State of Confusion gave the Kinks their biggest single in nearly 20 years, but they didn’t try to replicate the music hall-tinged pop of “Come Dancing” on its follow-up, Word of Mouth, preferring to concentrate on straight-ahead hard rock. Originally released as a double-album set in 1986, just after the Kinks had their last run at chart success, Come Dancing With the Kinks (The Best of the Kinks 1977-1986) does an excellent job of summarizing their stadium rock and AOR radio favorites on Arista. It leaves no single or radio favorite behind, while adding such terrific obscurities as “Long Distance” (originally only released as a bonus track on the State of Confusion cassette; the early ’80s were a completely different world than the late ’80s), the non-LP single “Father Christmas,” the wonderfully sentimental album track “Better Things” (a close, upbeat cousin to Dylan’s “Forever Young”), and the charming “Heart of Gold.” In addition to these, there are live takes of “You Really Got Me” and “Lola” taken from the fine One From the Road album. It winds up being a representative selection of the Kinks’ time as stadium warriors. They may have released some good albums during this period — and Misfits and Low Budget are close to great — but listeners looking for the bare essentials from this period will not be disappointed with this first-rate collection. [Three songs — “Catch Me Now I’m Falling” plus the title tracks to Misfits and Sleepwalker — were dropped from the CD reissue of Come Dancing in order to have it fit the running time of a late-’80s compact disc.]  ~~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Everybody’s in Show-Biz is a double album with one record devoted to stories from the road and another devoted to songs from the road. It could be labeled “the drunkest album ever made,” without a trace of hyperbole, since this is a charmingly loose, rowdy, silly record. It comes through strongest on the live record, of course, as it’s filled with Ray Davies’ notoriously campy vaudevellian routine (dig the impromptu “Banana Boat Song” that leads into “Skin & Bone,” or the rollicking “Baby Face”). Still, the live record is just a bonus, no matter how fun it is, since the travelogue of the first record is where the heart of Everybody’s in Show-Biz lies. Davies views the road as monotony — an endless stream of identical hotels, drunken sleep, anonymous towns, and really, really bad meals (at least three songs are about food, or have food metaphors). There’s no sex on the album, at all, not even on Dave Davies’ contribution, “You Don’t Know My Name.” Some of this is quite funny — not just Ray’s trademark wit, but musical jokes like the woozy beginning of “Unreal Reality” or the unbearably tongue-in-cheek “Look a Little on the Sunnyside” — but there’s a real sense of melancholy running throughout the record, most notably on the album’s one unqualified masterpiece, “Celluloid Heroes.” By the time it gets there, anyone that’s not a hardcore fan may have turned it off. Why? Because this album is where Ray begins indulging his eccentricities, a move that only solidified the Kinks’ status as a cult act. There are enough quirks to alienate even fans of their late-’60s masterpieces, but those very things make Everybody’s in Show-Biz an easy album for those cultists to hold dear to their hearts.

The Kinks – The Kinks’ Greatest: Celluloid Heroes (1976) [SACD 2007]

Although they weren’t as boldly innovative as the Beatles or as popular as the Rolling Stones or the Who, the Kinks were one of the most influential bands of the British Invasion. Like most bands of their era, the Kinks began as an R&B/blues outfit. Within four years, the band had become the most staunchly English of all their contemporaries, drawing heavily from British music hall and traditional pop, as well as incorporating elements of country, folk, and blues.

Released in 1976, just as the Kinks ended their notoriously uneven tenure at RCA, The Kinks’ Greatest: Celluloid Heroes is a summary of their time at the label. Since they didn’t have many genuine hits while at RCA, this winds up being a haphazard sampling of concept albums. Occasionally, an album is accurately represented. For instance, the selections from Muswell Hillbilles are perfect, but considering that nearly half this compilation leans on that terrific record, they would have to be. Apart from that album, the selection is decidedly hit and miss. It isn’t that singles are missing – their lone British hit from this time, “Supersonic Rocket Ship,” is nowhere to be found – or that albums are overlooked (no Schoolboys in Disgrace), it’s that highlights like “Here Comes Yet Another Day” and “Sweet Lady Genevieve” are left on their original albums.

Anne-Sophie Mutter obviously had fun making this disc. In the quiet pieces (Massenet, Ysaÿe, Fauré) which serve as interludes, she plays with her usual exquisite taste. In the showpieces, though, she goes to town, sliding, scooping, exaggerating, & letting all the stops out. The gypsy inflection she uses in Ravel’s Tzigane & Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen is delicious. Even a ridiculous orchestral arrangement of Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata is more amusing than offensive. With James Levine & the Berlin Philharmonic providing uncommonly alert & powerful support, & Deutsche Grammophon’s realistic sound, this disc is a real treat for violin lovers.

Not just because this disk is the only 1 in the series without a review on this site, but also because it concerns a re-issue in SACD format, I thought it might be useful to share my views with the Super Audio community. To start with the end: My verdict is a wholehearted positive 1 in both artistic & technical sense.
Although Mr. Zacharias’ playing hardly needs any further praise (in its CD format Vol. 1 has been widely lauded in various critics’ circles) I would nonetheless like to reassure potential buyers & lovers of an unadulturated Mozart that it is his stylistic & delicate playing that constitutes the best part of this disc. Mozart is not the kind of composer requiring key-bangers (no offence meant!). His piano concertos are best served by non-glamorous, non-virtuoso & non-eccentric, natural players, who understand the ingenious ‘simplicity’ of which Mozart seems to hold the secret. This is what we hear in this re-issued 1st installment of the (then) intended full cycle of the 27 concertos for piano & orchestra (with the obvious omission of the early concertos, wrongly or correctly attributed to Wolfgang Amadeus M. as well as, so far, those for 2&3 pianos).

Will listeners raised on virtuoso performances of Mozart’s piano concertos be able to make room in the hearts for Christian Zacharias’ recordings with the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne? It depends on how willing they are to forego the pleasures of virtuosity for the pleasures music-making. This is not to say that Zacharias isn’t a virtuoso pianist. As his 20 years of recordings make very clear, he has talents & abilities far beyond those of most mortal pianists. But it is to say that, as those recordings make equally clear, Zacharias is far more interested in music-making than he is in virtuosity. As both pianist & conductor here, Zacharias leads performances which are all about sympathetic interplay, about musicians listening to each other, about the meaning behind the notes & the joy inside the notes. The Lausanne musicians respond joyfully to Zacharias’ direction, playing with him & not for him & breathing life into every line & sonority. While listeners raised on virtuoso performances may find something lacking, those listeners who value playing together more than showing off will find much to enjoy.

In this 3rd volume, Zacharias’ Mozart becomes essential, if not quintessential, in a universe for piano & concerto that is fascinating. The Concerto for Piano & Orchestra #17 in G major KV 453 dates from 1784, & inspired the musician Alfred Einstein to say: “In a friendly key are hidden many mysterious smiles & painful wounds – words cannot be found to describe the permanent irisation of feelings in the 1st movement, the passionate interiority of the 2nd.” The Concerto for Piano & Orchestra #19 in F major KV 459 was also composed in 1784 right after “the 4th of the 6 Quartets dedicated to Haydn”, states Mihel Parouty. Three days after finishing it on December 14, Mozart became a Freemason. Leading from the piano the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne to heights of subtlety, Christian Zacharias brings out a thousand colors from these eternal scores. With exemplary phrasing he opens the doors to a world that is often approached but rarely captured with such intelligence. It is true that Zacharias’ Mozart is rarely flamboyant, but he brings forth unique beauty that only the deaf cannot hear. He allows his musical discourse to breathe, a reminder of days when music had universal meaning. This is a Super Audio CD that eclipses all others.

This volume in the series seems to have taken a step up, with playing which previously might have been a little cosy now edgier & with more contrast in light & shade. The overall ensemble is excellent, & these are very good Mozart concerto interpretations indeed. Sound quality is up to MDG’s usual high standard, with a well-scaled ambience in Mch, & the 2+2+2 channel setup with height channels works fine in my 5.1 setup, despite my not reassigning the centre & sub speaker.

For those who already appreciate Rachel Podger’s unique brand of magic I’ll just say that this return to recorded Bach is lovely and all that one could hope for. All that one looks for is here, and there is more.
For those who are not familiar with Rachel Podger, she is a unique voice among violinists. She has absorbed the principles of late Baroque performance practice and made them a part of herself, so that the articulation and inflection of that rhetorical approach to music flows from her as a natural idiom of expression. But this is only half of the picture. She also excels at communicating the logic and coherence of the music. She’s not so busy being expressive that she forgets where she is. She can turn a melodic corner with an elastic flourish that makes one catch one’s breath, but she never goes off the road or gets lost. Her style is an intensifying balance between opposing forces: florid yet subtle, expressive yet ordered, emotional yet objective.
On this recording there is something of an added richness in her expression, and if anything an even stronger sense of relating each moment to the whole, creating an enlarged sense of integrity and structure in the music even while she executes ravishing rhetorical details with an agile liquid flow. Then again perhaps it is just that the intersection of Ms. Podger and Bach always magifies her virtues, and the present CD is merely the first opportunity we have had to clearly hear her rendition of a Bach concerto. These recordings have some of the energy and wit of a live performance–there is a strong feeling that the performers know each other well and are having fun…

No doubt many of you are wondering whether I should be recording Bach’s complete sonatas and partitas at the age of only 21. Perhaps I should have waited a bit longer? Well, patience has seldom been my strong point, and after all I have already waited a number of years for an opportunity to record these works. During the first six years of study with my teacher Ana Chumachenco, I studied the sonatas and partitas thoroughly, and first performed both cycles in their entirety in the Bach year 2000, during the course of two evenings at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival. Ever since that intensive “Bach month”, in which I concentrated purely on the music of this composer, I have felt the urgent need to hold on to the sonatas and partitas by means of a recording. This musical experience led me to overcome my many years of aversion to studio recordings. Thus, I decided at the time already to reserve my first solo CD for the music of Bach.
One reason for this was that I have played Bach’s music on my violin more or less on a daily basis since I was nine; and I had begun to explore the Wohltemperierte Klavier on the piano two years earlier. As far as I am concerned, his works represent the fountainhead of music and the basis for all musicians. My day has to begin with Bach, and I find it very difficult to concentrate on the music of another composer before having “cleansed myself”, as it were, with Bach. Furthermore, he is the composer who plays the most important role in my memories of childhood and development.
The recording at hand represents a segment of a musical journey which by no means has been concluded. My interpretation of this music is bound to change later on; nevertheless, I wanted to be able to hold on to my experience and understanding of these wonderful compositions to date.

Secret Treaties is the third studio album by the American hard rock band Blue Öyster Cult, released in 1974 by Columbia Records. The album spent 14 weeks in the US album charts, peaking at No. 53. It was certified gold by the RIAA in 1992.

In 1975, a poll of critics of the British magazine Melody Maker voted Secret Treaties as the “Top Rock Album of All Time”. In 2010, Rhapsody called it one of the all-time best “proto-metal” albums.
Many songs from this album found their way into BOC playlists over the following years, including “Career of Evil”, “Subhuman”, “Astronomy” and “Harvester of Eyes”. It is the only Blue Öyster Cult album that does not feature any track with lead vocals by guitarist Donald “Buck Dharma” Roeser.

David Lloyd-Jones – Holst Gustav The Planets (2004)

This version of Holst’s endearing masterpiece, “The Planets”, sounds very good in Naxos’ super audio 5.1 technology. I do not have the point one (subwoofer) hooked up in my house and assume, by listening to the recording in 5.0, that the timpani — which are already very powerful and forward placed — would be explosive if you listened in 5.1. The sound is very good otherwise, with wide ranging and natural orchestral body and timbre. It is not the best super audio sound I’ve heard but it is good and a big improvement over the stereo sound on the last version of “The Planets” I purchased, the one Berlin Philharmonic and Simon Rattle released last year.
The performance, by David Lloyd-Jones and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, is one built on extreme contrasts. Lloyd-Jones has done everything in his power to contrast the loudness of the loud sections, such as “Mars”, against the quietness of the quieter sections, such as “Venus” and “Saturn”. While the timing for each section is in a normal range based on other recordings I have, Lloyd-Jones seems to proceed as (sic) a measured pace in the quieter sections because they are nearly silent in the hushed moments.
This makes for exciting contrast in your home, where the power of the opening Mars sequence — with timpani brought forward by the sound technology — makes the following Venus section a bit difficult to adjust to. This is not much of a problem when listening at home on a decent super audio stereo setup. However, when you listen in the car, you literally cannot hear the quieter sections. I turned up my car stereo as loud as it would go and still endured long stretches on nothingness that was uniquely frustrating in my experience. This doesn’t make it a bad issue, of course, but it means I won’t be listening to this one in the car.

Two rarely recorded Haydn violin concertos frame Rachel Podger’s performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante in E flat on this disc. Both concertos have only string accompaniment, here provided by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, and a discreet harpsichord (the player’s name unaccountably omitted from the list of the orchestra personnel in the accompanying booklet). Rachel Podger has chosen to play both concertos on her own Pesarinius violin (1739) that she feels is most suited to the style of these works and few would disagree with her choice. Her agile and spirited playing in the outer movements is complemented by her pure cantilena in the slow movements. As is to be expected, both works are full of baroque idioms and, while neither presents Haydn at his most inventive, they make an enjoyable pairing. The C major concerto is the more interesting of the two with a beautiful slow movement in which Podger’s rapt playing over pizzicato strings is a pleasure to hear.

MDG’s complete recording of Mozart’s piano compositions with Christian Zacharias in the double role as pianist & conductor of the Lausanne Chamber Orchestra continues with KV 488, certainly the most-performed piano concerto by the great Salzburg composer, complemented here by KV 246 & KV 175, Mozart’s very 1st piano concerto. Mozart himself regarded his 1st piano concerto of December 1773 as a gem. Five years later he continued to enjoy great success with it in Mannheim “because here it pleases quite well,” as he proudly reported to his father. Even at his Vienna academies of 1782-83 the concerto still figured significantly for him. When he sent its new finale, the Rondo (KV 382), to his father, he wrote, “I made it especially for me, & nobody but my dear sister can play it after me.”

A photograph album full of treasured memories – David Roth’s third album with Stockfisch-Records “Will You Come Home”. Singer/songwriter Roth transports the listener on a magical journey through highlights in his life.
David Roth is a musical portrait artist who conveys a wealth of stories, anecdotes and remembered scenes with a physically felt intensity.
