‘Love Flows Like A River’ by Jacintha (on the Harmony Records label) features beautifully recorded contemporary arrangements of several Mandarin favorites as well as a couple of jazz tunes, performed in Mandarin. The album explores the theme of love, with its ebb and flow, rise and fall, and many changing currents, just like a river. According to the record label, the concept for the album evolved, as Jacintha spent several months in 2004 selecting songs and working on the arrangements. It soon became clear that the heart of the album would be a collection of sad and well-known love songs – not only the six beloved Chinese songs.
At the time of the album’s release, Jacintha was already well-known in the audiophile market. ‘Love Flows’ was recorded over four days at Audioplex Recording Studio in Tampines, Singapore with Los Angeles recording engineer Mike Ross. Vintage tube mikes (AKG, Telefunken and Neumann) were used during the session. The vocal mike on Jacintha was a legendary U-49 tube. The entire session was recorded all-analogue through a classic Neve Analogue Mixing Board. The multi-track masters were flown from Singapore to Los Angeles and all the mixing for the eight vocal tracks was done by Ross at LA-FX in Burbank. The final tracking and mixing session for the instrumental track, I Have An Affair, was done at the world famous Oceanway Recording Studios in Hollywood in May 2005 and features Anthony Wilson (of the Diana Krall Quartet) on acoustic guitar.

Although it didn’t originally have anything to do with their sound, the Cowboy Junkies’ name wound up seeming pretty accurate: their music was grounded in traditional country, blues, and folk, yet drifted along in a sleepy, narcotic haze that clearly bore the stamp of the Velvet Underground.

Featuring only one original song, the Cowboy Junkies’ debut, Whites Off Earth Now!!, captures the band forming their own sound through covers, including songs by Robert Johnson and Bruce Springsteen. It’s not as captivating as their later releases, but it’s fascinating to hear their signature country-on-valium sound develop. Margo Timmins sings beautifully.

Cowboy Junkies have a sound, a vibe. There’s no denying it. You can tell it’s them within a few notes and each successive record seems to pick up right where the last one left off. Some, like The Trinity Sessions, are dark, moody, and mellow, like being coated in honey and draped in velvet. Others, take Pale Sun, Crescent Moon for example, seem downright energetic in comparison. Open is more in line with the first batch, though it has moments of near-enthusiastic revelry. With Alan Anton’s plump (rather than phat) basslines, Peter Timmins’ laid-back drumming, and Michael Timmins’ dirty guitars to ride on, Margo Timmins contributes her trademark sensual, yet understated vocal performances. The whole gang sounds as good as ever. And, although he may be called a songwriter, Michael Timmins is more a true poet with musical inclinations. Full of wonder and romance, fear and passion, Open is simply the next chapter in his sublime book of heartfelt verse. The compassionate tenderness of “Thousand Year Prayer” contrasts nicely with the harmonica and feedback duel of “Dragging Hooks.” And darn if “I’m So Open” doesn’t bounce right along on a little groove. They’ve got it all here. If nothing else, this band is one of the most consistent around. Though album sales may not always reflect it, they continually deliver strong records that refuse to be faulted for anything other than being non-mainstream.

Who says you can’t make a great record in one day — or night, as the case may be? The Trinity Session was recorded in one night using one microphone, a DAT recorder, and the wonderful acoustics of the Holy Trinity in Toronto. Interestingly, it’s the album that broke the Cowboy Junkies in the United States for their version of “Sweet Jane,” which included the lost verse. It’s far from the best cut here, though. There are other covers, such as Margo Timmins’ a cappella read of the traditional “Mining for Gold,” a heroin-slow version of Hank Williams’ classic “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” “Dreaming My Dreams With You” (canonized by Waylon Jennings), and a radical take of the Patsy Cline classic “Walkin’ After Midnight” that closes the disc. Those few who had heard the band’s previous album, Whites Off Earth Now!!, were aware that, along with Low, the Cowboy Junkies were the only band at the time capable of playing slower than Neil Young and Crazy Horse — and without the ear-threatening volume. The Timmins family — Margo, guitarist and songwriter Michael, drummer Peter, and backing vocalist and guitarist John — along with bassist Alan Anton and a few pals playing pedal steel, accordion, and harmonica, paced everything to crawl.

There aren’t a lot of greatest-hits albums with seven new songs, which is exactly what All the Way: A Decade of Song is. There are just nine hits on this hits collection, and of those, only a handful — “If You Asked Me To,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Power of Love,” “Because You Loved Me,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” and “My Heart Will Go On” — were huge hits in the U.S. Her first American hit, “Where Does My Heart Beat Now,” isn’t here, nor is her duet with Barbra Streisand, “Tell Him.” Naturally, this means it’s not a definitive collection, but rather an unsatisfying album that feels suspiciously like a piece of product. The best of the hits, like the Meat Loaf-ian epic “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now” and “My Heart Will Go On,” are certainly among the best adult contemporary songs of the decade, and the new stuff would pale in comparison, even if it was very good — which, by and large, it is not. Two numbers, the danceable “That’s the Way it Is” and the pretty ballad “If Walls Could Talk,” work, but the cover of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” falls flat and “All the Way,” complete with old vocals from Sinatra, is a disaster. The remaining three aren’t bad, but they’re not particularly memorable, especially compared to the hits. And that’s the problem with All the Way — if it had been a straight hits collection, with “That’s the Way it Is” and “If Walls Could Talk” added to the end, it would have been fine, but padding it with nearly a full album worth of new material hurts it.

Celine Dion’s Falling into You returned the Canadian vocalist to the top of the American charts, and for good reason. Although the album is formulaic, it’s a well-executed, stylish, and catchy formula, accentuating her natural vocal charm. Dion shines on ballads like “Because You Love Me” and mock epics like Jim Steinman’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now.” Between those two peaks, she tackles dance-pop and love songs with grace; that effortless elegance saves the mediocre material on the album from being tedious. Though there are a couple of weak tracks, Falling into You is a remarkably well-crafted set of adult contemporary pop and Dion’s best album.

The Alban Berg Quartet was founded in 1971 and within a decade was established as one of the finest string quartets in the world. It was known for its large recorded sets of the complete quartets of many masters of the genre. The members of the quartet – which included violinists Günter Pichler, Gerhard Schulz, Kakuska, and cellist Valentin Erben, of whom Pichler, Schulz and Erben were founding members – were all faculty members of the Wiener Hochschule für Musik and also taught master classes on German chamber music regularly at the Musikhochschule in Cologne. The group won 30 major international recording awards, representing virtually every top prize of note.

At the age of 14, she was already performing in the American military clubs in Japan, picking up the English language by singing international pop songs of that time. Nowadays, she represents feeling and soul within her songs, no matter whether she sings in English or Japanese. After her marriage, she moved to the United States and was discovered and sponsored by Earl “Fatha” Hines. She found her enthusiastic fans touring San Francisco, Las Vegas, Montreal and lots of places in California, performing in the clubs, local radio stations or on TV. In the ‘80s, she started a roving life between the United States and Japan. Beat Kaestli turns his attention to the Great American Songbook on Invitation, his auspicious debut for Chesky Records. Recorded at St. Peter’s Church in Chelsea, this stirring collection of jazz standards is the perfect showcase for Kaestli’s hauntingly beautiful voice, which falls somewhere in the Chet Baker-Kenny Rankin range. His voice is imbued with clarion articulation, naturally relaxed phrasing and uncanny feeling.

Born in Bern, Switzerland, Beat Kaestli (pronounced “Bay-ott Kest-lee”) sings in hushed tones and romantic visions on this, his second recorded effort. With a voice that has been gauged somewhere between Chet Baker and Kenny Rankin, Kaestli’s immaculate phrasing and low-key demeanor are best suited for late-night listening. While his vocals are the centerpiece, the instrumentalists he uses are nearly an afterthought, shadowing his lyric content, not embellishing, but perfectly accompanying as if they are entirely in the background. This is not a critique, just a fact, as guitarist Paul Meyers, bassist Jay Leonhart, drummer Billy Drummond, and guest horn soloists (Joel Frahm and Kenny Rampton) only lightly frame these standards. Beyond Baker or Rankin, perhaps Mark Murphy’s stoic persona also plays a part in how Kaestli interprets the light but funky title selection, the slow ballad “It Could Happen to You,” or “Day In, Day Out” which does recall both older and modern-day crooners. Kaestli works best with Leonhart, as all jazz singers love hooking up in duet intros or full-blown bluesy tunes with the upright bassist of their choice. This exhilarating Canadian singer/songwriter grew up in the maritime province of Prince Edward Island off Canada’s East coast. Already at the age of twelve Brooke Miller made her un-timid mark singing in a punk band. And, with her looks, one is not hard put to imagine that the attractive artist could have made a successful career in acting or modeling. This, however, would have been to deprive the musical world of an artist who distills all of the experiences to produce the album’s uniquely inspired, character rich compositions delivered with emotional warmth and melodic softness – but also with plenty of drive and energy. The rich timbre of her voice and the quality of the guitar sound while entirely unique, resonates with influences ranging from Bruce Coburn to Joni Mitchell. The rhythmic, catching melodies with fresh elements of folk and a dash of country evoke the oceanic grandeur of her homeland. Brooke is aided by Don Ross, on bass, piano and Fender Rhodes.

Buffalo Daughter is a three member group consisting of Sugar Yoshinaga, Yumiko Ohno and MoOoG Yamamoto, often augmented by a drummer and other guests. Their sound is heavily influenced by German progressive rock and techno pop, but also includes bits of dub, club, shoe gaze and post-rock influences. Given their mix and match style, and that they emerged in the mid-90s, they are often considered as part of the Shibuya-kei movement.

This SACD from PentaTone was recorded originally in 1970, not long after he’d made his official debut as an organist. (His organ recitals are notable for being played from memory.) The performances were taken down in the then-new quadraphonic system & released on Philips LPs. But of course quadraphonic LPs were a less than ideal carrier for the 4ch sound on the tapes. Fortunately PentaTone, a company founded by ex-Philips personnel, has been reissuing quad recordings on SACDs remastered from those tapes & they sound spectacularly lifelike. They are, of course, in 4ch sound, not the 6ch that the modern SACD system is capable of.

Otis Redding’s third album, and his first fully realized album, presents his talent unfettered, his direction clear, and his confidence emboldened, with fully half the songs representing a reach that extended his musical grasp. More than a quarter of this album is given over to Redding’s versions of songs by Sam Cooke, his idol, who had died the previous December, and all three are worth owning and hearing. Two of them, “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Shake,” are every bit as essential as any soul recordings ever made, and while they (and much of this album) have reappeared on several anthologies, it’s useful to hear the songs from those sessions juxtaposed with each other, and with “Wonderful World,” which is seldom compiled elsewhere. Also featured are Redding’s spellbinding renditions of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” (a song epitomizing the fully formed Stax/Volt sound and which Mick Jagger and Keith Richards originally wrote in tribute to and imitation of Redding’s style), “My Girl,” and “You Don’t Miss Your Water.” “Respect” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” two originals that were to loom large in his career, are here as well; the former became vastly popular in the hands of Aretha Franklin and the latter was an instant soul classic. Among the seldom-cited jewels here is a rendition of B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby” that has the singer sharing the spotlight with Steve Cropper, his playing alternately elegant and fiery, with Wayne Jackson and Gene “Bowlegs” Miller’s trumpets and Andrew Love’s and Floyd Newman’s saxes providing the backing. Redding’s powerful, remarkable singing throughout makes Otis Blue gritty, rich, and achingly alive, and an essential listening experience.

Janis Joplin’s second masterpiece (after Cheap Thrills), Pearl was designed as a showcase for her powerhouse vocals, stripping down the arrangements that had often previously cluttered her music or threatened to drown her out. Thanks also to a more consistent set of songs, the results are magnificent – given room to breathe, Joplin’s trademark rasp conveys an aching, desperate passion on funked-up, bluesy rockers, ballads both dramatic and tender, and her signature song, the posthumous number one hit “Me and Bobby McGee.” The unfinished “Buried Alive in the Blues” features no Joplin vocals – she was scheduled to record them on the day after she was found dead. Its incompleteness mirrors Joplin’s career; Pearl’s power leaves the listener to wonder what else Joplin could have accomplished, but few artists could ask for a better final statement.

Jacqueline du Pre’s recording of Elgar’s Cello Concerto with Sir John Barbirolli conducting the London Symphony Orchestra is widely recognized as the definitive recording of the Elgar, the one against which all others are measured. Du Pre’s career was cut tragically short by Multiple Sclerosis, forcing her to quit performing in 1973. She died in 1987 at age 42. She was married to the famous conductor/pianist Daniel Barenboim. This album joins Space Music with Synth-Pop in a very imaginative manner, which proves why the artist succeeded in becoming a musical visionary at a time when shaping risky concepts of sound was by no means as technologically easy as it is now. Kaske, who since then has been developing an intense musical career in various recording projects as well as being the author of soundtracks and music for television advertisements, displays an excellent combination of artistic creativity and mastery in his skills with the electronic medium, which means in fact that this work is a true jewel for the lovers of innovative electronic music, with a remarkable beauty, while at the same time avoiding arid experimentation or commercial formulae which are repeated ad nauseam.

This SACD is a sonic journey, made for dark rooms and friends sitting around with the music taking the listener to other worlds, realms and alternate universes. The sound is superb though the booklet shows no images. There is an excellent sense of space though it is hard to tell what is actual studio space and artificial reverb. Please do not take these comments to be a negative as the sound is fine!! I have to be honest and state that I know nothing about the composer. However, I had decided to now check out his previous releases as I loved 98% of the music on the disc and I look forward to hearing some of the composer’s music. A fund disc with some great sounds and great musicians.

When back in 2003 Rachel Podger’s recording of Vivaldi’s 12 violin concertos Op.4 ‘La Stravaganza’ Vivaldi: La Stravaganza – Podger/Arte Dei Suonatori was released it was universally acclaimed & quickly went on to garner numerous awards from many sections of the music press including Gramophone, Stereophile & The Absolute Sound as well as winning a Diapason d’Or. It is also interesting to note that even on SA-CD.net more than 100 people have recommended that recording. In the intervening years Rachel Podger has widened her recorded repertoire to make further highly regarded recordings of works by Bach, Haydn & Mozart, but she has now made a triumphant return to Vivaldi with this wonderful set of the composer’s 12 Violin Concertos Op.9 known as ‘La Cetra’ .

Makoto Ozone is popular Japanese pianist. His 10th album, sounds like Chick Corea’s records of early 70s – “Return to Forever” being a good example. The tone of his mellow electric piano has resulted in a new landscape in jazz. All songs are original compositions.
