Some groups “get it”, some don’t. Flim & the BB’s do. They have all the characteristics of a good fusion group, including quality compositions, great musicianship, and the right dynamics. Flim & the BB’s are both tight and loose at the same time, and they never overdo it. TriCycle is a very good album by a very good band.

This is the debut album by ace bassist Jimmy “Flim” Johnson & sax virtuoso Dick Oatts with keyboards & drums by Bill Barber & Bill Berg that is well-known among audiophiles as a test CD for evaluating audio systems. That aside, the music in & of itself is outstanding. The title cut Tricycle has strong keyboards with heavy bass support. Highwire has a distinct circus flavor, but is delicate & almost music-box-like. The tour de force track for me is Lunch Hour Wedding March. The piece starts with a staccato piano intro with synth harmony blending in immediately. The middle of the number is prime “heading down the highway” music. Flim Johnson’s strong bassline is awesome. For fans of piano & sax, one cannot waste money buying this CD.

The legendary first lineup of Chick Corea’s fusion band Return to Forever debuted on this classic album (titled after the group but credited to Corea), featuring Joe Farrell on soprano sax and flute, the Brazilian team of vocalist Flora Purim and drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, and electric bass whiz Stanley Clarke. It wasn’t actually released in the U.S. until 1975, which was why the group’s second album, Light as a Feather, initially made the Return to Forever name. Nonetheless, Return to Forever is every bit as classic, using a similar blend of spacy electric-piano fusion and Brazilian and Latin rhythms. It’s all very warm, light, and airy, like a soft breeze on a tropical beach – hardly the sort of firebrand approach to fusion that Miles Davis, Tony Williams, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra were exploring, and far less rooted in funk or rock. Corea also bathes the album in an undertone of trippy mysticism, not only in the (admittedly dated) lyrics, but in his cosmic keyboard wanderings, which remain melodic and accessible through most of the record. There’s one genuine pop song in the groovy samba “What Game Shall We Play Today,” and while “Sometime Ago” has similar elements, it’s part of an ambitious side-long medley that features a stream-of-consciousness intro and a jubilant, Spanish/Mexican-style closing section called “La Fiesta,” complete with castanets and flamenco modes. The title track is another multi-sectioned work, featuring Corea and Purim in wordless unison on two different, catchy themes, plus breezy work from Farrell and lots of Brazilian-flavored rhythmic interplay. And the dreamy, meditative “Crystal Silence” is an underrated gem waiting to be rediscovered. Certainly, this edition of Return to Forever wasn’t inclined toward high-voltage jazz-rock (as the next one was), but this group’s two albums still stand as some of the most imaginative and distinctive early fusion recordings.

David Bridie is one of Australia’s most innovative musicians and songwriters, balancing his career in bands and on record with the composition of soundtrack music…

Inventive Australian songwriter David Bridie finds new layers in his well-established gift for moody atmospherics with this solo recording debut. Fans of his work with the chamber pop band My Friend the Chocolate Cake will recognize Bridie’s experimental spirit and his knack for rich melancholic loveliness. But they will also note a deliberate move away from acoustic and orchestral instrumentation in favor of detailed electronic soundscapes. Act of Free Choice has more in common with Bridie’s ambient experiments for Not Drowning, Waving than anything in his recent catalog (indeed, former bandmate John Phillips lends a hand on a few tracks), but this project clearly has its own sonic identity. Like Neil Finn’s Try Whistling This — another adventurous solo debut by a masterful alt-pop songwriter from down under — Bridie’s effort explores a dark new frontier. The album is dark and contemporary but rooted spiritually in the ancient natural mystery of the outback wilderness that plays a significant lyrical role in tracks like “The Koran, the Ghan and a Yarn” and “Kerosene.” “Breath” provides a striking example of this anachronistic tapestry, weaving together exotic Aboriginal wailing, resonant acoustic piano chords, gentle clarinet solos, and distorted techno effects. Bridie’s most effective vocal strategy is to find a respectfully unobtrusive place in the thick of his gorgeous soundscapes. When he plays a more dominant role, as on the unusually aggressive ambient rocker “Float,” his breathy tenor can be slightly grating in its resemblance to ’80s pop crooners like Bryan Adams and Michael W. Smith. Bridie is a good singer, but his real strength lies in a compositional adventurousness that places him in a league with younger studio wizards like Moby and DJ Shadow.

With their second album Rides Again, the James Gang came into their own. Under the direction of guitarist Joe Walsh, the group – now featuring bassist Dale Peters – began incorporating keyboards into their hard rock, which helped open up their musical horizons. For much of the first side of Rides Again, the group tear through a bunch of boogie numbers, most notably the heavy groove of “Funk #49.” On the second side, the James Gang departs from their trademark sound, adding keyboard flourishes and elements of country-rock to their hard rock. Walsh’s songwriting had improved, giving the band solid support for their stylistic experiments. What ties the two sides of the record together is the strength of the band’s musicianship, which burns brightly and powerfully on the hardest rockers, as well as on the sensitive ballads.

A one-time protégé of Arthur Rubinstein, pianist Janina Fialkowska’s artistry is all the more astonishing considering her return to the concert stage in 2004 following the removal of an aggressive tumour in her left arm. For this recording, she joins the Chamber Players of Canada to perform arrangements of Mozart’s piano concertos K. 413 – 415 for piano and string quintet.

There is no question that Mozart’s keyboard concertos could be and were played by chamber string groups in their own time. Mozart himself made arrangements of his concertos for chamber combinations and clearly allowed for the possibility that the works would be played this way. However, he offered the revealing explanation that if he didn’t rush out his own arrangements, someone else would beat him to it. Those curious about Mozart’s sound world will find the well-played performances here of value, but for the average listener they’ll sound a bit thin. The keyboard concertos were public works by which the newly footloose Mozart tried to make the biggest impression he could upon the Viennese public, and damping down the contrast between solo and tutti, as inevitably happens when the piano has only a string quintet to play off against, loses some of the excitement the musical lines were written to create. (The solo parts for Mozart’s piano concertos sound quite different from those of his piano quartets, and with good reason.) And of course Mozart’s glorious wind writing is gone for good. The performers, aware of the sparse quality of the orchestral passages, fill out the sound of the quartet Mozart would have used with a contrabass doubling the bottom line, but the piano still sounds constrained. (A fortepiano works much better in these arrangements than does the modern grand used here.) The players, young Canadian up-and-comers all, have a feel for Mozartian melody, and Atma’s Super Audio sound is superbly clear. Most listeners, however, will find that these arrangments were made for people who had heard Mozart play and wanted to reproduce what they heard as best they could at home, without benefit of modern sound equipment. They might have found the idea of using the arrangements when the real thing was available slightly bizarre.

Source: ISO SACD | ©  Prestige Records
Recorded: September 7, 1956 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, NJ

This unusual meeting of four tenor saxophone players from different “schools” was part of the Prestige Friday afternoon jam session series but far from a typical outing. The giant forebears of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker inform the backgrounds of the performers on this LP — Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, and John Coltrane — and other influences such as Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, and the Sonnys (Stitt and Rollins) show up, too, depending on which of the four protagonists you’re talking about.

With the Red Garland Trio supplying the underpinning, the four tenors meet on the common ground of the blues (“Bob’s Boys”), “I Got Rhythm” (“Tenor Conclave”), and two old standards. (The originals are by Mobley.) Rather than the stylistic differences, what stands out here is the compatibility and spirit of the four meeting on this common ground in an uncommon session.

These four sides should not be hard to locate, as the primary participants in this November 30, 1956, session have all issued them within their individual catalogs. However Tenor Conclave was first released as credited to the “leaderless” Prestige All-Stars — consisting of tenor saxophonists John Coltrane, Hank Mobley, Al Cohn, and Zoot Sims. Providing support are pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Art Taylor. The Mobley-penned title track commences the effort with the quartet of tenors showing off their stuff in high-flying style. It takes a couple of passes and somewhat of a trained ear to be able to link the players with their contributions, but as is often the case, the whole tends to be greater than the sum of the parts. After a brief introduction with all four rapidly reeling off short riffs, Mobley charges ahead into truly inspired territory. The midtempo take of “Just You, Just Me” keeps things lively with a light swinging pace that is custom-made for bringing the combo’s jocular side to the surface, particularly toward the end as they “trade fours,” with each tenor blowing four bars before passing the melody on. The other Mobley composition is “Bob’s Boys,” and by all accounts it is the most compelling piece on the outing. The blues-based tune rollicks as Coltrane, Mobley, Cohn, and Sims find themselves configured in a seeming myriad of sonic face-offs. Wrapping up Tenor Conclave is an ultra-cool and sophisticated “How Deep Is the Ocean?” Cohn commences the long and luscious reading with a subtle strength, suggesting the powerful undercurrent flowing throughout the number. Also, listeners are treated to what is possibly Garland’s finest interaction, leading right into Sims, Chambers, and finally a sublime Coltrane caboose. –Lindsay Planer

Recorded: March 7, 1963 (#3, 6), October 2, 1963 (all others) at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

One of Mobley’s best, this album features two 1963 all-star quintets: one with Lee Morgan and Andrew Hill, the other with Donald Byrd and Herbie Hancock. Philly Joe Jones is the driving force throughout.

Why any critic would think that Hank Mobley was at the end of his creative spark in 1963 — a commonly if stupidly held view among the eggheads who do this for a living — is ridiculous, as this fine session proves. By 1963, Mobley had undergone a transformation of tone. Replacing the scintillating airiness of his late-’50s sides was a harder, more strident, almost honking one, due in part to the influence of John Coltrane and in part to Mobley’s deeper concentration on the expressing blues feeling in his trademark hard bop tunes. The CD version of this album sets the record straight, dropping some tunes form a session months earlier and replacing them with alternate takes of the title cut and “Carolyn” for historical integrity, as well as adding “Syrup and Biscuits” and “Comin’ Back.” Mobley assembled a crack band for this blues-drenched hard-rollicking set made up of material written by either him or trumpeter Lee Morgan. Other members of the ensemble were pianist Andrew Hill, drummer Philly Joe Jones, and bassist John Ore. The title track, which opens the set, is a stand-in metaphor for the rest: Mobley’s strong and knotty off-minor front-line trading fours with Hill that moves into brief but aggressive soloing for he and Morgan and brings the melody back, altered with the changes from Hill. On Morgan’s “Me ‘n’ You,” an aggressive but short bluesed-out vamp backed by a mutated samba beat, comes right out of the Art Blakey book of the blues and is articulated wonderfully by Mobley’s solo, which alternates between short, clipped phrases along the line of the changes and longer trill and ostinatos where the end of a musical line is dictated by his breath rather than a chord change. Morgan is in the pocket of the blue shades, coloring the ends of his lines with trills and short staccato bursts, warping them in Hill’s open, chromatic voicings. All eight cuts here move with similar fluidity and offer a very gritty and realist approach to the roots of hard bop. Highly recommended. –Thom Jurek

During his stint with Miles Davis, Mobley’s four Blue Note sessions with bandmates Wynton Kelly and Paul Chambers are considered his finest and most lyrical work. Grant Green and Philly Joe Jones complete the group on this gem.

This is one of the best-known Hank Mobley recordings, and for good reason. Although none of his four originals (“Workout,” “Uh Huh,” “Smokin’,” “Greasin’ Easy”) caught on, the fine saxophonist is in top form. He jams on the four tunes, plus “The Best Things in Life Are Free,” with an all-star quintet of young modernists — guitarist Grant Green, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones — and shows that he was a much stronger player than his then-current boss Miles Davis seemed to think. –Scott Yanow

Following the first Celine Dion collection, All the Way: A Decade of Song, by roughly a decade, The Essential Celine Dion doubles almost everything about the initial collection: it covers two decades instead of one and has three discs, not one. It’s almost an overcompensation for how All the Way concentrated on newer recordings at the expense of hits, but then again, Celine has had more hits in the ten years since All the Way, so it makes sense that Essential is a bigger, grander collection. The problem is, apart from her cover of Roy Orbison’s “I Drove All Night,” almost none of her new-millennium hits are as memorable as her singles from the ’90s, so this triple CD doesn’t offer too much of an enticement for fans to replace 1999’s single-disc set. But for those listeners who are looking for an overview of Celine Dion’s two decades as an international superstar, Essential fits the bill well as it has all her big adult contemporary hits — “Where Does My Heart Beat Now,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “If You Asked Me To,” “Because You Loved Me,” “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” and “My Heart Will Go On” — all sequenced chronologically. –Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era’s most accomplished soul artists. With the Theme From Shaft, Hayes delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. This CD features cinematic moments of instrumentation, composed and produced by Hayes while being performed by the Bar-Kays – some down-tempo, others quite jazzy.

Of the many wonderful blaxpoitation soundtracks to emerge during the early ’70s, Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era’s most accomplished soul artists, having helped elevate Stax to its esteemed status; therefore, his being chosen to score such a high-profile major-studio film shouldn’t seem like a surprise. And with “Theme from Shaft,” he delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. Besides this song, though, there aren’t too many more radio-targeted moments here. “Soulsville” operates effectively as the sort of downtempo ballad Hayes was most known for, just as the almost 20-minute “Do Your Thing” showcased just how impressive the Bar-Kays had become, stretching the song to unseen limits with their inventive, funky jamming. For the most part, though, this double-LP features nothing but cinematic moments of instrumentation, composed and produced by Hayes while being performed by the Bar-Kays — some downtempo, others quite jazzy, nothing too funky, though. Even if it’s not quite as enjoyable as Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly due to its emphasis on instrumentals, Shaft still remains a powerful record; one of Hayes’ pinnacle moments for sure.

Although this is Isaac Hayes’ third long-player, he had long been a staple of the Memphis R&B scene — primarily within the Stax coterie — where his multiple talents included instrumentalist, arranger, and composer of some of the most beloved soul music of the ’60s. Along with his primary collaborator, David Porter, Hayes was responsible for well over 200 sides — including the genre-defining “When Something Is Wrong With My Baby,” “Soul Man,” “B-A-B-Y,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’,” and “I Had a Dream.” As a solo artist however, Hayes redefined the role of the long-player with his inimitably smooth narrative style of covering classic pop and R&B tracks, many of which would spiral well over ten minutes. The Isaac Hayes Movement (1970) includes four extended cuts from several seemingly disparate sources, stylistically ranging from George Harrison’s “Something” to Jerry Butler’s “I Stand Accused” and even Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself.” These early Hayes recordings brilliantly showcase his indomitable skills as an arranger — as he places familiar themes into fresh contexts and perspectives. For example, his lengthy one-sided dialogue that prefaces “I Stand Accused” is halting in its candor as Hayes depicts an aching soul who longs for his best friend’s fiancée. Even the most hard-hearted can’t help but have sympathy pains as he unravels his sordid emotional agony and anguish. Hayes’ lyrical orchestration totally reinvents the structure of “Something” — which includes several extended instrumental sections — incorporating equally expressive contributions from John Blair (violin). Both “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself” and the comparatively short (at under six minutes) “One Big Unhappy Family” are more traditionally arranged ballads. Hayes again tastefully incorporates both string and horn sections to augment the languid rhythm, providing contrasting textures rather than gaudy adornment.

Finally, after almost half a decade of serious dues-paying, Earth, Wind & Fire took off commercially with its fifth album, Open Our Eyes. EWF had been delivering great albums since 1971, but it wasn’t until 1974 that the public proved genuinely receptive to Maurice White’s mystical and unorthodox take on soul and funk. No longer would EWF enjoy only a small cult following. Thanks to treasures like “Kalimba Song,” the gritty funk smoker “Mighty Mighty,” and the unforgettable “Devotion,” Open Our Eyes became EWF’s first gold album and went to the top of the R&B charts. It’s also interesting to note that with this album, singer Jessica Cleaves was gone, resulting in the first time EWF had an all-male lineup.

Earth, Wind & Fire’s artistic and commercial winning streak continued with its ninth album, All ‘N All, the diverse jewel that spawned major hits like “Serpentine Fire” and the dreamy “Fantasy.” Whether the visionary soul men are tearing into the hardest of funk on “Jupiter” or the most sentimental of ballads on “I’ll Write a Song for You” (which boasts one of Philip Bailey’s many soaring, five-star performances), All ‘N All was a highly rewarding addition to EWF’s catalog. Because EWF had such a clean-cut image and fared so well among pop audiences, some may have forgotten just how sweaty its funk could be. But “Jupiter” — like “Mighty, Mighty,” “Shining Star,” and “Getaway” — underscores the fact that EWF delivered some of the most intense and gutsy funk of the 1970s.

With That’s the Way of the World having made Earth, Wind & Fire one of the best-selling soul bands of the 1970s, Maurice White and co. had no problem filling large arenas. As dynamic as EWF was on-stage, it’s a shame that there isn’t more documentation of the band’s live show. Only one live EWF album was released by a major label in America, the superb Gratitude. First a two-LP set and later reissued on CD, Gratitude brilliantly captures the excitement EWF generated on-stage at its creative peak. Neither hardcore EWF devotees nor more casual listeners should deprive themselves of the joys of the live versions of “Shining Star” and “Yearnin’ Learnin’.” Maurice White is magnificent throughout, and Philip Bailey truly soars on extended versions of “Reasons” (which boasts a memorable alto sax solo by guest Don Myrick) and “Devotion.” The album also introduced some excellent new studio songs, including the haunting “Can’t Hide Love” and the uplifting “Sing a Song.” One could nitpick and wish for live versions of “Evil,” “Keep Your Head to the Sky,” and “Kalimba Song,” but the bottom line is that Gratitude is one of EWF’s finest accomplishments.

This isn’t really a major archival release, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an enjoyable one, either. Capturing a series of highlights from Earth Wind & Fire’s breakthrough 1975 tour — all selected by Maurice White — That’s the Way of the World may not have the ebb and flow of a proper live set, but it does have the advantage of burning bright consistently throughout the record. This isn’t just because of White’s very selections, but because this is when EWF was at their peak as a white-hot funk band, laying down tight, monstrous grooves and turning out lively, interesting jams on top of that. All of that is captured well on this nine-track live album (not counting the “Overture” and “Interlude”); even when the group brings down the tempo on “Reasons” and “That’s the Way of the World,” the music doesn’t turn flaccid — it still smolders. This doesn’t quite mean it’s an earth-shattering release, but it’s a fun record, something that the group’s fans — particularly those who loved the group’s early peak years — will surely dig.

А 1975 cull film long out of print, That’s The Way Of The World starred a young Harvey Keitel as an impassioned record company executive caught up in the politics of race, power and ambition. Earth, Wind & Fire, cast as a hungry band of hopefuls, were the pawns in a ruthless game. The film may have faded but the group’s score was larger than life. Newly mastered with previously unreleased demos of “Shining Star,” “All About Love” and the original bossa nova version of “That’s The Way Of The World,” this meditation on the rules of living ranks as one of pop’s great masterworks. Simple Truths For The Ways Of The World.

Earth, Wind & Fire has delivered more than its share of excellent albums, but if a person could own only one EWF release, the logical choice would be That’s the Way of the World, which was the band’s best album as well as its best-selling. Open Our Eyes had been a major hit and sold over half a million units, but it was World that established EWF as major-league, multi-platinum superstars. Fueled by gems ranging from the sweaty funk of “Shining Star” and “Yearnin’ Learnin’” to the gorgeous ballad “Reasons” and the unforgettable title song, EWF’s sixth album sold at least five million units. And some of the tracks that weren’t major hits, such as the exuberant “Happy Feelin’” and the gospel-influenced “See the Light,” are equally powerful. There are no dull moments on World, one of the strongest albums of the 1970s and EWF’s crowning achievement.

In the blues world it’s OK to be a late bloomer, and when it came to recording, Joe Beard was exactly that. The charismatic singer/guitarist, whose influences range from Jimmy Reed to Lightnin’ Hopkins, worked “day gigs” when his kids were growing up and didn’t start to build a catalog until he was in his fifties. Blues lovers who heard Beard’s AudioQuest dates of the ’90s found themselves saying, “Hey, this guy is very talented; why haven’t I heard of him until now?” And, of course, the answer to that question is that his nine-to-fives and family life had kept him from being a full-time bluesman. But when his kids reached adulthood, the Mississippi native turned Rochester, NY, resident had more time to devote to music. Recorded in April 2000 (when he was 62), Dealin’ is Beard’s third CD for AudioQuest and underscores his ability to handle a variety of electric blues styles. Beard’s appreciation of Reed and the Chicago blues is evident on gutsy, rough-and-tumble tracks like “Give Me Up and Let Me Go,” “My Eyes Keep Me in Trouble,” and “The Bitter Seed,” a Jimmy Reed classic. Like Reed, Beard favors a gentle and laid-back style of singing but still has plenty of grit and doesn’t mind having a tough, hard-driving band behind him. Meanwhile, “Holding a Losing Hand” and “If I Get Lucky” (both Beard originals) go for the sort of moody, shadowy, haunting ambiance that often worked so well for Hopkins and John Lee Hooker. This isn’t to say that Beard is going out of his way to emulate Reed, Hopkins, Hooker, or anyone else. Dealin’ shows who some of his influences are, but it also reminds you that Beard is an appealing bluesman in his own right. –Alex Henderson, AllMusic

Blues veteran Joe Beard weaves an old-school spell on the aptly named Dealin’. Beard’s urgent, soulful vocal delivery and eccentric Delta-styled turns on electric guitar (most pronounced on his stirring, unaccompanied, Lightnin’ Hopkins-flavored originals “Holding a Losing Hand” and “If I Get Lucky”) speak loudly and eloquently of his Mississippi roots. Like other real-deal bluesmen, he possesses inherently all the things you just can’t teach in school or learn from instructional videos. Beard is capably supported here by a crew of talented and seasoned admirers in drummer Per Hanson, bassist Rod Carey, guitarist Duke Robillard, pianist-organist Bruce Katz and Muddy Waters alum Jerry Portnoy, who blows a mean blues harp on several tracks. Beard plays and sings with honesty and authority on down-home originals like “That ‘So-Called’ Friend of Mine” and “Three Day Love Affair,” along with covers of Willie Cobb’s “You Don’t Love Me Anymore,” Jimmy Reed’s “The Bitter Seed” and Pearl Wood’s “Just Like a Fish,” which carries the playful lines: “You know you got me hooked/and it sure feels great/It’s not the things you say/it’s what you use for bait.” From start to finish, Beard’s third recording for AudioQuest is a gem. –Bill Milkowski, JazzTimes

This has well-presented variations of old-style blues, from acoustic (“Dirty Groundhog”), to slow burners (“Elem”), to Chicago/Muddy Waters style (“Who’s Using Who”). Duke Robillard graciously acts in his role as a team player, although he stands out with a hip solo on “If That’s What Pleases Her.” Portney’s harp on “She’s Wonderful” is slow and easy, reminiscent of a hot summer’s day in the country.
