Mastered for SACD by Kevin Gray | Audio Fidelity # AFZ-209 | Genre: Rock

Joe Cocker’s debut album holds up extraordinarily well across four decades, the singer’s performance bolstered by some very sharp playing, not only by his established sideman/collaborator Chris Stainton, but also some top-notch session musicians, among them drummer Clem Cattini, Steve Winwood on organ, and guitarists Jimmy Page and Albert Lee, all sitting in. It’s Cocker’s voice, a soulful rasp of an instrument backed up by Madeline Bell, Sunny Weetman and Rossetta Hightower that carries this album and makes “Change in Louise,” “Feeling Alright,” “Just Like a Woman,” “I Shall Be Released,” and even “Bye Bye Blackbird” into profound listening experiences. But the surprises in the arrangements, tempo, and approaches taken help make this an exceptional album. Tracks like “Just Like a Woman,” with its soaring gospel organ above a lean textured acoustic and light electric accompaniment, and the guitar-dominated rendition of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” – the formal debut of the Grease Band on record – all help make this an exceptional listening experience. The 1999 A&M reissue not only includes new notes and audiophile-quality sound, but also a pair of bonus tracks, the previously unanthologized B-sides “The New Age of Lily” and “Something Coming On,” deserved better than the obscurity in which they previously dwelt.

She has sold over 20 million records worldwide and is the best-selling Belgian female artist of all time. “9” is her 5th French album and 7th studio album in total to be released. The album is considered by many as a shift in Lara’s music style, and vocal performance, primarily because it was Lara’s first album that long time producer, Rick Allison, did not produce. The Album was produced by Jean-Félix Lalanne. He also, with Fabian, composed many of the songs in the album.

Mariinsky Orchestra, Valery Gergiev – Wagner: Das Rheingold (2013)
PS3 Rip | 2x SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 5.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 02:27:42 minutes | Digital Booklet | 8,31 GB

The first part of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, and the shortest opera in the cycle, Das Rheingold serves as an introductory evening performance that opens the series, followed successively by three full-length music dramas, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Die Götterdämmerung. However, this concert recording by Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra is the second installment in their Ring, following the early 2013 release of Die Walküre. By reviving Wagner’s music in Russia, which was banned during the Soviet era and remained little explored for decades, Gergiev has tapped into a rich vein of artistry that brings a fresh appreciation of the Ring’s drama and sonorities. The international cast, headed by René Pape as a powerful Wotan, features some of the best Wagner singers available, including Ekaterina Gubanova as Fricka and Nikolai Putilin as Alberich. The critically praised Mariinsky Orchestra has demonstrated its great skill in playing Wagner’s demanding score, and the SACD presentation gives it astonishing clarity, depth, and presence, all required to make these mythological music dramas come to life.

After the guest-star-drenched No Reason to Cry failed to make much of an impact commercially, Eric Clapton returned to using his own band for Slowhand. The difference is substantial — where No Reason to Cry struggled hard to find the right tone, Slowhand opens with the relaxed, bluesy shuffle of J.J. Cale’s “Cocaine” and sustains it throughout the course of the album. Alternating between straight blues (“Mean Old Frisco”), country (“Lay Down Sally”), mainstream rock (“Cocaine,” “The Core”), and pop (“Wonderful Tonight”), Slowhand doesn’t sound schizophrenic because of the band’s grasp of the material. This is laid-back virtuosity — although Clapton and his band are never flashy, their playing is masterful and assured. That assurance and the album’s eclectic material make Slowhand rank with 461 Ocean Boulevard as Eric Clapton’s best albums.

Japanese Remastered Reissue ‘2013 / Esoteric Company, Japan # ESSW-90083

Hélène Grimaud, who has lived with the early D minor Concerto for decades, has called Brahms’s Op 15 ‘a piece I need to survive’. Indeed, she recorded it with that kind of urgency for Erato back in 1997 with Kurt Sanderling and the Staatskapelle Berlin, her passion making up for the lack in sheer power you’d find in accounts by the likes of Brendel or Pollini.

This reissue of classical music masterpieces by ESOTERIC has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using hybrid SACD technology to improve sound quality. These new audio versions feature ESOTERIC’s proprietary re-mastering process to achieve the highest level of sound quality.

Eschewing its usual heavy orchestral sound in favor of a more stripped-down instrumentation, Dutch violinist Janine Jansen’s second album offers a fresh interpretation of one of the most performed classical works, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons. The 2005 follow-up to her Barry Wordsworth-conducted debut, the subtle but passionate renditions of the “La Primavera,” “L’estate,” “L’autunno,” and “L’inverno” concertos are performed with a sparse, eight-piece ensemble including Lithuanian violinist Julian Rachlin, her cellist brother Maarten, and harpsichordist father Jan.

Martha Argerich – Chopin: The Legendary 1965 Recording (1999) [Japan 2011]

How can it be that a recording by one of today’s indisputably unequaled pianists performing some of her prime repertory–made fresh within months of her triumph in the 1965 Warsaw International Chopin Competition–could languish for decades in the vaults before its official release? Chalk it up to the exclusivity clauses of rival recording companies and legal constraints from which not even Wotan with the help of Loge could extricate himself. Thankfully this belated EMI release – recorded in a few sessions at the Abbey Road studios – is finally available.

It’s a significant complement to Argerich’s other accounts of Chopin on disc. From the white-hot intensity of Argerich’s way with the composer, you can easily extrapolate a sense of what had recently wowed the jury in Warsaw. The Argentinean pianist undertakes the Third Sonata as a vast, big-voiced, far-reaching statement that encompasses both molten power and moments of almost unbearably intimate lyricism (listen closely to her gestures of illumination in the Largo). With a characteristically unforced spontaneity, Argerich sounds the shattering chords that launch the finale (recorded in one take); her sense of flow in the Nocturne No. 4 is a perfect mesh for the illusion of improvising that is so central to Chopin. She commands the logic–both emotional and musical–of the composer’s skittish turns in the Scherzo No. 3 and crafts three of the mazurkas into perfectly chiseled character pieces. The sheer force of Argerich’s personality might seem overwhelming to those accustomed to a tamer Chopin–listen to how she dives into the A-flat Polonaise–but it’s always at work dusting off tired clichés and uncovering the music’s expressive wealth. For those who know about Argerich’s artistry, this disc is indispensable; anyone who has yet to make that enviable discovery will find it (together with the Argerich anthology in Philips’ Great Pianists series) a great place to begin.

This crossover hit, the soundtrack to Jane Campion’s film, is subtle, pretty, and just a little bit bland. Nyman keeps the theatrics to a minimum, crafting an evocative work that manages to be both personal and universal. He also lets the music run its course, never pushing or cutting off a piece until it says what it needs to. A towering commercial achievement from a decidedly non-commercial artist.

The Mozart Piano Quintet was founded in 2000 and has been catapulted to the top echelon of the international music world. Their previous recordings on MDG have all been well received. This recording is one of MDG’s best 2+2+2 recordings & all details are clearly audible with a placing of the listener in the best seat of a very fine chamber hall. Enthusiastically recommended.

Founding Father
Today Mozart’s piano quartets (KV 478 and KV 493) rank not only as the highlights of his piano oeuvre but also as the founding documents of this musical genre. No doubt about it: these works offer the Mozart Piano Quartet a special opportunity for paying homage to their musical patron in the best MDG quality. Two hundred years ago, however, the public and press found such music difficult to grasp.

String Upgrade
During the second half of the eighteenth century piano chamber music either was extremely easy, that is, was intended for amateurs, or involved virtuoso works in which the strings served merely to accompany the pianist’s brilliant keyboard display. Mozart developed a “new style.” He significantly upgraded the parts of the string instrumentalists, suddenly making them the pianist’s equal partners.

Perplexed Publisher
The G minor quartet was particularly difficult for the public to digest. The stormy and richly contrastive beginning was an initial source of irritation, and then Mozart presented the foundational ideas of his composition with an intensity rare even in Beethoven. Then came the rondo with its confusing panoply of themes. The E flat major quartet made a much more favorable impression, but the publisher Hoffmeister did not find it easy to market. It had been agreed that Mozart was to write a third piano quartet, but his publisher then said he could wait on it.

Top Echelon
Within the shortest time the Mozart Piano Quintet, founded in 2000, has been catapulted to the top echelon of the international music world. This is hardly surprising inasmuch as four international soloists and finalists and first-prize winners at many international competitions form its instrumental lineup: Paul Rivinius (piano), Mark Gothoni (violin), Hartmut Rohde (viola), and Peter Hörr (violoncello). Their interest in new repertoire makes them an ideal MDG partner.

The label Pentatone issues a new recording featuring conductor Marc Albrecht and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra presenting Brahms’ Piano Quartet for violin, alto, cello and piano in g minor op. 25 in the orchestration by Arnold Schöenberg. Schöenberg orchestrated the quartet during his exile in California following a commission by Otto Klemperer who premiered it with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. It is more of a re-writing than an arrangement, giving to Brahms’ music a flamboyant and glorious sound: Marc Albrecht’s account is joyful and refreshing, rich in dynamics with fast and brisk tempos that turn the famous final Rondo alla zingarese in a breathtaking orchestral firework.

A real gem serve as a fill up of this CD: it is the Accompaniment to a cinematographic scene a nine minutes piece, seldom performed and seldom recorded, written by Schöenberg in 1929, upon request of the publisher Heinrichshofen. Marc Albrecht successfully brings to life the sense of imminent catastrophe that pervades this music; a catastrophe set to begin with Hitler becoming chancellor of the Reich after the 1933 elections after which the composer emigrated to US. It is an enigmatic piece worthy to be listened, which deserves to be list among Schöenberg’s masterpieces, which finds in this recording a wonderful interpretation.

Nicholas Gunn, also known as Nick Gunn, is a classically trained musician and music producer. He is a Top-Ten Billboard charting musician known for his instrumental works under Nicholas Gunn and his EDM (Electronic Dance Music) works.

This inventive, beautifully melodic composer, flutist, keyboardist, and producer has made nature appreciation a true art form. He launched his career a decade ago with Afternoon in Sedona and has recorded incredibly lush sonic interpretations of the Southwest and Grand Canyon since then. His national park itinerary moves east to Tennessee this time, where he’s inspired once again to create an impressionistic travelogue of tribal rhythms, dreamy atmospheres, and hypnotic melodies, spiced with evocative nature sounds, all in the service of telling tales of the Great Smokies’ ancestral past with an eye toward their future preservation (he’s donating ten percent of the proceeds to the Natural History Association to help preserve the park’s beauty). Good thing he provides a lush road map in the form of lovely photography and a liner-note explanation for each track, because the music sounds much like his Southwest tomes, with a little more musical mist (to reflect that atop the mountains) and a little less Native Americanisms. It’s an enjoyable ride nonetheless, beginning with “Call of the Wild,” dedicated to the rare red wolf and moving from soft and gentle to aggressive and primal, with Gunn weaving his flute through a forest of nature sounds and thick percussion. “The Highest Point” is illustrated with building musical drama as listeners are urged to climb up to Clingman’s Dome and take a deep breath. The deeply reflective “Chieftain’s Song” is an ode to the Scottish-Irish settlers of centuries past, while “The Place of Blue Smoke” combines gentle morning mist and a rumbling distant thunderstorm. The cricket-enhanced “Azalea Sunrise” is an ample showcase for the graceful work of guest guitarist John Bishoff. Gunn’s journeys are the new age listener’s joyful gain.

The word ‘vision’ is much misused these days yet to talk of Nikolaus Harnoncourt’s ‘view’ of Bruckner’s Fifth won’t quite do. This is more a realisation than an interpretation, musically vivid but spiritually serene.

I’ve seen it said that the real Bruckner is to be found in his themes, not his developments; that he was an embodier rather than a seeker. Not the least remarkable feature of Harnoncourt’s performance is his refusal to manipulate the structure of the long outer movements – the transitions in particular. This is risky. Scholars worry about what they call ‘disjunction’; so do conductors and listeners. I confess that after first hearing the performance I was more than happy to turn to Franz Welser-Möst’s more theatrical, structurally explicit reading, recorded live with the London Philharmonic in Vienna’s Konzerthaus during the 1993 Whitsun holiday.

Harnoncourt, however, drew me back to his serene – I suspect Baroque-inspired – view of this ‘Symphony of Faith’. Serene but now slow. By the clock, this is one of the quickest Fifths on record, though only the Adagio is taken more swiftly than usual. It was here that Bruckner began the symphony in the pit of despair in 1875 with a keening oboe melody which he marked ‘Sehr langsam’ but scored alla breve. Harnoncourt treats it allegretto after the manner of a threnody by Bach or Mozart, whose Requiem is quoted during the course of the movement. Furtwängler, surprisingly, took a similar view of the movement, as does Welser-Möst.

The ‘liveness’ of the live performance owes much to Harnoncourt – his persona fuelling the music-making not the concept, which is as it should be – though the superlative playing of the Vienna Philharmonic is also a factor. The light-fingered realisation of the exquisite string traceries is a constant source of wonder; tuttis are glowing and unforced. The hall of the Musikverein helps, too; with an audience present it offers a uniquely natural-sounding Bruckner acoustic.

As Oliver Nelson is known primarily as a big band leader and arranger, he is lesser known as a saxophonist and organizer of small ensembles. Blues and the Abstract Truth is his triumph as a musician for the aspects of not only defining the sound of an era with his all-time classic “Stolen Moments,” but on this recording, assembling one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to form an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section. “Stolen Moments” really needs no comments, as its undisputable beauty shines through in a three-part horn harmony fronting Hubbard’s lead melody. It’s a thing of beauty that is more timeless as the years pass. The “Blues” aspect is best heard on “Yearnin’,” a stylish, swinging, and swaying downhearted piece that is a bluesy as Evans would ever be. Both “Blues” and “Abstract Truth” combine for the darker “Teenie’s Blues,” a feature for Nelson and Dolphy’s alto saxes, Dolphy assertive in stepping forth with his distinctive, angular, dramatic, fractured, brittle voice that marks him a maverick. Then there’s “Hoedown,” which has always been the black sheep of this collection with its country flavor and stereo separated upper and lower horn in snappy call-and-response barking. As surging and searing hard boppers respectively, “Cascades” and “Butch & Butch” again remind you of the era of the early ’60s when this music was king, and why Hubbard was so revered as a young master of the idiom. A must buy for all jazz fans, and a Top Ten or Top Fifty favorite for many.

Oscar Peterson developed a friendship with Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, who proceeded to record the pianist in his first-rate studio beginning in the early ’60s, even though Peterson was under an exclusive contract to Verve at the time. The solution to this problem was to wait until after it expired, and then a number of these sessions were released on various BASF or MPS LPs (and later on Pausa LP reissues). Action represents some of Peterson’s earliest work for Brunner-Schwer; these sessions were recorded before an invited audience in the studio, with the pianist’s working trio of Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen. The group seems extremely relaxed and inspired by the small group of loyal fans, with a brisk waltz treatment of “At Long Last Love” and an extended workout of fellow pianist Billy Taylor’s ballad “Easy Walker” starting things off with a flourish. Their approach to “Tin Tin Deo” is remarkably subtle, while Peterson is at his most lyrical during a pair of Gershwin selections, “I’ve Got a Crush on You” and “A Foggy Day.” The influence of Art Tatum is apparent with Peterson’s darting runs in “Like Someone in Love”.

The third volume of Oscar Peterson’s Exclusively for My Friends series, all recorded with an invited audience in the warm studio of producer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, features live trio sessions with bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham. The program opens with an unusual medley of Ray Brown’s “Waltzing Is Hip” (played with gusto) and a gently swinging “Satin Doll.” The influence of Art Tatum is apparent during his intricate runs within “Love Is Here to Stay,” while the multifaceted original “Sandy’s Blues” (dedicated to his wife) combines a dark mood with a swinging setting. The lighthearted waltzing treatment of “Alice in Wonderland” is pure joy, while another original, “Noreen’s Nocturne,” is simply a showstopper.

This is yet another memorable concert by the Oscar Peterson Trio recorded in Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer’s excellent studio. With bassist Sam Jones and drummer Bobby Durham, Peterson tears into the old gospel favorite “Travelin’ On” with a passion second to none. Following it is a beautiful treatment of Johnny Mandel’s timeless ballad “Emily,” which runs for over ten minutes but never loses its impact. Durham sets the pace with his soft percussion to set up Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado” (later known as “Quiet Nights”), though Peterson devours the song whole with a breathtaking display of his formidable technique. Francy Boland’s “Sax No End” was a relatively new composition, having been recorded for the first time just the previous year by the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band. But one can almost hear a larger ensemble by listening to Peterson’s virtuoso interpretation in an uptempo setting, assisted by Jones’ agile bass and Durham’s steady percussion. Peterson cools off his audience with an extended exploration of Benny Carter’s “When Lights Are Low,” though his fresh approach makes it seem like a brand new composition. Like other releases in Oscar Peterson’s Exclusively for My Friends series, Travelin’ On is warmly recommended.

Their third recording was one of the group’s stronger outings, even if it confirms their status as folk popularizers rather than musical innovators. In particular, this record was essential to boosting the profile of Bob Dylan, including their huge hit cover of “Blowin’ in the Wind,” their Top Ten version of “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” and the bluesy “Quit Your Lowdown Ways,” which Dylan himself would not release in the ’60s (although his version finally came out on The Bootleg Series). “Stewball,” “All My Trials,” and “Tell It on the Mountain” were other highlights of their early repertoire, and the dramatic, strident, but inspirational “Very Last Day” is one of the best original tunes the group ever did.

Rage Against the Machine spent four years making their second album, Evil Empire. As the title suggests, their rage and contempt for the “fascist” capitalist system in America hadn’t declined in the nearly half-decade they were away. Their musical approach didn’t change, either. Lead vocalist Zack de la Rocha is caught halfway between the militant raps of Chuck D and the fanatical ravings of a street preacher, shouting out his simplistic, libertarian slogans over the sonically dense assault of the band. Since the band didn’t perform together much after 1993, there isn’t a collective advance in their musicianship. Nevertheless, guitarist Tom Morello demonstrates an impressive palette of sound, creating new textures in heavy metal, which is quite difficult. Even with Morello’s studied virtuosity, the band sounds leaden, lacking the dexterity to fully execute their metal/hip-hop fusion – they don’t get into a groove; they simply pound. But that happens to fit the hysterical ravings of de la Rocha. Though his dedication to decidedly left-wing politics is admirable, his arhythmic phrasing and grating shouting cancel out any message he is trying to make. And that means Evil Empire succeeds only on the level of a sonic assault.
