In some ways, A Swingin’ Affair! is “Songs for Swingin’ Lovers!, Pt. 2,” following the same formula of Sinatra’s hit album of the previous year. Beneath the surface, there are enough variations on A Swingin’ Affair! to make it a distinctive, and equally enjoyable listen. The most noticeable difference between the two records is their basic approach. Where Songs for Swingin’ Lovers! swung hard but managed to stay rather light, A Swingin’ Affair! is a forceful, brassy album — it exudes a self-assured, confident aura. It is a hard, jazzy album. However, the attack is more brash.

At the time he recorded his final Capitol album, Point of No Return, Frank Sinatra was no longer interested in giving his record label first-rate material, preferring to save that for his new label, Reprise. However, someone persuaded the singer to make the album a special occasion by reuniting with Axel Stordahl, the arranger/conductor who helped Sinatra rise to stardom in the ’40s; he also arranged the vocalist’s first Capitol session, so his presence gave a nice sense of closure to the Capitol era. Even though the Voice gave a more heartfelt, dedicated performance than expected, the project was rushed along, necessitating the use of a ghost-arranger, Heine Beau, for several tracks. Point of No Return remains a touching farewell, consisting of moving renditions of standards like “September Song,” “There Will Never Be Another You,” “I’ll Remember April,” and “These Foolish Things,” with only three charts being replications of their previous work (“I’ll Be Seeing You,” “September Song,” “These Foolish Things”). Sinatra would never sing these standards with such detailed, ornate orchestrations, and, as such, the album has a feeling of an elegy.

Following the hard-driving A Swingin’ Affair, Frank Sinatra released another all-ballads record, Where Are You? The album was the first he recorded at Capitol without Nelson Riddle, as well as the first he recorded in stereo. Where Riddle’s down beat albums are stately and sullen, Jenkins favors lush, melancholy arrangements played by large, string-dominated orchestras. Jenkins’ arrangements suggested classical textures, although the tempos alluded to Billie Holiday’s ballad style. Where Are You? primarily consists of torch songs, including “The Night We Called It a Day,” “I Cover the Waterfront,” and “Lonely Town.” Throughout the record, Sinatra blends with Jenkins’ sumptuous strings, making his voice sound rich, relaxed and regretful. It doesn’t have the stark despair of In the Wee Small Hours, but its luxurious sadness makes Where Are You? a majestic experience of its own.

Sinatra’s Swingin’ Session!!! And More is a fast, driving album, the speediest and hardest swing collection Frank Sinatra ever recorded. The majority of the album is a re-recording of six of the eight songs from his first LP, Sing and Dance with Frank Sinatra, as rearranged by Nelson Riddle. Sinatra performed the songs twice as fast as was expected; consequently, it’s one of his jazziest swing sets, with the musicians spitting out energetic, forceful solos and providing tough, gutsy support. Not only do the uptempo numbers speed by, the ballads are sprightly. It doesn’t have the brassy verve of A Swingin’ Affair, but Sinatra’s Swingin’ Session!!! does have a confident, swaggering flavor of its own that makes it nearly as enjoyable.

Frank Sinatra’s second set of torch songs recorded with Gordon Jenkins, No One Cares was nearly as good as its predecessor, Where Are You? Expanding the melancholy tone of the duo’s previous collaboration, No One Cares consists of nothing but brooding, lonely songs. Jenkins gives the songs a subtley tragic treatment, and Sinatra responds with a wrenching performance. It lacks the grandiose melancholy of Only the Lonely, nor is it as lsuh as Where Are You?, but in its slow, bluesly tempos and heartbreaking little flourishes, it is every bit moving.

Sometimes memories distort or inflate the quality of recordings deemed legendary, but in the case of Dusty in Memphis, the years have only strengthened its reputation. The idea of taking England’s reigning female soul queen to the home of the music she had mastered was an inspired one. The Jerry Wexler/Tom Dowd/Arif Mardin production and engineering team picked mostly perfect songs, and those that weren’t so great were salvaged by Springfield’s marvelous delivery and technique. This set has definitive numbers in “So Much Love,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Breakfast in Bed,” “Just One Smile,” “I Don’t Want to Hear About It Anymore,” and “Just a Little Lovin’” and three bonus tracks: an unreleased version of “What Do You Do When Love Dies,” “Willie & Laura Mae Jones” and “That Old Sweet Roll (Hi-De-Ho).” It’s truly a disc deserving of its classic status.

Ken Peplowski has long shown interest in a number of different jazz styles, but this album is his first strictly Gypsy swing session. Recruiting two of the most versatile guitarists for the date, Bucky Pizzarelli and Howard Alden, veterans Frank Tate on bass and Chuck Redd on drums, and the promising young violinist Aaron Weinstein (on selected tracks), Peplowski alternates between tenor sax and clarinet, covering a set list that is mostly drawn from the Quintet of the Hot Club of France and postwar Django Reinhardt records. The reed player showcases both instruments in his delightful take of “Please,” overlapping them in spots via overdubbing. Peplowski takes a back seat to the two guitarists in “Nuages,” with Pizzarelli taking the opening solo (easily identified by anyone who has heard him play this standard in person) and Alden following the leader’s feature. Weinstein takes part in the chugging “Minor Swing,” sounding very mature for his tender years. “Anouman” is one of Reinhardt’s gems from near the end of his life; surprisingly, it is infrequently performed. Peplowski’s lyrical, spacious clarinet is a highlight of this moving rendition.

While well known amongst serious jazz fans in the U.S., the talented Ken Peplowski had been relatively unknown in Japan, until Tetsuo Hara of Venus Records introduced him with the smash hit “Memories of You” in 2006. It received not only the Gold Disc recognition, but was also awarded the Best Engineered Album in 2006 by Swing Journal. Its audiophile credentials were further enhanced when Jazz Critique Magazine chose it as the Third Best Sounding Jazz Disc of 2006.

Ken Peplowski has recorded approximately 50 CDs as a soloist, and close to 400 as a sideman – some of the artists he’s performed/recorded with include Charlie Byrd, Mel Torme, Rosemary Clooney, Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops, Hank Jones, Peggy Lee, Bill Charlap, Woody Allen, Benny Goodman, and Madonna. He travels at least half of every year, playing clubs, concert halls, colleges, and pops concerts. He has headlined the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, the Blue Note, and Dizzy’s Club amongst many other venues. In 2014, Ken was the recipient of the Sarasota Jazz Festival’s “Satchmo” award, given to him for his “unique and enduring contribution to the living history of jazz”; in March, Ken was also given a “Highlights In Jazz” concert in NYC honoring him for “his matchless musical achievements”.

Ken Peplowski is among the top clarinetists and tenor saxophonists of his generation. After a long, fruitful period recording as a leader for Concord, Peplowski started getting a number of offers to record for overseas labels. He alternates between the two instruments during these 2006 sessions, well accompanied by pianist Ted Rosenthal, bassist Gary Mazzaroppi (long Marian McPartland’s bassist of choice), and drummer Jeff Brillinger, all veterans like the leader. Peplowski’s lush tenor in the first interpretation of “Memories of You” recalls Ben Webster with his soft, breathy vibrato and lyrical style. He also caresses Roland Kirk’s infrequently heard ballad “Bright Moments” and renders an elegant “Dream Dancing” as well. On clarinet, Peplowski’s magical treatment of “In a Sentimental Mood” (backed solely by bass at first) suggests a bird’s song.

He was a great actor, but the Ken Peplows Quartet thought Charlie Chaplin made a pretty decent song composer too, making Track 3 on Memories Of You Vol. 2 a rendition of “Smile,” of which the lyrics tell the listener to cheer up and that there is always a bright tomorrow, just as long as they smile. Chaplin isn’t the only musician honored on Vol. 2. George Gershwin, Michel Legrend, Eubie Blake and Raymond Hubbell are too recognized, hand-picked by the Quartet to pay tribute to in the remainder of the album’s tracks. The cream of the crop is his warm interpretation of Billy Strayhorn’s “Lotus Blossom”. This set is perfect for late-night listening.

Jazz pianist Kenny Werner has consistently delivered outstanding results on his many record dates as a leader, yet he often seems like he is still a talent deserving of wider recognition after decades on the jazz scene. This trio session for the Japanese label Venus features the pianist with bassist Johannes Weidenmüller and drummer Ari Hoenig, two outstanding players who are a good bit younger than the leader. It is hard not to detect the influence of Bill Evans upon Werner in spots, especially in his lyrical touch, though he is far more than an Evans clone. “Everything Must Change” is the second album of female vocalist, who got a reputation as a rebirth of Billy Holiday. While getting hot attention, the second album appeared as soon as possible. Sweet singing voice with transparent feeling, candy melts. Moist and gentle voices like wrapping around with velvet. Elements that fascinated the people with the first one can spread further. Unlike the previous full-length standard song, popular songs such as Benard Aigner’s masterpiece “Everything Mast Change”, also a title song, “A Song Song For You” famous for Carpenters, are also included. For interpretation of standard songs, especially ballads, fans of previous work will also be glad to shake the major players.

Debut work of Lady Kim, released in Japan via Eighty-Eight’s, sublabel of Village Records. A whispering ballad with a voice that seems to have a deep sadness reminiscent of Billy Holiday. Up-tempo songs filled with coquettish charm are just overflowing. Originality-rich vocal style makes the most of her charm. This album is mainly made up of songs that Billy Holiday did not take up (the only exception is bonus track “Strange Fruit” only recorded as homage).

Known for her personalized renditions of pop and jazz standards, jazz chanteuse Laird Jackson has also written her own music on top of her renowned covers. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Jackson grew up near Detroit and stayed in Michigan until she graduated from college. After that, she moved to New York City and started working on the club scene. Developing a reputation in the area for her fiery live shows, she recorded Quiet Flame in 1994 and released it the same year. Blending covers of 30’s and 40’s jazz standards with her own compositions, Jackson drew attention to herself with the record and hit the European jazz scene for a short period while promoting it. After that, she took the next eight years to put together another album, continuing to play live while taking care of personal projects at home. Ready to record again in the spring of 2002, the singer put together Touched out of several self-penned tracks as well as covers of Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, and many others.

Lee Konitz has long been a versatile jazz musician, adaptable to many different styles. This Brazilian-flavored session is one of two that the alto saxophonist recorded during the mid-’90s for Venus; his session partners include trumpeter Tom Harrell, guitarist Romero Lubambo, pianist David Kikoski (who mostly sticks to electric piano), bassist David Fink, drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, and percussionist Waltinho Anastácio. As expected, Konitz’s light sound works well with the Brazilian favorites they perform, with Harrell being a particularly inspired foil for the leader. The works of Antonio Carlos Jobim are well represented, including breezy takes of “Favela” and “Wave.” Harrell’s lyrical “September” (featuring him in a fine muted solo) and Konitz’s “Brazilian Serenade” also fit the mood of this relaxing album very well. This rewarding release is well worth investigating.

Lee Konitz has so frequently avoided “ordinary” jazz situations that it’s actually a rare treat to hear him do an album like this, with a roster of jazz standards performed by a straightahead American rhythm section–the great Kenny Barron on piano, James Genus on bass & Kenny Washington on drums.

Although never a poll winner, altoist Lee Konitz has had a more productive and consistently stimulating career than most of his contemporaries, never afraid to improvise fairly freely in his relaxed style. For this Evidence CD, Konitz digs into seven standards with an impressive rhythm section (pianist Kenny Barron, bassist James Genus and drummer Kenny Washington) and constantly comes up with interesting ideas and new twists. There are no phony disguises of familiar tunes with new titles on this date; just creative blowing. Konitz uplifts such often-overplayed material as “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” “Misty,” “Alone Together,” “Body and Soul” and “My Funny Valentine” without ever becoming predictable; Kenny Barron is in excellent form, too. This album is recommended as a strong example of Lee Konitz’s playing in the ’90s.

Marlena Shaw is a jazz singer who just never gets her commercial rewards. Her delivery is musically unique, emotionally engaging and quite oftne humorous. She’s a true jazz singer and this live set captures most of it.

There are vocalists who can sing well, and swing too; and then there are seasoned professionals who master any material, making each song sound like a fresh thought and an intimate conversation. Marlena Shaw, who began with Count Basie and still works steadily and internationally all through the year, has each of these elements, plus a stage presence that manages to be both electrifying and endearing. This live release, recorded at Tokyo’s B Flat club in June 2002, and reissued about a year later by 441 Records, supplies a taste of Shaw’s warm, easy rapport with her audience, and their delighted response. What is fully documented is her splendid voice and range, and her relaxed, personal delivery of the material. Here it moves from her own, finger-snapping “Ooh Wee – You’re the One for Me,” to a slow-burning rendition of “What a Difference a Day Makes.” Shaw recalls her Basie days with “Until I Met You,” aka “Corner Pocket,” and heats up both “Round Midnight” and “Feel Like Makin’ Love,” which was a hit for Roberta Flack in a more subdued version. Whether interpreting jazz classics or pop tunes, Shaw puts her signature on each track, inviting the listener in with her direct, earthy approach, and her unique lyrical improvisations that enhance the meaning of each song. This CD is strong, honest, tuneful, and recommended.

Singer Mel Tormé and pianist George Shearing make a perfect team, bringing out the best in each other. With the assistance of bassist John Leitham and drummer Donny Osborne, the swinging, witty duo performs a variety of standards, including Noël Coward’s “Someday I’ll Find You”, “The Way You Look Tonight”, and “Anyone Can Whistle”, and a couple of medleys highlighted by a humorous six-song “New York, New York Medley”. All of the Tormé/Shearing collaborations are quite enjoyable and highly recommended as some of their best work of the 1980s.

Velvet-toned vocalist Mel Tormé and elegantly swinging pianist George Shearing were, quite simply, an unrivaled pairing of talents. And 1987—the year in which this timeless, Grammy®-Award nominated recording was made—was indeed A Vintage Year for this dynamic duo, finding both gentlemen at the peak of their creative and artistic powers. Consummate entertainers, Mel Torme and George Shearing possessed a collective wit and sense of humor that perfectly matched their peerless musical virtuosity and artistry. Their humorous, now-famous “New York, New York Medley” is a classic example of their signature melding of talents—one of many highlights in this masterful Torme/Shearing outing. Now on Hybrid SACD, you’re invited to pull up a front row seat at the Paul Masson Winery, and witness first-hand the undeniable fact that, like a fine bottle of wine, this vintage recording only gets better with age.

Veteran pianist Monty Alexander left Jamaica and came to the United States at age 17. This recording for Venus Records celebrates his 50 years in the land of jazz. Known for his straight ahead sensibilities and sometimes considered a successor of Oscar Peterson, his long career has widened his musical spectrum and brought maturity to his playing. For this recording, Monty is accompanied by bassist Hassan Shakur and drummer Willie Jones III on original songs like “Can’t You See”, “Got To Go” and “Sweet Lady”, as well as popular tunes such as “Come Fly With Me”, “I’ve Never Been In Love Before”, You Call It Madness” and “We’ve Only Just Begun”, plus the title song.

Soulful, swinging, funky and decidedly straight ahead, Alexander’s maturity brought a certain richness and relaxed elegance to his playing. With his trusted rhythm section, he plays standards and a couple of his originals, plus a few of Ray Brown’s (his mentor and early collaborator) repertory. This is one of his strongest albums in recent years!

DSF Stereo DSD64/2.82MHz  | Time – 01:05:23 minutes | 2,58 GB | Genre: Classical
Source: ISO SACD | © Channel Classics Records
Recorded: October 2012, St John’s the Evangelist Church, Upper Norwood, London

For two soloists chose themselves – so-called ‘Bach Double’ (a.k.a. the famous Concerto for TwoViolins in D minor) and the work for violin and oboe. Of course, the universal appeal of the former is unsurpassed with its timelessly beautiful middle movement of exquisite conversations between the two violins, framed by vigorous outer movements. In fact, this piece is a concerto for6 parts, as he himself stated on the manuscript title page ‘Concerto a Sei’ – all parts playing a crucial part in the colour and richness of the ensemble.
Performing these pieces with just single players on each part rather than an orchestra makes the roles of each particularly pronounced and clear, all of us ‘concerto-ing’, not just the conventional ‘soloists’.The other double concerto on this recording has a darker, broader and more dramatic landscape. The contemplative slow movement is the best answer to the question ‘what can I listen to after such a long day’s work?’, its gentle swing and beautiful mellifluous lines soothing any aches and pains. The last movement feels like a gutsy earth-bound ‘clog dance’ full of reels and japes.
The Triple Concerto in A minor is in a world of its own: it’s really a harpsichord concerto to which the colours of the flute and violin are sprinkled – the same scoring as in Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no 5. Written about fifteen years after the Brandenburg, Bach adapted the outer movements of the Triple from his Prelude and Fugue, bwv 894, and the slow movement comes from the Organ Trio Sonata, bwv 527. It’s a brilliantly written piece for the harpsichord showing off many novel keyboard tricks with rapid figurations and interesting and engaging ripeno parts.
As we know, recycling his own works and adapting them for different purposes and contexts was a common practice for Bach, and it is widely known that his harpsichord concertos all found their musical voice, initially, in versions for other instruments, especially the violin. Such is the case with both these double concertos; for the violin and oboe concerto the only extant source is the two-harpsichord score from the composer’s Collegium Musicum concert series in the 1730s.The scoring of violin and oboe is speculative, albeit rather more than a guess. The Concerto for Three Harpsichords in C major is also believed to have been conceived originally as a Triple Violin Concerto in D major. It’s a treat to play: the richly interweaving lines of the solo instruments providing intensity and exhilaration, whether in conversation or competition. The solo passages take your breath away within the realms of virtuosic writing.Knowing Bach’s writing for violin we can understand his fondness for the instrument, not least the care in exceptional craftsmanship of idiomatic writing for it. It goes well beyond any other baroque composer.
