Oscar-winning composer Jerry Goldsmith has written scores and themes for well over 250 films and TV shows. His work has been thrilling fans for nearly fifty years. Widely acknowledged by his colleagues as a master of his art, Goldsmith has received (in addition to the Oscar for his score to The Omen in 1976) five Emmy Awards, nine Golden Globe nominations, and seventeen additional Academy Award nominations.

Academy Award winning composer Jerry Goldsmith is in peak form with this 2001 Telarc release. The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith, with Goldsmith conducting the London Symphony Orchestra runs the gamut of his 250 scores for film and television. This recording features works that span over almost five decades. The highlights of this recording are the two separate medleys, one from Goldsmith’s motion picture work and one of from his television work; the “Motion Picture Medley”, which is blended craftily together as a sort of trip through the forty years of film music. The “Medley for Television Themes” is equally diverse as it features works from his television program work. The high point of this recording is Goldsmith’s breathy reading of his “Theme from Rudy, with the London Symphony Orchestra performing it excellently. The “Theme from Rudy is superbly done and comes off sounding more like a work of John Barry or one of Ralph Vaughn-Williams works for string orchestra, with it’s plush strings and atmospheric consonance. This disc was expertly recorded using the Direct Digital Stream or DSD technology, whereby the music never leaves the digital domain adding quality and clarity to the over-all performance and the dynamic of the performance. Goldsmith, with the help of the finely tuned London Symphony Orchestra has created a resume of career highlights, and a recording that is spontaneously alive without being sentimental or overly self-indulgent. The Film Music of Jerry Goldsmith is a finely tuned recording, but many of these pieces are much more enjoyable in their respective films and television programs. Film music serves a bit of utilitarian purpose, guiding the plot and the script through, with this in mind the “Theme from Rudy” is really the only stand-alone masterpiece on this disc, but the other works are excellent.

When director Richard Donner faced dramatic recuts in a bid to salvage his troubled science fiction epic Timeline, he abandoned composer Jerry Goldsmith’s completed score, citing his wish for a more intense and action-packed soundtrack. The film nevertheless bombed, and upon listening to Varèse Sarabande’s belated 2004 release of Goldsmith’s music, one can only wonder what Donner was smoking (not to mention where one might procure some of the stuff for personal use). One of the last scores written by Goldsmith in the months leading to his untimely death, Timeline certainly does not lack for adventure or bombast. An anything-goes effort employing heavy orchestration, myriad electronic effects, and dense percussion, it contains few if any new ideas but affirms the composer’s consummate mastery of the action genre. Kudos to Varèse for making it available.

Jerry Goldsmith’s remarkable 78/79 season saw the composer tackle a series of major movies with diverse subject matters and complement each of them with equally diverse and impressive scores. Amongst the thrillers, sci-fi, horror and drama came a hugely enjoyable period caper; The Great Train Robbery. A lighted hearted romp through Victorian England, directed by Michael Crichton, based on his book. Varése Sarabande have produced a welcome re-issue of this delightful Jerry Goldsmith score, presenting it as a multi channel SACD, though often lacking the dynamics and vibrancy of the Memoir CD, and elevated it to deluxe edition status by including extra music too, though sadly this is not the complete score. Apart from minor omissions, the key missing cue is of course Dead Willy, the music that accompanies Clean Willy as he is chased and then killed for betraying Pierce to the Police, oddly absent from the 24 track masters used here.

The score for any Star Trek film relies heavily upon the introduction of the classic eight-note motif that has shadowed the pop culture phenomenon since its arrival on the big screen in 1979. For Star Trek: Nemesis, the series’ tenth installment, Jerry Goldsmith delivers the theme with all of the pomp one could hope for on the rousing “Remus.” What follows is a fairly typical yet immensely enjoyable sci-fi soundtrack, filled with pounding dissonance, wonder, and the occasional moment of tender camaraderie — the quietly powerful “Ideals” — that one would expect from this legendary saga and composer.

John Williams, classical guitar virtuoso, is known for his wide-ranging approach to repertory, which includes appearances playing electric rock guitar and international music…

With his crystalline articulation and extraordinary rhythmic prowess, John Williams ranks among the greatest solo voices the acoustic guitar has ever known. Now, with the joyous evocations of the African guitar tradition, Williams has hit upon his most emotionally satisfying crossover recital to date. Though both chief soloist and arranger, Williams nevertheless avoids shining the spotlight on his virtuosic skills–even his solo showcase, “Masagna,” places greater emphasis on the tune’s folkish incantations. He allows plenty of melodic space for the likes of steel-string player John Ethridge, while guiding listeners through the idiomatic flora and fauna of the pan-African experience: from the hornpipelike airs of Madagascar (“Mitopa”) and kora-styled arpeggios of Mali (“Malinke Guitars”) through to intimations of South African vocal traditions with a lovely children’s chorus on the anthem of the African National Congress, “Nikosi Sikelel’I Africa.” Simply expressive and deeply felt, Magic Box exudes a universal vibe that transcends borders and nationalities.

It seems hard to believe now, but at the beginning of 2003, it appeared that underdog Kelly Rowland might usurp her fellow Destiny’s Child member Beyoncé in the solo career stakes, having scored a U.S. chart-topper and a U.K. number one album shortly after her bandmate’s Austin Powers-related “Work It Out” failed to even make it into the Billboard Hot 100. Of course, time has shown that this surprising role reversal only ever lasted a mere six months, but while “Crazy in Love” might have blown any comparisons out of the water, its parent album didn’t exactly produce the whitewash expected. Indeed, take away the Chi-Lites sampling booty-shaker and there isn’t much difference in quality between Dangerously in Love and Rowland’s first offering, Simply Deep. Like the former’s early uptempo nature, the latter’s 14 tracks start promisingly with the rock-tinged “Stole,” an emotive tale of school shootings and suicides, the Patti LaBelle-sampling Nelly duet “Dilemma,” and the clattering percussion of “Can’t Nobody.” But other than the Timbaland-esque staccato R&B of the Brandy-penned “Love/Hate,” and the sleek disco-funk of “Past 12,” the album soon becomes bogged down with the kind of gloopy, forgettable ballads that also dominated Beyoncé’s debut. The likes of finger-clicking slow jam “Haven’t Told You,” twinkling nu-soul number “Heaven,” and the Solange-featuring title track are all slickly produced, allowing Rowland’s soulful and seductive vocals to come to the forefront for a change, but they’re so utterly generic that they could have been lifted from several of her fellow young urban divas’ output, with only the gorgeous “Train on a Track,” an acoustic-driven lament to the first flourishes of love, and the chugging guitars and mournful strings of “Beyond Imagination,” deviating from the late-night slow jam pastiche formula. Having been recorded over just three weeks in order to capitalize on the success of “Dilemma,” Simply Deep does sometimes have the feel of a “will this do?” rush job, but skip past the schmaltzy filler and there are several flashes of inspiration which are more than worthy of sitting alongside the highlights of Beyoncé’s back catalog.

Jennifer Warnes became a household name in the ’70s with her hit “Right Time of the Night” and scored equally big with the Righteous Brothers’ Bill Medley on “The Time of My Life” from the film Dirty Dancing. She also wowed critics and fans alike with Famous Blue Raincoat, her album of Leonard Cohen songs. In all, she’s sold over 35 million records worldwide, but she’s hardly a household word in the post-Madonna world. Warnes has returned to the recording scene for the first time since 1992 with The Well, a collection ten songs co-produced with Martin Davich. And what a collection it is. As a singer and a songwriter, Warnes knows her strengths well. She understates lyrics and musical phrases as a way of getting them to open up on their own through her gorgeously wrought singing. She’s no acrobat; she doesn’t reach for the note that breaks the pitch-meter. Instead, she allows her voice to come up from the heart of the lyric she’s singing. She wears the song and allows the song to adorn her as well, whether plaintively, as on the title track, one of her co-writes with Texas legend Doyle Bramhall, or her lilting, haunting, spiritual tome “Prairie Melancholy.” When doing takes on the songs of others, such as Tom Waits’ nugget “Invitation to the Blues,” she imbues them with the soft, bluesy swing inherent in the original, but adds depth and dimension with her dry, reportorial storytelling (with fine guitar work from Doyle Bramhall). The songs on The Well seem spare and open, layered lightly, and full of room for Warnes’ warm voice to reveal the wealth of emotions in the tunes themselves. But what’s interesting is without it being noticeable to the listener, there are small but lush string sections, a few horns here and there, and a full-on four-piece rock band. Her reading of Billy Joel’s “So It Goes” is virtually a reinvention of the song. She offers this song from a heart that has been cracked enough times, to paraphrase her friend Cohen, that it has been flooded with light. But it’s the songs with Bramhall that are the masterpieces here; they reveal the subtle, bluesy textures of Texas and the strength in expressing one’s vulnerability to forces one does not understand, such as on “The Panther.” As if to underline the evidence, there is a vocal duet between them on Eddy Arnold’s country swing gem “You Don’t Know Me” that rivals Ray Charles’ version for pure, expressive passion. With her stunning rendition of Arlo Guthrie’s “Patriot’s Dream,” she is backed by a folk music symphony orchestra, with Guthrie himself lending a guest vocal as well as Blondie Chaplin and Kenny Edwards, with a Carmen accordion appearance by Van Dyke Parks. The set ends with a piano trio reprise of the title track that wraps all the magic up into a circle, as if these songs were a cycle of mystery, sensuality, and imagination from the very beginning. And, of course they were; Warnes isn’t capable of anything less. Welcome back, Jennifer Warnes; you’ve been missed.

“Rainbow People” means more than just an LP. It’s Eric Bibb’s debut album, gathering of friends and musical ideas that go together and express one thing above all; the joy of knowing each other. Hearing the sounds of jazz, blues, African, Latin-American and classical music on the same album is a naturally good thing – a kind of rainbow.

Eric Bibb grew up in New York City, surrounded by a plethora of cultural variety from Leadbelly to Villa-Lobos wafting in from the radio and the streets. By the time little Bibb got his first guitar, his father, the eminent Leon Bibb, was making the rounds as a respected folk singer. Leon removed Eric from school in favor of packing him along to rehearsals, where he consorted with the likes of Judy Collins, Odetta, Bob Dylan, Earl Robinson and many others.

Eric Bibb’s Good Stuff, is a clever fusion of contemporary folk and classic country-blues and classic gospel that emphasizes the guitarist’s skill at fusing genres, as well as his flair for writing solid bluesy songs. Eric Bibb and Needed Time’s Spirit & The Blues is a real odyssey of Eric’s music. Here we find everything from Mississippi blues to spirituals, ballads, country and even reggae – sometimes with an almost electrified swing, but guaranteed unplugged in the finest Opus 3 tradition.

Spirit and the Blues is a funky folk-blues delight: a bubbling pot of authentic bottleneck spirituals and memorable hum-alongs, especially for hardcore Deacons fans. Bibb blends the muddy-river vocal style of Delta gospel and the drive of white vagabond balladeers like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. Choice cuts “Lonesome Valley” and “Satisfied Mind” are gorgeous understated revisits of neglected gems; “Where I Shall Be” is a meditative adaption of an old field prayer recorded by Blind Lemon Jefferson. Bibb’s fingerpicking technique engages the “micro-melodies” happening between melody and bassline, skillfully accompanied by the harmonica-wielding Rev. Dan Smith on “Keep Goin’ On” and the traded leads with Göran Wennerbrandt’s steel-bodied National Style “O” on “Lonesome Valley.” Bibb’s songs successfully trade visits with gospel as well as sassy, lazy blues tunes about sex and old-fashioned romance, as in “Braggin,” also a favorite cut. A modern and beautifully mixed record, graced with spirit and a real timelessness factor.

As its title implies, this is a spiritually based collaboration from three distinct — even disparate — yet surprisingly harmonious voices. Mostly, but not entirely acoustic, the trio of rootsy singers trade lead vocals on smooth jazz/blues (“Bessie’s Dream”), folk-blues (“Good Stuff”), Delta blues (“Rolling Log”), gospel (an a cappella version of Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “Rock Daniel”), and combinations of those genres. On paper it sounds scattershot, but in actuality this is a thoughtfully paced combination of styles, united by three affecting voices. Eric Bibb’s smoother Keb’ Mo’ approach meshes surprisingly well with Rory Block’s more penetrating Delta croon and Maria Muldaur’s sassy, sexy, throaty growl. Covers of Jimmy Reed’s “Little Rain” and Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody” with Bibb taking lead, and Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me” (Muldaur and Block) show the disc’s wide stylistic range. A musical seminar in how diverse types of music interbreed and influence each other, all three singers are in the moment with nobody commanding the spotlight for long. The barrelhouse honky tonk piano blues of Block’s “Travelin’ Woman Blues” incorporates both Muldaur’s and Block’s singing in the album’s most convincing duet. Only a few songs such as the closing title track feature all three voices, and the album might have benefited from more instances where they all contribute. But the vocalist’s exuberance soars from the grooves and creates a lively yet relaxed vibe that’s contagious and often thrilling. The result is a cohesive, soulful, and powerful disc that will hopefully inspire listeners to find more material from each of its headliners.

Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow compiles Loggins’ biggest solo hits, including the chart-topping “Footloose” theme, “Danger Zone” (from Top Gun), and “I’m Alright” (from the classic Caddyshack), along with the newly recorded single “For the First Time”.

The term “middle of the road” was virtually invented for Kenny Loggins, whose brand of plain and pleasant pop/rock has always managed to find a place on the charts. This 15-song set has most of the hits you’ll need, including the soundtrack singles (“I’m Alright,” “Danger Zone,” “Footloose”) and the duets with Stevie Nicks and Steve Perry. One thing is for sure: the man certainly knows a good hook when he hears it.

This debut album was credited to Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina because the project had begun as a solo record by Loggins being produced by Messina. By the time it was finished, however, Messina had written or co-written six of the 11 songs, contributed “first guitar,” and shared lead vocals on many tracks. Messina’s “Nobody but You” and “Vahevala,” co-written by Loggins’ second cousin, Dave Loggins, were the singles chart entries, but today everybody remembers the album for Loggins’ “House at Pooh Corner,” which had earned Loggins his record contract, and “Danny’s Song,” which Anne Murray took into the Top Ten the following year. The only thing wrong with this record is that it was too perfect – with their infectious blend of country, folk, rock and Caribbean music, L&M started out at the top of their game, and although they were able to match some of the material and performances on later records, the team never got any better than this.

With Breakfast in America, Supertramp had a genuine blockbuster hit, topping the charts for four weeks in the U.S. and selling millions of copies worldwide; by the 1990s, the album had sold over 18 million units across the world. Although their previous records had some popular success, they never even hinted at the massive sales of Breakfast in America. Then again, Supertramp’s earlier records weren’t as pop-oriented as Breakfast. The majority of the album consisted of tightly written, catchy, well-constructed pop songs, like the hits “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home,” and “Goodbye Stranger.” Supertramp still had a tendency to indulge themselves occasionally, but Breakfast in America had very few weak moments. It was clearly their high-water mark.

Ludwig van Beethoven – Ronald Brautigam – Eroica, Variations (1796-1802)

Genre: Classical | Style: Classical Period, Piano

The chief reason to buy this disc is for Brautigam’s dazzling performance of the Eroica Variations.

Infrequently played and recorded merely because it’s not one of the numbered 32 sonatas, the Eroica Variations is a clever, virtuoso work from the beginning of Beethoven’s second period. It exhibits the same kind of nervous energy as the 2nd Symphony, which this performance embodies.

Unlike many theme-and-variation pieces which can be a bit pedantic, instead of just stating the theme and going through a few contained variations, Beethoven opens the piece with the bass line to the main theme, puts it through three variations, then states the whole theme, puts it through 15 variations, and finally closes the work with a finale that includes a fugue.

Brautigam’s playing is brash, highlighting the dynamic contrasts of the music. He effectively pounds out the three dotted 8th note section of the theme that are peppered throughout the work. As I said before, the spirit of the 2nd Symphony (completed the same year as the Eroica Variations) permeates this performance.

As for the sound of the fortepiano, it works quite well. In the second variation, for example, its wiry sound is a natural fit with all the 16th notes.

The other variations on the disc date from Beethoven’s first period. While Brautigam and BIS deserve much praise for recording all of Beethoven’s solo keyboard music (has anyone else ever done this?), compared to the Eroica Variations, they are a bit inconsequential.

Like the previous releases in this series, BIS’s sound is excellent. All I can say are the usually adjectives of praise.

Since I received this disc a month and a half ago I’ve probably listened to the Eroica Variations nearly 20 times — like the previous releases, it’s Beethoven played to perfection. SA-CD.net

BBC Music Mag., Nov 2009:
“… a fine recital, & the most impressive instalment so far in Brautigam’s Beethoven cycle. The warm-sounding reproduction Graf piano from around 1819 has been very well recorded.”

Ronald Brautigam, one of Holland’s leading musicians, is remarkable not only for his virtuosity & musicality but also for the eclectic nature of his musical interests. In 1995 he began what has proved a highly successful association with the Swedish label BIS. Among the more than 30 titles released so far are Mendelssohn’s Piano Concertos & the complete piano works of Mozart & Haydn on the fortepiano. The year 2004 saw the release of the first of a 17-CD Beethoven cycle, also on the fortepiano.

SA-CD.net review by Beethovenfan September 28, 2009:

Listening to the sonata op 81a, the 1st thing that hit me was the palette of colours Brautigam gets out of the instrument. One moment he gently caresses some limits of the instrument, a few bars futher, the whole instrument sings as if there are no limits. The main profits of this reading are the astonishing pianoforte, the colours Brautigam adds to this composition, & the SACD sound quality, the reading itself resides amongst the existing top versions.

The same goes for the sonata op 90 & so far everything is as we could expect after the 6 previous discs & I was wondering what he would do with the sonata op 106.

The Hammerklaviersonate is one of those works that has been analysed, described, explained in so many essays, lots of books, one of those Beethoven works for which one can find almost 100 recordings. It is unarguably considered as one of Beethoven’s absolute masterpieces. And yet I never liked it… I heard Badura-Skoda, Serkin, Binns, Willis, but no one could convince me, no one could affect me & as I am a Beethoven fan this was always my missing link in my Beethoven cult.

Until I heard Brautigam on this SACD. This is for me his greatest achievement over the 7 Beethoven discs. A breathtaking feeling for everything on the right place. His tempo, speed, accents, volume, absolutely everything is combined to 1 unique reading. Yes, this is a Beethoven sonata! I experienced how Beethoven’s genius, Brautigams insight & virtuosity & the sound of the instrument blended to one grasping, divine moment of beautiful music. Then for artist & listener a demanding fugue is heavenly presented, the complex structure comes out crystal clear.

Add the marvelous sound of the SACD medium & one can consider this SACD as a new reference in recording history. I hope we don’t have to wait another year for the Last Sonatas…

Compared to the gargantuan Live/1975-85, 2001′s Live in New York City seems like the very definition of restraint, but consider this — not only does it span two discs, it leaves out a considerable portion of the set list from the show and thereby the set list of Springsteen’s celebrated 2000 reunion with the E Street Band. Some critics complained that this record was little more than a tie-in to the HBO special of the same name, but even if that’s true, the record would have merit since it illustrates exactly why this group should never have parted ways. In a sense, even if this is the third live album in Springsteen’s catalog, it’s the first that attempts to replicate the feeling of an evening out with the E Street Band (the Live/1975-85 box tried too hard to be an ultimate experience; MTV Plugged captured a transitional phase). Though most reunions feel a little forced, this feels natural, yet never nostalgic, since the track listing never relies on the predictable. There are no hits in the conventional sense — outside of “Born in the U.S.A.” tucked away on the second disc and an initially uncredited “Born to Run” — but there are many fan favorites interspersed with a few obscurities and new songs, most notoriously the protest song “American Skin (41 Shots).” This works in Springsteen’s favor, since there’s no pandering — only the joy of making music with the band that understands him best. This doesn’t really result in something essential, even if the new songs are quite good, but if you’ve ever been a fan, it’s hard not to warm to Live in New York City.

Andrea Bocelli, LSO, Lorin Maazel – Sentimento (2002)

Though Andrea Bocelli kicks off SENTIMENTO with a 20th Century piece, the stately setting of Rodrigo’s “En Aranjuez con tu amor,” the balance of the album wisely focuses on one of the renowned vocalist’s greatest strengths, the Romantic period, as Rodrigo quickly gives way to the more sprightly feel of Leoncavallo’s “Mattinata.” After moving arrestingly through similar fare, Bocelli bookends things nicely by closing with a pair of canzonas from Tosti; the passionate, poignant “‘A vucchella” and the quietly elegant “Vorrei morire,” followed immediately by Donaudy’s “Vaghissima sembianza,” which ends things on a fulsome, appropriately romantic (with a small “r”) note. Throughout SENTIMENTO, the sympathetic accompaniment of the London Symphony Orchestra, masterfully conducted by Lorin Maazel, provides the perfect instrumental setting for Bocelli’s evocative voice.
