Starting in the late ’50s, Gerry Mulligan recorded a series of encounters with fellow saxophonists that included such immortals as Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster. In 1986 he resumed the practice for this one date on which his baritone is matched with the tenor of the young great Scott Hamilton. The music, which includes warm ballads and fairly hot romps (five of the seven songs are Mulligan originals), consistently swing and are quite enjoyable.

The follow-up to the breakthrough Headhunters album was virtually as good as its wildly successful predecessor: an earthy, funky, yet often harmonically and rhythmically sophisticated tour de force. There is only one change in the Headhunters lineup – swapping drummer Harvey Mason for Mike Clark – and the switch results in grooves that are even more complex. Hancock continues to reach into the rapidly changing high-tech world for new sounds, most notably the metallic sheen of the then-new ARP string synthesizer which was already becoming a staple item on pop and jazz-rock records. Again, there are only four long tracks, three of which (“Palm Grease,” “Actual Proof,” “Spank-A-Lee”) concentrate on the funk, with plenty of Hancock’s wah-wah clavinet, synthesizer textures and effects, and electric piano ruminations that still venture beyond the outer limits of post-bop. The change-of-pace is one of Hancock’s loveliest electric pieces, “Butterfly,” a match for any tune he’s written before or since, with shimmering synth textures and Bennie Maupin soaring on soprano (Hancock would re-record it 20 years later on Dis Is Da Drum, but this is the one to hear). This supertight jazz-funk quintet album still sounds invigorating a quarter of a century later.

A native of Boulder, Colorado Janet Feder is most widely known for pioneering composition for prepared guitar. She has been featured on numerous recordings, radio programs, and film scores. Deeply layered, textured and intimate, “Songs With Words”, features Janet Feder’s prepared guitar compositions accompanying her voice.

Innovative guitarist Janet Feder draws her own sonic territory on this first collection of original songs. The Colorado-based guitarist is known for her extended techniques on the prepared guitar, and her work was first introduced to the wider public on the like-minded collection of innovative guitarists I Never Meta Guitar—Solo Guitars for the XXI Century) (Clean Feed, 2010). Prior to that, she recorded with close conspirators such as Fred Frith on Ironic Universe.
Songs with Words was a project initiated by producer Joe Shepard, who encouraged Feder to use his studio. At first, she envisioned writing songs for others to sing, but since Shepard wanted to record within two weeks, Feder ended up singing the songs herself and playing all the guitar parts. Her usage of small metal objects that alter the sound of the acoustic guitar strings enable her to explore new tunings and an expanded sonic palette. Her singing is innocent and unassuming, focused on the topics of the songs, most of them inspired by the political, anti-war folk songs of the sixties. But unlike other folk songs, Feder’s guitar playing and vocal delivery are not rooted in any familiar folk tradition.
All the songs were recorded live, without any digital effects; just Feder, her guitar—surrounded by 15 microphones—and occasional guests. The songs have a clear structure: strong melodic themes, verses and choruses, but they still all sound mysterious, demanding repeated listening before allowing themselves to be deciphered fully. She recited her pleas for a more compassionate world in a reserved, fragile voice, even when she wishes that “soldiers will refuse to fight” on “My Blackest Crow.” Her range sounds clearer on the instrumental “A Thousand Million Petty Tyrants.” Her cover of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind” sounds as if she already knows that its call for action is not enough. The somber, melancholic beauty of the personal “Plan to Live” brings to mind the songs of Nick Drake. “Ocean Wall” is a silent sonic poem that imagines a peaceful scenery. Songs with Words is a unique, haunting gem.

“This performance remains one of the most thrilling and committed performances of “The Titan” to be issued. The DSD/SACD remastering is excellent I look forward to the entire Sony cycle in this wonderful high resolution format.”

“I must say, the SACD remaster iis absolutely sublime. The Symphony No. 1 comes across as fresh and exciting, the intonation of the New York Philharmonic is world class. Mahler’s 1st has many colors and offers moments of breathtaking beauty and mystery. From it’s almost Pastoral opening, through the effervescent Scherzo and into the darker recesses of the last movements, it is a late 19th century jewel. The music, as conducted by Bernstein, is particularly alive and engaging. A must-have, offering an incredible performance that captures a great Mahlerian conductor and a superb orchestra. A highly recommended purchase!”

“Astonishing sound quality. I wish all producers and engineers would listen to masters like this and apply the miraculous remastering that they did to the previous release’s imaging and SQ. This is a great recording that will show you exactly how good your system is!

“This release, incorporating both multi-channel and 2-channel SACD playback is simply amazing for the amount of orchestral detail revealed in the original 60s recording. The multi-channel playback took a bit to get used to if one has grown up with the stereo version, but it was as if I were listening to this interpretation for the very first time. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED if you must have the very best playback capability for this Bernstein recording. Get it before it disappears!

“The recording finds Bernstein in good musical shape and the summit of his maturity. Besides the New York Philharmonic with his accustomed excellence (these horns and winds!) joined efforts and recorded the whole cycle of Mahler’s symphonies.

“If the Mahler 5th is one of your favorite classical works, this disc is a winner and I would recommend it without qualification. I urge you strongly to give it a try, provided your wallet can stand it.” – SACD Review

Wynton Marsalis, very much in his Miles Davis period, plays quite melodically throughout this ballad-dominated outing with strings. Branford Marsalis (on tenor and soprano), flutist Kent Jordan, pianist Kenny Kirkland, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Jeff Watts are strong assets but it is Wynton’s subtle creativity on such songs as “Stardust,” “When You Wish Upon a Star,” Duke Ellington’s “Melancholia,” and “I’m Confessin'” that makes this recording special. The arrangements by Robert Freedman generally keep the strings from sounding too sticky and Wynton’s tone is consistently beautiful.

When, at the end of the 18th century in Germany, they talked of the “great Bach”, it was usually not Johann Sebastian they had in mind, who was admired at the time by just a few connoisseurs, but his second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel in whose powerful talent Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven delighted and whose influence extended even to the early romantics: Weber, Hoffmann, Mendelssohn.

C.P.E. Bach, the second son of J.S., was better known than his father at the end of the 18th century in Germany. His over 1000 compositions including 50 keyboard concertos and many works featuring the oboe – which was considered by many the favorite musical instrument of the time. These four works with the oboe demonstrate the lighter, more melody-focused music of C.P.E. compared to the denser, more contrapuntal writing of his father. Greater emotional expression is another feature of Emanuel’s style – sometimes rising to seriously stormy levels. Only the Trio Sonata has four movements, the rest are in three. Utkin is a superb oboist and the performances are captured with an impeccable clarity and natural surround immersion. This is by the way still another fine Russian hi-res recording project, as are the Water Lily and the historic Mercury Living Presence reissues dating from the 60s. ~~ Reviews by John Sunier “Audiophile Audition”

A largely forgotten album in the wake of Sarah McLachlan’s mainstream success, Touch was the first album anyone heard from the singer. Only 19 at the time, McLachlan had years to go before she would become the seductive songstress of Fumbling Towards Ecstacy or the sensitive balladeer of Surfacing. Instead, she has more of an ethereal sound, enhanced by keyboards and a lush production that gives it a polished feel. Bringing to mind the ’80s incarnations of both Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush, the songs here are moody pop tracks that showcase her incredible range more than anything else. A few tracks, especially “Vox” and “Steaming,” are beautiful tracks that have a light sense of yearning that she would later develop into the sensual crooning of her mid-’90s work. And “Ben’s Song,” a piano ballad, would go on to be included in her live shows long after the other tracks from this album disappeared from them. But Touch is vastly different from the rest of her material (save for maybe a few tracks on Solace), making it a surprise to most curious fans. Her performance is the point where this is most obvious, as her gorgeous voice lacks most of the personality and emotion that she would later develop. But the material isn’t bad, just uncharacteristic of the rest of her career. Some fans might be disappointed by the copious amounts of keyboards and McLachlan’s restrained performance, but Touch is still a winner. Just a flawed winner, coming from a talented artist who was still searching for her artistic voice.

Solace is at once comforting, mysterious, expansive, timeless, and familiar. The sophomore jinx was certainly eluded here, as McLachlan sets forth a superior collection of songs and performances with the help of longtime producer Pierre Marchand. The opening track, “Drawn to the Rhythm,” serves its title well and does the job of luring you in. Intelligent, intriguing lyrics and lilting melodies abound, whether amidst the pulsing rhythms of “Into the Fire” and “Back Door Man” or the quietly profound stories of “Home” and “Shelter.” Although pretty much all of the tunes will grab you at one point or another, “The Path of Thorns (Terms)” and “I Will Not Forget You” are especially memorable, the latter not to be confused with McLachlan’s “I Will Remember You,” which appears on the 1995 soundtrack for The Brothers McMullen. Solace is a wonderful record that offers a glimpse of the astounding talent of a young Sarah McLachlan.

… the recording sounds as though it had been made just last week. George Szell and the Clevelanders render Schumann in the grand manner of the middle of the last century, before the horrendous politically correct, period instruments craze hit the classical world. To anyone who’s heard any of the more “authentic” recordings of the last couple of decades, this may sound somewhat bombastic, but that’s what makes this music so wonderful.!

Szell, it should be noted, had championed Schumann’s symphonies for 29 years before beginning to record the works, and featured at least one of the symphonies in 19 of his 24 years as music director of the Cleveland Orchestra. He was also known to alter the score, clarifying textures, adding or changing notes to clarify themes, and doing whatever he felt necessary to bring out the best in works that have often been disparaged by unsympathetic critics. Szell taps into a deeper mysticism than other conductors, his majesty captures German religiosity beautifully. The thrilling finales should leave you cheering in your seat. Buy this SACD and experience the joy of music all over again! You won’t regret it!

These performances remain as great as ever, and the remastering is a source of wonder; if you don’t own these recordings, here’s a rare chance to correct the oversight. Take advantage of it while you can.

Magical and stunning music! You don’t have to spend a fortune going back to vinyl, these SACD versions of 50 year-old analog recordings contain all that warmth and transparency you’re looking for. It’s not about digital vs analog, it’s about superb reproduction qualities with no gimmicks or artificial studio effects.

Szell’s Schumann is a MUST for any serious listener of nineteenth-century music. These discs are not merely an essential addition to a collection: this is the only account of the Schumann symphonies you should have. So why Schumann? And why Szell?

Szell’s commitment to performances of Schumann is well known; having programmed a Schumann symphony at least once in almost every season he conducted the Cleveland Orchestra, his knowledge of the composer is unsurpassed. He appreciated the nuances of Schumann better than any other conductor, even demonstrating the temerity to alter subtly Schumann’s scores in order to achieve a more refined balance of orchestral sounds. His Cleveland Orchestra here is playing at its finest. By the late 1950s and 60s Cleveland was as strong as any orchestra playing anywhere in the world. As an example, just listen to the 2nd movement (the scherzo) of the 2nd symphony; you will stunned by the perfect unison of the strings.

Schumann’s four symphonies are masterpieces deserving to be better known and appreciated. They evoke later Beethoven, particularly his 7th and 8th symphonies, but are entirely original, composed in an idiom uniquely Schumann’s own. They are filled with joyful melodies, thrillingprestissimo runs, and aching shifts between major and minor keys. Schumann is the true embodiment of the Romantic sensibility; in fact, Szell claimed that Schumann was the most perfect exemplar of Romanticism within classical music. Amazing performances, gorgeously remastered!

Esoteric have produced a remarkable transfer that preserves beautifully the hall sound, spatial information and detail. The brass and mass strings have excellent detail, revealing a lot of subtle harmonies and variation – a boon for anything Wagner. This contributes to an overall impression of sophistication and restraint and goes perfectly with Karajan’s Wagner.

In comparison with other SACDs in the Esoteric reissue program, I find the sound to be equally remarkable in quality and character to the the finest recordings available of – the highest demonstration quality recordings to start with and will better the present recording on any format.

For the source material used in the remastering, the packaging states (in Japanese) “remastered from original analog master tapes”. Based solely on the final merits Esoteric has splendidly succeeded. A must-have!

A note about the Esoteric EMI masterpiece collection:
The reissue of classical music masterpieces by ESOTERIC has attracted a lot of attention, both for its uncompromising commitment to recreating the original master sound, and for using hybrid Super Audio CD (SACD) technology to improve sound quality. This series marks the first hybrid SACD release of two selections from EMI classics that have been mainstays of the catalog since their initial release on LP, until the present digital age of CD. These new audio versions feature DSD mastering of the original recordings.

This, pop superstar Joel’s breakout album, came years after he first hit the charts with the novelty-ish “Piano Man.” In the meantime, the New York-based songwriter released two lackluster and stylistically confused platters that blunted interesting songs with a sound that was neither Elton mellow nor Elton attitude.

Produced by Phil Ramone, The Stranger took those who had written Joel off as a one-hit wonder by surprise (“Just the Way You Are” was among the biggest hits of 1977) and it remains a solid introduction to Joel’s restless muse at a crucial point in his career. It invited a few comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, with its prominent sax breaks, hard-edged rebel-rockers (“Only the Good Die Young”), and slice-of-life dramatics (“Scenes From an Italian Restaurant”), recounting life in a lower middle-class (Eastern Urban) setting; but Joel’s chameleonic, formalist approach to pop wasn’t to be so easily pigeonholed (Glass Houses, The Nylon Curtain, An Innocent Man…).

Billy Joel teamed with Phil Ramone, a famed engineer who had just scored his first producing hits with Art Garfunkel’s Breakaway and Paul Simon’s Still Crazy After All These Years for The Stranger, his follow-up to Turnstiles. Joel still favored big, sweeping melodies, but Ramone convinced him to streamline his arrangements and clean up the production. The results aren’t necessarily revelatory, since he covered so much ground on Turnstiles, but the commercialism of The Stranger is a bit of a surprise. None of his ballads have been as sweet or slick as “Just the Way You Are”; he never had created a rocker as bouncy or infectious as “Only the Good Die Young”; and the glossy production of “She’s Always a Woman” disguises its latent misogynist streak. Joel balanced such radio-ready material with a series of New York vignettes, seemingly inspired by Springsteen’s working-class fables and clearly intended to be the artistic centerpieces of the album. They do provide The Stranger with the feel of a concept album, yet there is no true thematic connection between the pieces, and his lyrics are often vague or mean-spirited. His lyrical shortcomings are overshadowed by his musical strengths. Even if his melodies sound more Broadway than Beatles — the epic suite “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant” feels like a show-stopping closer — there’s no denying that the melodies of each song on The Stranger are memorable, so much so that they strengthen the weaker portions of the album. Joel rarely wrote a set of songs better than those on The Stranger, nor did he often deliver an album as consistently listenable.

Billy Joel hit back as hard as he could with Glass Houses, his bid to prove that he could rock as hard as any of those new wave punks. He might not have proven himself a punk — for all of his claims of being a hard rocker, his work inevitably is pop because of his fondness for melody — but he proved to himself that he could still rock, even if the critics didn’t give him any credit for it. It was now time to mature, to move pop/rock into the middle age and, in the process, earn critical respect. In short, The Nylon Curtain is where Billy Joel went serious, consciously crafting a song cycle about Baby Boomers in the Reagan era. Since this was an album about Baby Boomers, he chose to base his music almost entirely on the Beatles, the pivotal rock band for his generation. Joel is naturally inclined to write big melodies like McCartney, but he idolizes Lennon, which makes The Nylon Curtain a fascinating cross between ear candy and social commentary. His desire to record a grand concept album is admirable, but his ever-present lyrical shortcomings mean that the songs paint a picture without arriving at any insights. He occasionally gets lost in his own ambition, as on the waterlogged second side, but the first half of the song suite — “Allentown,” “Laura,” “Pressure,” “Goodnight Saigon,” “She’s Right on Time” — is layered, successful, mature pop that brings Joel tantalizingly close to his ultimate goal of sophisticated pop/rock for mature audiences.

Having scored three multi-platinum hits in a row, Billy Joel took a breather, releasing his first live album, Songs in the Attic, as he worked on his ambitious follow-up to Glass Houses. Joel wisely decided to use the live album as an opportunity to draw attention to songs from his first four albums. Apart from “Piano Man,” none of those songs had been heard by the large audience he had won with The Stranger. Furthermore, he now had a seasoned backing band that helped give his music a specific identity — in short, it was an opportunity to reclaim these songs, now that he had a signature sound. And Joel didn’t botch the opportunity — Songs in the Attic is an excellent album, ranking among his very best work. With the possible exception of the Turnstiles material, every song is given a fuller, better arrangement that makes it all spring to life. “Los Angelenos” and “Everybody Loves You Now” hit harder in the live setting, while ballads like “She’s Got a Way,” “Summer, Highland Falls,” and “I’ve Loved These Days” are richer and warmer in these versions. A few personal favorites from these albums may be missing, but what is here is impeccable, proving that even if Joel wasn’t a celebrity in the early ’70s, his best songs of the era rivaled his biggest hits.
