80s while impossibly managing to also create a dreamy, timeless pop classic. Songs from the Big Chair is one of the finest statements of the decade.
