The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet is a successful multi-guitar ensemble regularly performing, known for its variety of repertory. They are known for using nylon string guitars to imitate a variety of instruments and effects. They have played in many styles; Baroque, Bluegrass, Flamenco, Rock, and New Age are among their repertoire.

On the heels of its successful Latin album, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) mines the same vein with Brazil — seemingly a decision that diverges from its California pastiche aesthetic, but still one very much in line with the trends. Brazilian songbirds fill clubs that are around the corner from Brazilian steakhouses. And, even if it lacks a certain sense of Brazilian relaxation (call it Brazil speeded up to keep pace with L.A. traffic), the disc showcases its eclectic strengths. There’s its welcome ability, for example, to pick out repertory that’s worthwhile and has that crucial half-remembered quality that seems to be so hard for classical musicians, who veer between boring their audiences and bewildering them, to find. The opening Más que nada, originally a success for Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, was not the biggest hit of the bossa nova craze but now emerges as one of the deepest, evolving elegantly into a realm of extended harmonies that the LAGQ handles with aplomb. The group reaches back to the classics of bossa nova, in the form of a lovely medley of songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, but also enlists contemporary talents like Sergio Assad, who arranged that medley. The various guest musicians who appear (the vocalist in the Jobim is Luciana Souza) are, as usual with the LAGQ, beautifully worked into the overall concept; one hears, in addition to vocals, a flute, soprano saxophone, and a shifting array of percussion (hear Souza accompanying herself on the fascinating tambourine-like pandeiro on Marco Pereira’s Sambadalú, track 9), but there’s never a sense that one is listening to anything other than a guitar quartet program. Among the fresh highlights in the form of new compositions is one by another Assad: Clarice Assad, daughter of Sergio, contributed the brisk Bluezilion, track 8. The music sticks close to the bossa nova idiom but spices it sufficiently with turns toward Villa-Lobos and toward more contemporary material. Finally there’s the superb sound from Telarc, which would perform a public service if it conducted seminars on how to record guitars close up without leaving the listener awash in distracting noises. The blue print on black background in the booklet will be outlawed and punishable by decapitation come the revolution, so that’s not a major problem, and in the meantime anyone looking for Brazilian flavors will enjoy this lighthearted disc.

A great concept and a grand conceit, the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s disc entitled Guitar Heroes is a disc of radically rearranged and reimagined adaptations, transcriptions, and extrapolations of the quartets’ players own favorite guitar players. The arrangements are tremendous, the transcriptions are terrific, and the extrapolations are amazing. Who would have thought that Jimi Hendrix’s manner of playing could sound so refined, or that Steve Howe’s Mood for a Day could sound so exquisite, or that Chet Atkins’ echo effects could sound so ethereal? And who would have thought that the music of Frank Zappa and Django Reinhardt could be so superbly recomposed and yet so true to the soul of the music? But the astonishing virtuosity of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s playing makes believers of everyone and the astounding reality of the sound of Telarc’s recording makes everyone believe that they are sitting in the same room.

Helium Vola is a German “Electro-Medieval” band founded in 2001 by instrumenentalist and composer Ernst Horn, who was also one of the founding members of Qntal. In the contract with Chrom Records Horn insisted on Helium Vola not being seen as a successor of Qntal nor being marketed as such. The band’s name is Latin meaning “Fly, Helium” – a reference to the noble gas Helium which is used to fill balloons. The project’s main vocalist is Sabine Lutzenberger, though the project has utilised a number of guest singers and musicians. Liod is the project’s second album.

Lucky Peterson is an American musician who plays contemporary blues, fusing soul, R&B, gospel and rock and roll. He plays guitar and keyboards. Music journalist Tony Russell, in his book The Blues – From Robert Johnson to Robert Cray has said, “he may be the only blues musician to have had national television exposure in short pants”.

A rare new release from the folk and blues reissue specialist label JSP, James & Lucky Peterson’s If You Can’t Fix It is the first full-length collaboration by the father and son bluesmen. Neither man overshadows the other, as they take turns showcasing their own songs and each man’s uniformly fine guitar playing. The best track by far is James’ fiery “Cripple Man,” one of his most passionate and driven performances in years, on a song that has the potential to become a modern Chicago-style blues standard. Lucky’s standout is the epic “Too Young to Die,” which evolves into an extended guitar duel between father and son. In a rather unusual turn for traditional electric blues recordings, If You Can’t Fix It was released in the nascent SACD format before it was available as a standard compact disc.

Mira is a self-released album from the international band Jienat, mixed and mastered on two crystal-clear Blu-ray CDs. One CD offers the album as an audio-only Blu-ray disc; the second presents the album as a standard CD/high-definition SACD. The SACD presented a huge, totally believable soundscape, with various drums and voices emerging from a dense blackness. Mira is a world-music sonic spectacular, a voice-and-percussion workout that transcends geographic boundaries.

To the best of our knowledge, Jienat’s twin-disc Mira is the first release of “popular music” recorded in true 5.1 surround. It is also the first world music release on the Blu-ray format. Jienat’s center of gravity of is in the small town of Hammerfest, 3 hours by car from the North Cape. Go due North from here, and you will encounter no mainland until way on the other side of the North Pole. It is the home of Andreas Fliflet, who composes and produces the music. It is performed almost exclusively by voices and drums— sometimes heaps of them. Emotional settings range from «party!!» to «lullaby». The true sonic placement of the listener in the middle of the ensemble creates a goose-bumps-inducing prescence. Recording sessions for this disc has been made in locations ranging from the cobblestone streets of tropical Salvador de Bahia, Brazil to countryside medieval churches on the Åland Islands. But first and foremost it has been made in the Jienat base camp Joikeredet, literally 150 meters away from the Arctic Ocean.

Era (styled as +eRa+) is a New Age music project by French composer Eric Lévi. The band has sold more than 12 million albums. They use lyrics (by Guy Protheroe) which although similar to Greek or Latin are in fact deliberately devoid of any exact meaning.

Beginning with the new song “Rien Ne S’arrête,” this prescient collection of Patricia Kaas recordings includes the best songs from her 15-year recording career with Columbia, from her 1988 breakout on the yearning “D’Allemagne.” Though the included version of “Mademoiselle Chante le Blues” isn’t her original (it was recorded live in 2000), other than that small caveat, Best of 1987-2001 delivers Kaas’ best-loved hits in the best sound they’ve ever been delivered. The package also includes a bonus track from 1999, “Mon Chercheur d’Or”.

Known for a terrifying rendition of Otis Redding’s hit “(Sittin’ On The) Dock of the Bay” (among others), Michael Bolton tears up every classic soul tune he can get his hands on. SACD reissue of 1990 ‘Best Of’ compilation for the female pop-rock quartet, pressed onto a gold disc. 14 tracks including, ‘Eternal Flame, ‘Hazy Shade of Winter’, ‘ManicMonday’, ‘If She Knew What She Wants’ and ‘Walking Down Your Street’.

The Bangles’ transformation from Merseybeat and garage-smart guitar band to near-definitive example of buffed-and-polished corporate popsters is one of the great rock mysteries of the ’80s. What was up with that video for “Walk Like an Egyptian,” anyway? Greatest Hits puts it all in perspective, tracing the curve from the post-Beatles group sneer of “Hero Takes a Fall” to the deadly earnest Susanna Hoffs showcase of “Eternal Flame.” Shortly after that ballad hit No. 1, the group split. Now unfairly remembered as little more than space fillers on turn-of-the-decade airwaves, the Bangles here make a good case for their spirit, their own songwriting gifts, and, of course, those voices.

Weighing in at 14 tracks, Greatest Hits is a good, basic collection of the Bangles’ biggest singles, containing all the hits, including the previously non-LP “Hazy Shade of Winter,” plus a couple of album tracks and, for the dedicated, a new cover of the Grass Roots’ “Where Were You When I Needed You.” It may be easy to carp about fine album tracks from All Over the Place and Different Light that should have been included, yet this is a fine sampler/introduction that might not necessarily capture the Bangles’ best — in this context, their ties to the Paisley Underground and college rock seem nonexistent — but still finds them as masters of irresistible pop singles.

Coming off such conceptual, theatrical, sleazy hard rock records as the massively successful School’s Out (1972) and Billion Dollar Babies (1973), the Alice Cooper group decided that their next release would be more along the lines of their earlier, more straightforward work (à la Love It to Death). While Muscle of Love was a gold-certified Top Ten success, it performed below expectations (their previous two albums peaked at number two and number one, respectively) and would unfortunately prove to be the original Alice Cooper band’s last studio album together. The album may not be as coherent as their previous classics (producer Bob Ezrin took a leave of absence) and more filler is present than usual, yet Muscle of Love is perhaps Alice Cooper’s most underrated record – more than a few overlooked and forgotten classics reside here. The two best-known tracks are undoubtedly the Top 20 anthem “Teenage Lament ’74,” which features none other than Liza Minnelli and the Pointer Sisters on backing vocals, and the boisterous title track. But other tracks are just as good – the Led Zep-stomping opener, “Big Apple Dreamin’ (Hippo),” the gentle “Hard Hearted Alice” (a precursor to Cooper’s future ballad-oriented direction), the raging “Working Up a Sweat,” and “Man with the Golden Gun” (which was written for the James Bond movie of the same name, but rejected). A forgotten hard rock classic.

Bine Bryndorf is one of the finest organists of our time. On this SACD professor Bine Bryndorf performs Nielsen’s organ works on the ideally suited organ at Nikolaj Kunsthal in Copenhagen, adding a selection of Hymns and Spiritual Songs with baritone Torsten Nielsen. This album is an indispensable introduction to Nielsen’s organ music.

This stimulating survey of Carl Nielsen’s organ music, consists of the late-written 29 Little Preludes (1929) interspersed in four groups and Commotio (from a year later). These little and large pieces Commotio lasts over twenty minutes are unmistakably Nielsen in their harmonies and quirks, and the programme as a whole is made various thanks to the contrasting Hymns and Spiritual Songs that find the appropriately named baritone Torsten Nielsen singing (to organ accompaniment) as if gently preaching from a pulpit; it’s a consoling effect. There are a few other shorts, but the big piece, on track 40, is the amazing Commotio, which may be found daunting in its exploration and complexity, but Nielsen’s music is well-worth the effort, and Bine Bryndorf’s championing of it gets a warm embrace. Her musicianship is steadfast, the Copenhagen organ has authenticity on its side, and the recording and presentation are typically excellent of Dacapo.

Generally acclaimed as the strongest album of his comeback, and by some as his best since Trout Mask Replica, Doc at the Radar Station had a tough, lean sound owing partly to the virtuosic new version of the Magic Band (featuring future Pixies sideman Eric Drew Feldman, New York downtown-scene guitarist Gary Lucas, and a returning John “Drumbo” French, among others) and partly to the clear, stripped-down production, which augmented the Captain’s basic dual-guitar interplay and jumpy rhythms with extra percussion instruments and touches of Shiny Beast’s synths and trombones. Many of the songs on Doc either reworked or fully developed unused material composed around the time of the creatively fertile Trout Mask sessions, which adds to the spirited performances. Even if the Captain’s voice isn’t quite what it once was, Doc at the Radar Station is an excellent, focused consolidation of Beefheart’s past and then-present.

With yet one final Magic Band lineup in place, featuring Richard Snyder on bass and Cliff Martinez on drums alongside returning vets Jeff Moris Tepper and Gary Lucas, Beefheart put the final touch on his recording career to date with Ice Cream for Crow. It’s a last entertaining blast of wigginess from one of the few truly independent artists in late 20th century pop music, with humor, skill, and style all still intact (as even the song titles like “Semi-Multicoloured Caucasian” and “Cardboard Cutout Sundown” show). With the Magic Band turning out more choppy rhythms, unexpected guitar lines, and outré arrangements, Captain Beefheart lets everything run wild as always, with successful results. Sometimes he sounds less like the blues shouter of lore and more of a spoken word artist with an attitude, thus the stuttering flow of “The Host the Ghost the Most Holy.” “Hey Garland, I Dig Your Tweed Coat” is even more entertainingly outrageous, Beefheart’s addictive if near impenetrable ramble about tobacco juice and straw hats and more backed by an insanely great arrangement. Magic Band members each get chances to shine one way or another – “Evening Bell” in particular demonstrates why Lucas went on to later solo renown, a complex, suddenly shifting solo instrumental that sits somewhere between background music and head-scratching “how did he do that?” intrigue.

An absolutely wonderful 1961 set from Blakey and company, who demonstrate here how to be note-perfect without leeching away the emotion of a performance. Aside from Blakey’s divine drum work, the standouts include Jaymie Merritt’s trippy bass fingerwork and Wayne Shorter blowing his heart out on tenor sax.
