Genre: Jazz

This was one of the legendary tenor saxophonist’s final recording sessions before his death on November 5, 1996. Recorded in 1994 with a marvelous quartet, Freedom Jazz Dance is a portrait of a musical titan with his creative muse in full bloom. Eddie Harris and his tenor sax join together with Jacky Terrasson, piano; George Mraz, bass, and Billy Hart, drums, to compile an eight-track SACD full of jazz’s favorite staples as well as originals by quartet members. His immediately recognizable sound is beautifully showcased on this disc.

Eddie Harris’ final “authorized” studio date, like most in the last decade-and-a-half of his life, is a conservative acoustic blowing session, trying one last time to capture the minds and hearts of bop-minded purists. Frankly, he never sounded better on tenor than he does here, his tone luminous, the freak high notes perfectly integrated into his uniquely swinging style, his ballad phrasing infused with an even more poignant singing quality. He had a crack backup piano trio in tow, anchored by his old cohort Billy Hart on drums (who sounds freer than ever), with the emerging Jacky Terrasson on piano and George Mraz on bass. Yet the CD’s mainstream idiom is cautious in the extreme – “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho” à la Trane is about as adventurous as this quartet gets (and Harris was into that style when it was current) – and the only Harris original is the title tune, albeit superbly done. As a document of Eddie Harris in full bloom as a hard bopper, Freedom Jazz Dance is marvelous, but reveals only one side of this bewilderingly multi-faceted, innovative musician – and as such, it is an incomplete memorial

Genre: Jazz

One of the most beautiful Eddie Henderson albums we’ve heard in years – a richly modal session with lots of classic influences, recorded beautifully, and with a feel that will make it a real standout! The set list includes some killer jazz standards – like Wayne Shorter’s “Prince Of Darkness” and “Footprints”, Miles Davis’ “So What” and “All Blues”, and Monk’s “Well You Needn’t” and “Round Midnight” – not to mention great versions of “Green Dolphin Street”, and “Old Folks”. And even though the tunes are classics, they’re played with the fresh modernism of the mid 60s Miles Davis quintet – a style that’s got angular edges, but also some deeply soulful moments – played with elegance by a group that includes Bob Berg on tenor, Dave Kikoshi on piano, Ed Howard on bass, and Billy Hart and Victor Lewis on drums.

Eddie Henderson’s Columbia debut places him in the context of a classic series of modern compositions, from Wayne Shorter’s modal masterpiece “Prince Of Darkness,” and “Footprints,” to his read of his mentor Miles Davis’ “So What,” and “All Blues,” and, a pair of Monk numbers, as well “Round Midnight,” and “Well, You Needn’t.” The band assembled for this date is more than up to the challenge. Drummers Billy Hart and Victor Lewis, pianist Dave Kikoski, bassist Ed Howard, and the inimitable Bob Berg on tenor, accompany Henderson’s trumpet and flugelhorn with requisite heat and polish. Henderson’s arrangements work better on the more adventurous tunes: on the Shorter and Miles cuts, Henderson’s more aggressive and looser, allowing his band to stretch those tunes to the margins. His ultra-modernization of “On Green Dolphin Street,” sounds like he’s trying to update Miles’ particular read of the composition, rather than just take a new look at it for its own merit. He does likewise with “Someday My Prince Will Come,” and D.L. Hill’s “Old Folks.” He turns in stellar versions of the Monk tunes, with interesting and angular rhythmic turns in them along the changes. This is a solid date for Henderson, who doesn’t record nearly often enough.

Spectacular playing by Higgins accompanied and backed by Jay Leonhart on bass and Mark Taylor on drums. I will confess that my favorite drummer who was frequently a member of Higgins’ trios was Joe Ascione, but Taylor is perfect on this album. If you are a Higgins fan, then you are probably familiar with Leonhart who is almost telepathically connected to Higgins.

One of a handful of the very best piano jazz interpreters in the world, Eddie Higgins takes his place along side Beegie Adair, Dick Hyman, Oscar Peterson, John Proulx, Hank Jones, and maybe five or six other masters. Enrico Rava is a jazz trumpeter and arguably one of the best known Italian jazz musicians. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked with Pat Metheny, Michel Petrucciani, John Abercrombie, Joe Henderson, Richard Galliano, Miroslav Vitouš, Andrea Centazzo, Joe Lovano, Gil Evans and Cecil Taylor. He has also worked with Carla Bley, Lee Konitz, Jeanne Lee, Paul Motian, and Roswell Rudd. Chiefly an exponent of bebop jazz, Rava has also played in avant-garde jazz settings.

Enrico Rava is an Italian jazz trumpeter. He started on trombone, then changed to the trumpet after hearing Miles Davis. With trumpeter Paolo Fresu, Rava recorded four albums on the influence of Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Chet Baker, and Miles Davis. Also of note are his albums Rava, L’Opera Va’ and Carmen, which are his interpretations of operatic arias and overtures. In 2001, he founded a quintet with pianist Stefano Bollani and toured with Gato Barbieri and Aldo Romano. In the trio Europeans, he worked with Eberhard Weber and Swiss percussionist Reto Weber. In June 2005, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music from Berklee College of Music at the twentieth anniversary of jazz education at the Umbria Jazz Festival, in Perugia, Italy.

Eric Alexander has had many opportunities to record as a leader for several different labels, though producer Tetsuo Hara, owner of the Japanese label Venus, has become a huge fan, recording him almost any time he travels to New York City. This is another superb outing by Eric Alexander on a freewheeling trio to compile a nine-track full of jazz’s favorite staples from John Coltrane, Cole Porter and many more! There’s a new sort of edge in Eric’s horn, sided with the sublime work of Dezron Douglas on bass and Neal Smith on drums, which he displays throughout the set with a new great sense of spirituality. Well recommended!

Here we have a team; Shorty with his prodigious talents was the perfect centerpiece, Otis Grand with his guitar playing and production and band leading skills is simply beyond ‘world class’. Add a superb band and a really good studio and you’re in business. The album won a Handy Award. Further JSP collaborations with Otis Grand followed, resulting in stone classic albums with Phillip Walker, Joe Louis Walker and Joe Houston.

Until he joined forces with British guitarist Otis Grand’s band and waxed this very credible comeback set, David “Guitar Shorty” Kearney’s legacy was largely limited to a solitary single for Cobra and a handful of great but legendarily obscure followups for Los Angeles-based Pull Records during the late ’50s. The acrobatic guitarist informed everyone he was alive and lively with this one, exhibiting his Guitar Slim roots on “Down Thru the Years” and slashing with a vengeance on “No Educated Woman” and the title cut (but shouldn’t it have read “or the highway?”).

Harold Mabern is a hard bop, post-bop and soul jazz pianist and composer. He is described in The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings as “one of the great post-bop pianists”. This album has been released on the Japanese VENUS label.

Harold Mabern is one of many American jazz artists who have found a lucrative market for their recordings in Japan. This solo piano date is one of his very best efforts, opening with a hard-driving take of Bobby Timmons’ hard bop masterpiece “Dat Dere,” then following it with a thoughtful rendition George Shearing’s unjustly obscure ballad “She.” The pianist’s breezy hard bop treatment of “You Don’t Know What Love Is” makes one forget that it began life as a bittersweet ballad. Mabern’s upbeat performance of Quincy Jones’ “Wail Bait” provokes memories of Bud Powell when he was healthy. Erroll Garner’s “Misty” has long been one of the most requested tunes in night club settings, though Mabern’s percussive setting is quite different from the usual low-key approach. Mabern also includes a pair of originals, including his brisk “Mabern’s Boogie, which would have been right at home during the genre’s heyday, along with his dazzling, hard-charging “Wayne’s Blues.”

Though he passed from cancer in 2008 at the young age of 52, jazz and rock guitarist Hiram Bullock lives on in the music he left behind. A music lover from the start, he played saxophone and bass guitar before claiming his place as a guitarist at the age of 16. He went on to appear on several albums with saxophonist David Sanborn, as well as other artists’ session for record producer Phil Ramone. Mr. Bullock later started the 24th Street Band and the group made three albums. The 24th Street Band made several appearances on “Late Night With David Letterman” whenever Letterman’s keyboardist Paul Shaffer needed a band. Shaffer dubbed them The World’s Most Dangerous Band while Mr. Bullock, himself, earned the nickname “The Barefoot Guitarist”. Those joining Mr. Bullock for the Late Night Talk album include organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, Joe Locke on electric and acoustic vibs, acoustic bassist Ed Howard and Idris Muhammad on drums.

Hiram Bullock claimed that he had never done a “jazz” album before this – which is a debatable proposition depending upon how limiting your definition of jazz is. What counts is that he has come up with a beautiful album, drenched in soul-jazz yet touching upon popular music genres as well. Bullock didn’t have to change much, utilizing his subdued and rock-tinged guitar styles at will, occasionally bursting out in full rock regalia and making tasty use of electronic additives. Bullock has also written some fairly interesting songs – music and lyrics – singing them in a somewhat lusterless voice. There is a nice, literal, mellow cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Creepin’,” which is finally emerging as one of Stevie’s most striking masterpieces of the ’70s, as well as a jaunty cover of Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar.” His somewhat depoliticized take on David Crosby’s “Long Time Gone” is quite moving, with its reharmonized vamp and atmospheric organ washes. Two-thirds of the rhythm section comes from the heart of ’60s soul-jazz, Dr. Lonnie Smith on Hammond B-3 organ and Idris Muhammad on drums, and Joe Locke contributes a good deal of the jazz flavor on vibes (Ed Howard is on bass). Though made for the Japanese market, this Venus album can be found in good import bins in large U.S. cities.

Genre: Rock

People, Hell & Angels is a new album of twelve never before released Jimi Hendrix studio recordings. This special album showcases the legendary guitarist working outside of the original Jimi Hendrix Experience trio. Beginning in 1968, Jimi Hendrix grew restless, eager to develop new material with old friends and new ensembles. Outside the view of a massive audience that had established the Experience as rock’s largest grossing concert act and simultaneously placed two of his albums together in the US Top 10 sales chart, Jimi was busy working behind the scenes to craft his next musical statement.

People, Hell and Angels is a collection of quality studio tracks recorded (mostly) in 1968-1969 as the Experience was coming to an end and Jimi was renewing his friendships with Billy Cox and Buddy Miles, who appear here as sidemen on most of these tracks. The surprising thing about this set is not the sound quality (which is exceptional) or that these all sound like finished tracks, but the fact that even avid Hendrix bootleg collectors are unlikely to have heard most of this material.
A great version of “Earth Blues” kicks things off with just Jimi, Billy, and Buddy (whose drums were replaced by Mitch Mitchell on the Rainbow Bridge/First Rays version). It’s a more forceful take than the other version and also has some different lyrics. “Somewhere” is also a different take than the one used for Crash Landing and, of course, contains the original rhythm section and not the egregious overdubs of Crash Landing. “Hear My Train A Comin'” and “Bleeding Heart” are both taken from Jimi’s first session with Billy and Buddy from May of 1969. In the film Jimi Hendrix, “Hear My Train” is played slow on a 12-string acoustic and sung so sadly that you can actually see a tear on Jimi’s face as he sings. This version is not only electric and taken at a faster pace than normal, but it’s an angry song, this time with a killer solo. “Bleeding Heart” is nice and raw and has a VERY different arrangement than he ever performed live. “Let Me Move You” was recorded with saxman Lonnie Youngblood, who released a couple singles with a pre-Experience Jimi Hendrix on guitar. It’s nothing more than an old-school soul jam except the guitar is way more out front. It’s a decent track, but doesn’t really fit in with the sound of the rest of the album. “Izabella” and “Easy Blues” are rare studio recordings by the Woodstock band (Jimi, Billy, and Mitch Mitchell with Larry Lee on second guitar and Jerry Velez and Juma Sultan on percussion). This version of “Izabella” is now the earliest known recording of the song, while “Easy Blues” is actually a nice jazzy instrumental (previously released in edited form on Nine to the Universe).
This version of “Crash Landing” has Jimi and Billy with what is essentially a pickup band. It sounds more like a work in progress than anything else on the set and contains many elements of what would become “Dolly Dagger.” “Inside Out” may have been heard by hardcore collectors, but not in this quality. It was originally cut with just Jimi on guitar and Mitch Mitchell on drums, then Jimi added bass and a guitar overdub through a Leslie. It’s a great tune and it’s always exciting to hear Jimi’s bass playing as well. “Hey Gypsy Boy” is very closely related to “Hey Baby,” and may have been an early version. On this cut, Jimi’s whammy bar work is quite interesting and not his standard dive-bomb approach. “Mojo Man” was actually a Ghetto Fighters tune, recorded at Muscle Shoals. Jimi laid down a couple guitar tracks on top of the existing mix for this track. Kudos to Eddie Kramer for grafting guitar parts on to a fully mixed tune and making it sound great (he really did a spectacular job on this entire set). It’s a hot tune with nice syncopated horns, improved by Jimi’s addition. The album closes with a brief studio take on “Villanova Junction Blues.” People, Hell and Angels certainly isn’t the place to start your Hendrix collection, but collectors will surely want to hear this and it provides an interesting perspective on where Jimi’s music was headed post-Experience.

Joe Beck began his career as a highly sought-after studio guitarist in the early 70s. His clean jazz playing on electric guitar was his hallmark. His discography is well-worthy searching for. He was well-respected and played with artists such as John Abercrombie, Jimmy Bruno, Gill Evans, Don Sebesky, Bobby TImmons, and Paul Simon. This recording was made for Japanese Venus label. Relaxed samba/bossa nova is the emphasis here, with selections from Antonio Carlos Jobim, primarily.

Joe Beck has had a long career, though he remains an artist deserving of wider recognition. These 2005 sessions are a relaxing affair that will delight fans of Brazilian jazz. Joined by bassist Ira Coleman and drummer Thierry Arpino (who is known for his work with violinist Jean-Luc Ponty), Beck’s fluid electric guitar (while sometimes overdubbing an acoustic rhythm line) makes the most of each selection, playing a heavy dose of popular tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim and his own tasty originals. Highlights among the Jobim compositions include the bittersweet “O Grande Amor” and the easygoing “Felicidade.” Harmonica player Gregoire Maret is added for the leader’s gentle bossa nova “And Here’s to You” and Jobim’s bittersweet “Falando De Amor.” Beck also offers an inventive samba arrangement of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” that adds a few twists while played at a slower-than-typical tempo, so it sneaks up on the listener. Highly recommended!

Joel Frahm is New York-based saxophonist and recording artist. This album features “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes”, “Early Autumn” and other love songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bossa Nova’s famous songs romantically and sentimentally tells jazz’s attractive tenor saxophone.

Wisconsin-born Joel Frahm practiced piano and bassoon in his youth, but in grade 8, chose tenor saxophone as his principal horn. He went on to play in the high school jazz band, later publically performing with quartet formed by one of those bandmates. He formally studied music in New York.

Pianist Cyrus Chestnut began playing at his church at age 6 and by age 9 was studying classical music at the Peabody Institute. Since age 30, he has spawned several albums and has performed alongside the likes of Vanessa Williams and Brian McKnight.

Bassist Dezron Douglas, born in Connecticut, didn’t start out as a jazz fan, relishing in the lyrics and tunes of R&B stars, including Stevie Wonder and Diana Ross. It was in college that he decided to harness his loyalty to rhythm and blues and combine it with the smooth moves of jazz to create a style all his own. He is now a music teacher.

Rio de Janeiro-born Drummer Duduka Da Fonseca has been playing drums since he was 12, and by age 15 was performing with some of the most experienced musicians in Brazil. In 1975, Mr. Da Fonseca moved to New York where his career flourished playing in various ensembles and conducting workshops in Japan and Europe. He is also the author of the instructional book and tape set Brazilian Rhythms for Drumset.

John Di Martino, composer, arranger, pianist, has recorded many CD’s for Venus Records with his “Romantic Jazz Trio”. Noted for his versatility, John has performed and recorded with such notables as Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Joe Lovano, David “Fat Head” Newman, Pat Martino, Paquito D’Rivera and Houston Person.

Of the 70 published Monk compositions, two dozen or so are performed more often than the rest. With that thought in mind, it is more difficult for a pianist to break new ground on a record date, though Di Martino has a few twists in store. Monk’s “Epistrophy” alternates between an intense staccato attack and a straight-ahead bop groove. “‘Round Midnight” is easily Monk’s best-known work; Di Martino doesn’t overly attempt to stretch the boundaries of its theme, but improvises thoughtfully while maintaining the essence of its haunting melody. The fun romp through “Well, You Needn’t” contrasts with the relaxed setting of “Eronel.” Di Martino’s lyrical title track is a tribute to Monk and (presumably) Japanese novelist Haruki Murakami, an enjoyable piece that doesn’t attempt to mimic Monk’s writing style.
