Sonny Rollins – Way Out West (1957) [Analogue Productions’ Remaster 2002]
PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 70:37 minutes | Artwork | 3,24 GB
or FLAC(converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Artwork | 1,33 GB

This was the first trio album that Sonny Rollins recorded in the late 50s, and it remains among the most important documents of his career. Astounding melodic continuity paired with stream-of-consciousness invention, passion, and maturity on the ballads “Solitude” and “There Is No Greater Love,” a brilliantly quirky title track, inspired support from Ray Brown and Shelly Manne, and a supreme wit that carried over to perhaps the greatest cover photo of all time combine to make Way Out West one of the most inspired and best loved albums in jazz history.

The timeless Way out West established Sonny Rollins as jazz’s top tenor saxophonist (at least until John Coltrane surpassed him the following year). Joined by bassist Ray Brown and drummer Shelly Manne, Rollins is heard at one of his peaks on such pieces as “I’m an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande),” his own “Way out West,” “There Is No Greater Love,” and “Come, Gone” (a fast stomp based on “After You’ve Gone”). The William Claxton photo of Rollins wearing Western gear (and holding his tenor) in the desert is also a classic. [The Contemporary re-release appends three bonus tracks, all of them alternate takes].

Tracklist:
01. I’m An Old Cowhand
02. Solitude
03. Come, Gone

About the Mastering:
This music was recorded using only vacuum-tube components. As this is the primary reason the sound is so lush and natural, Doug Sax mastered this recording from the original analog tapes using the Mastering Lab’s proprietary all-tube electronics until the final digital conversion. Sax used the latest third-generation Analog-to-DSD converters by Ed Meitner/EMM Labs to transfer the music to the SACD layer.

In 1956 Sonny Rollins used the Clifford Brown-Max Roach Quintet (of which he was a member) as his sidemen for this Prestige set. The high points of this particularly strong hard bop set include “Valse Hot” (an early jazz waltz), a rapid rendition of “I Feel a Song Coming On,” and Rollins’s classic “Pent-Up House.” Trumpeter Brown (heard on one of his final sessions) is in excellent form, as is the strong rhythm section and the young tenor-leader himself.

02. Kiss And Run

04. Count Your Blessings Instead Of Sheep
05. Pent-Up House

In 1965 and 1966 tenor giant Sonny Rollins issued three albums for the Impulse label. They would be his last until 1972 when he re-emerged on the scene from a self-imposed retirement. This date is significant for the manner in which Rollins attacks five standards with a quartet that included pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Mickey Roker. Rollins, who’s been recording for RCA and its Bluebird subsidiary, had spent the previous three years (after emerging from his first retirement) concentrating on standards and focusing deeply on intimate, intricate aspects of melody and harmony. He inverts the approach here, and digs deeply into pulse and rhythm and leaving melody to take care of itself. This is not a “new thing” date but instead focuses on playing according to the dictates of the rhythm section and on interchanging with Booker and Roker, leaving much of the melodic aspect of these tunes to Bryant. Rollins could never quite leave the melody out of anything he played because of his intense gift as a lyrical improviser; he nonetheless stripped his approach back and played tunes like “On Green Dolphin Street” by improvising according to theme rather than strict melody, where his interplay with the rhythm section becomes based on the dynamic and shifting times played by Roker. While things are more intimate and straight on “Everything Happens to Me,” he nonetheless plays the edges, filling the space like a drummer. Melody happens throughout, the tune is recognizable, but it is stretched in his solo to a theme set by the shimmering cymbals and brushed snare work of Roker. The oddest cuts in the set are the last two; spaced out readings of “Blue Room,” and “Three Little Words”; they sound as if he were preparing the listener for a true change in his approach. Melody gets inverted, with spaces and syncopation taking the place of notes. The swing is inherent in everything here, but it’s clear that the saxophonist was hearing something else in his head, the way he squeezes notes tightly into some phrases where they might be placed elsewhere, and substitutes small, lithe lines inside Bryant’s solos which dictate the harmonic intervals more conventionally with his singing approach. And speaking of rhythm, the album’s hinge piece is the burning calypso “Hold “Em Joe.” Here again, as Bryant’s changes play it straight, Rollins shoves his horn inside them and draws out the beat on his horn over and over again. As strange and beautiful as this record sounds, it would have been wonderful if he had chosen to explore this track on his later records, but that restless spirit was already moving onto something else, as evidenced by his next offering, which were his original compositions for the film Alfie with arrangements by Oliver Nelson. If anything, Sonny Rollins on Impulse! feels as if it were a recording Rollins had to get out of his system. But thank goodness for us because it’s a winner through and through.

In 1900 the Stuttgart Hymnus Boys’ choir (German: Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben) was initiated by the Swabian entrepreneur Paul von Lechler.

His models were the Thomanerchor Leipzig and the Dresdner Kreuzchor. After the re-foundation in 1946 and under the leadership of Professor Gerhard Wilhelm, who conducted the choir until 1987, the Hymnus Boys’ Choir soon reached an artistic level, that was recognized far beyond the country borders. Then Eckhard Weyand was in charge until 1992. From 1992 until 2010 the choir was led and conducted by church music director Hanns-Friedrich Kunz, who retired in March 2010. Since then the choir has been led by Rainer Johannes Homburg. Even though churches and concert halls in Baden-Württemberg are the centre of their public appearances, the choir was on successful concert tours through Germany and Europe.

The Stuttgart Hymnus Boys’ Choir has a broad repertoire of spiritual vocal music, especially music by Johann Sebastian Bach and other baroque composers. Parallel to the concerts the musical-liturgical arrangements of masses have a special meaning.

About 170 boys and 30 young men come together to rehearse in Stuttgart weekly, because the choir does not have a boarding school. The singers live with their parents and go to school in their hometowns.

The boys start to learn reading easy notes and dealing with musical basics at an age of seven or eight years. Later, usually after three years, the boys are introduced to the literature of the concert choir and start to fully participate in concerts. After the voice has changed, the boys can sing in the men’s choir as tenors or basses. Skilled voice artists and teachers support both boys and men in single voice lessons. wikipedia

This brand new recording of Franz Liszt’s massive oratorio, ‘Christus’ is doubly welcome as it is a new version for some years now and it enshrines some great singing and orchestral players all under the knowing guidance of Roman Kofman.
The oratorio is split into three distinct parts or acts lasting about an hour each with the first one designated as a Christmas Oratorio. The orchestra plays a hugely important part here with an extensive introduction lasting almost a quarter of an hour after the soloists and choir get a look in. I had been familiar with Erato’s excellent recording under James Conlon but that is currently unavailable and dates back to 1982, almost a quarter of a century and I must say that I hugely enjoyed Kofman’s brisk and unalloyed style.
In the second part described as ‘Epiphany’, we have some lovely interpretations, especially the magnificent ‘Entry into Jerusalem’ which is fairly apocalyptic in its intensity. What is most characteristic about this oratorio is the way it is built into huge blocks that are quite symphonic in their treatment. The third part is called ‘Passion and Transfiguration’ and almost resembles Mahler in its glorious intensity especially in the final ‘Et Resurexit’
I already indicated the excellent qualities of the soloists especially Franziska Hirzel and Birgit Remmert who sing with that important ethereal intensity. Kofman conducts with the ideal tonic and lets the music move along quite magically. The SACD sound comes out trumps on my Sony SACD-11 player and I really have nothing but an unqualified recommendation for this beautiful set.

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is a successful multi-guitar ensemble regularly performing, known for its variety of repertory. They are known for using nylon string guitars to imitate a variety of instruments and effects. They have played in many styles; Baroque, Bluegrass, Flamenco, Rock, and New Age are among their repertoire. For this album, the quartet received a Grammy Award in 2005 as “Best Classical Crossover CD”.

A great concept and a grand conceit, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s disc entitled Guitar Heroes is a disc of radically rearranged and reimagined adaptations, transcriptions, and extrapolations of the quartets’ players own favorite guitar players. The arrangements are tremendous, the transcriptions are terrific, and the extrapolations are amazing. Who would have thought that Jimi Hendrix’s manner of playing could sound so refined, or that Steve Howe’s Mood for a Day could sound so exquisite, or that Chet Atkins’ echo effects could sound so ethereal? And who would have thought that the music of Frank Zappa and Django Reinhardt could be so superbly recomposed and yet so true to the soul of the music? But the astonishing virtuosity of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s playing makes believers of everyone and the astounding reality of the sound of Telarc’s recording makes everyone believe that they are sitting in the same room.

In the very early days of Fanfare, one critic dismissed Heifetz as a relic, soon to be ignored. Of course that’s turned out to be utterly false; the Heifetz blend of fire and ice has been tremendously influential since then, and the somewhat more romantic elements of his playing are coming back into vogue (not that, in his maturity, Heifetz was given to romantic extremes). Just think about Itzhak Perlman, whose entire career has been an effort to play like Heifetz (to the extent of appropriating the more oddball elements of his repertoire) while being loved like Kreisler. Heifetz retired 35 years ago, but his style is still very much with us. So are his recordings.

Little need be said about these justly famous performances from 1955 and 1957. The Brahms has great drive—Heifetz and Reiner get through it in 35 minutes—but this never comes at the expense of Heifetz’s singing tone. Heifetz provides his own cadenza, which is suitably virtuosic but not alien to the Brahms style. From soloist and orchestra alike, this is a note-perfect performance in a vivid recording, about which more later. The Tchaikovsky offers more of the same, although in this case the brevity (just under 30 minutes) has more to do with a small cut than with speed. The performance is extroverted yet elegant, truly debonair, benefiting from the soloist’s rich tone and sustained phrasing and Reiner’s incisive partnership.
This is one of the RCA Living Stereo 24bit Remaster, two-track in the case of the Brahms and three in the Tchaikovsky. In the Brahms, the orchestra is string-dominant, with winds and brass comparatively submerged most of the time, although Heifetz seems naturally positioned, closer to the orchestra than to the listener. The orchestra is better balanced in the Tchaikovsky. All in all, this is the best sonic presentation of these recordings yet. –James Reel, FANFARE

Another of Chet Atkins’ attempts to break into the jazz world during his Columbia period, this recording veers well across the line into new age wallowing of the most innocuous kind. At this point in time, when a record opened with soothing ocean waves, followed by a gentle wash of synths, you could pretty much expect the new age to be lapping at your feet throughout. As he has with so many other genres, Atkins displays an instinctive grasp of this feel-good idiom, though he has to hold back his powers of invention to conform to its clichés and repetitions. Yet even amidst the twittering sound effects and electronic drums of “Up in My Treehouse” and the listless treatment of Keith Jarrett’s “My Song,” Atkins’ guitar always exudes dignity. Encouragingly, several of the tunes that Atkins composed himself are the most interesting ones on the disc. “Laffin’ at Life” allows for some fingerpicking by the master and some OK doodling by other guitarists and keyboardists, and the smooth jazz “On a Roll” has other facets of the Atkins personality, with Earl Klugh apparently taking a guest solo. One of Atkins’ favorite latter-day collaborators, Mark Knopfler, is also on the record, to little discernable effect.

Barry Manilow’s second seasonal collection, following 1990’s Because It’s Christmas, was released on Columbia Records, but that label berth appears to be a one-off for the singer, who followed his long tenure at Arista by signing to the jazz independent Concord for his last album, 2001’s Here at the Mayflower. Maybe Columbia offered a bigger budget, since Manilow is awash in strings on a set of holiday standards. Those strings are arranged festively, and Manilow is in an appropriately festive mood, really throwing himself into the proceedings; it’s his enthusiasm that makes this Christmas album a winner. There are songs actually written as Christmas carols, such as “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” but Manilow also expands the usual repertoire to take in a number of tunes that have become associated with the holiday season over the years, even if they were not intended to be originally, notably Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music and Joni Mitchell’s melancholy “River” from her Blue album, which is certainly set at Christmas time even if it doesn’t share the usual holiday sentiments. Inevitably, Manilow ends with his own new Christmas original, “A Gift of Love,” which is a good song even if it isn’t likely to join the ranks of the perennial copyrights. This is an enjoyable Christmas album in a traditional pop style likely to please both Manilow fans and others.

Blow by Blow typifies Jeff Beck’s wonderfully unpredictable career. Released in 1975, Beck’s fifth effort as a leader and first instrumental album was a marked departure from its more rock-based predecessors. Only composer/keyboardist Max Middleton returned from Beck’s previous lineups. To Beck’s credit, Blow by Blow features a tremendous supporting cast. Middleton’s tasteful use of the Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and analog synthesizers leaves a soulful imprint. Drummer Richard Bailey is in equal measure supportive and propulsive as he deftly combines elements of jazz and funk with contemporary mixed meters. Much of the album’s success is also attributable to the excellent material, which includes Middleton’s two originals and two collaborations with Beck, a clever arrangement of Lennon and McCartney’s “She’s a Woman,” and two originals by Stevie Wonder. George Martin’s ingenious production and string arrangements rival his greatest work. Beck’s versatile soloing and diverse tones are clearly the album’s focus, and he proves to be an adept rhythm player. Blow by Blow is balanced by open-ended jamming and crisp ensemble interaction as it sidesteps the bombast that sank much of the jazz-rock fusion of the period. One of the album’s unique qualities is the sense of fun that permeates the performances. On the opening “You Know What I Mean,” Beck’s stinging, blues-based soloing is full of imaginative shapes and daring leaps. On “Air Blower,” elaborate layers of rhythm, duel lead, and solo guitars find their place in the mix. Propelled by the galvanic rhythm section, Beck slashes his way into “Scatterbrain,” where a dizzying keyboard and guitar line leads to more energetic soloing from Beck and Middleton. In Stevie Wonder’s ballad “Cause We’ve Ended as Lovers,” Beck variously coaxes and unleashes sighs and screams from his guitar in an aching dedication to Roy Buchanan. Middleton’s aptly titled “Freeway Jam” best exemplifies the album’s loose and fun-loving qualities, with Beck again riding high atop the rhythm section’s wave. As with “Scatterbrain,” Martin’s impeccable string arrangements enhance the subtle harmonic shades of the closing “Diamond Dust.” Blow by Blow signaled a new creative peak for Beck, and it proved to be a difficult act to follow. It is a testament to the power of effective collaboration and, given the circumstances, Beck clearly rose to the occasion. In addition to being a personal milestone, Blow by Blow ranks as one of the premiere recordings in the canon of instrumental rock music.

One of the great things about Jeff Beck is his utter unpredictability. It’s also one of the most maddening things about him, too, since it’s as likely to lead to flights of genius as it is to weird detours like Beck, Bogert & Appice. It’s hard to tell what exactly attracted Beck to the rhythm section of Vanilla Fudge and Cactus – perhaps he just wanted to rock really loud and really hard, beating Led Zeppelin at their own game. Whatever the motivation, the end result was the same – a leaden album, with occasional interesting guitar work smothered by heavy riffs and rhythms that don’t succeed on a visceral level. It’s a loud, lumbering record that may be of interest for Beck archivists, provided they want to hear absolutely everything he did.

Jehan Ariste Alain (3 February 1911 – 20 June 1940) was a French organist and composer. He wrote choral music, including a Requiem mass, chamber music, songs and three volumes of piano music. But it is his organ music for which he is best known. Jehan Alain was not only an organ composer, as his vocal works, chamber music and piano compositions show, but it remains true that he dedicated to this instrument the most essential elements of his genius. This is not surprising when we remember the origins of the composer and the context in which he came to music.
Marie-Claire Alain (10 August 1926 – 26 February 2013) was a French organist and organ teacher best known for her prolific recording career. She have won the 2nd prize for organ at the Geneva International Music Competition in 1950.

Ray Brown has many great contributions to jazz as a leader and a sideman, but one additional way in which he helped jazz was his encouraging Gene Harris to give up his early retirement and go back out on the road. The pianist was a part of Brown’s groups for several years before he formed a working quartet and became a leader for good once again. This 1988 concert at a since-defunct Santa Monica night club (co-owned by Brown) finds the two, along with drummer Jeff Hamilton, at the top of their game. A phone ringing in the background distracts momentarily from Brown’s opening solo in his composition “The Real Blues,” during which Harris repeats a bluesy tremolo, which may be an inside joke about the early distraction. Harris take a blues-drenched approach to “Mona Lisa” before giving way to the leader’s solo, while his lyrical approach to “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” is shimmering. Hamilton’s soft brushes are prominent in “Little Darlin’,” but his explosive playing provides a powerful pulse to the very unusual strutting take of “It Don’t Mean a Thing.” This extremely satisfying CD is warmly recommended. 4/5 ~~AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden

This recording was not only Louis Armstrong’s finest record of the 1950s but one of the truly classic jazz sets. Armstrong and his All-Stars (trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Barney Bigard, pianist Billy Kyle, bassist Arvell Shaw, drummer Barrett Deems, and singer Velma Middleton) were clearly inspired by the fresh repertoire, 11 songs written by W.C. Handy. Their nearly nine-minute version of “St. Louis Blues” — with witty vocals, roaring Young trombone, and a couple of long majestic trumpet solos — is arguably the greatest version of the oft-recorded song. Other highlights include “Loveless Love,” “Beale Street Blues,” and a romping version of “Ole Miss Blues.” Essential music for all serious jazz collections.

PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 4.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 60:52 minutes | Scans included | 4,27 GB

The Swedish Jazz Kings third Opus 3 release is a swinging tribute to Louis Armstrong. Concentrating on a period when Louis was revolutionizing the shape of jazz music, this album contains many tunes from Armstrong’s early repertoire. The sound, as captured by the talented Opus 3 engineers, is even more stunning on SACD. Highly Recommended.

Opus 3 presents The Swedish Jazz Kings’ 3rd album for the label. This time around The Kings are joined by 1 of the world’s foremost interpreters of Louis Armstrong’s music – Australia’s jazz star & cornet player, Bob Barnard. The majority of tracks feature yet another jazz giant, English trombone player Roy Williams. There is surely no band more qualified than The Swedish Jazz Kings to do just this, they have after all, devoted a large portion of their musical lives to the preservation & portrayal of Louis’ music! As the title suggests, the main emphasis on this album is on Louis Armstrong’s early music, the time at which many consider him to have been at his creative peak.

Tracklist:
01. Oriental Strut
02. You’re Next
03. My Heart
04. Melancholy Blues
05. Ory’s Creole Trombone
06. Georgia Bo-Bo
07. The Last Time
08. Wild Man Blues
09. Everybody Loves My Baby
10. Two Deuces
11. Keyhole Blues
12. Sunset Café Stomp

This is Opus 3’s 12th SACD & 7th multichannel album & the 3rd pure DSD recording. Just like the previous album with Lars Erstrand, the surround effect on this album, i.e. the information in the rear speakers, is meant to enhance the ambience & atmosphere of the jazz club & make the listener feel that he is “there!” Just like all other Opus 3 multichannel albums, we do not use either the centre or the subwoofer channels. — Jan-Eric Persson, Opus 3
