Nicki Parrott plays bass and sings Nat King Cole’s songbook with the help of fellow jazzmates John Di Martino on piano, Frank Vignola on guitar and Lisa Parrott on saxophone and clarinet. “Nicki brings clear articulation, beautiful tone, a sense of rhythmic assuredness and a touch of allure to inventive arrangements.” ~ Jazz Times

Born in Newcastle, Australia, Nicki started her musical training at age four with the piano, followed by the flute, soon after. Nicki switched to double bass at the age of 15. After graduating high school she moved to Sydney to study jazz at the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music where she began to play with Australian musicians such as Mike Nock, Dale Barlow, Paul Grabowsky, Bernie McGann, and Ten Part Invention. She also toured Australia with Russian musicians Daniel Kramer and Alexander Fischer and American trumpeters Bobby Shew and Chuck Findley. She continued her studies with various bassists including visiting artists Ray Brown and John Clayton. In June 2000, Nicki began performing on Monday nights at the Iridium Jazz Club with the legendary guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. As part of the Les Paul Trio, Nicki worked side-by-side with guitar greats from Paul McCartney, Slash, Steve Miller to fellow Aussie, Tommy Emmanuel. Since then she has performed with such notable musicians as Michel Legrand, Joe Wilder, Randy Brecker, Clark Terry, Jose Feliciano, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Pizzarelli, Dick Hyman, Patti Labelle & the New York Pops Orchestra, Harry Allen, Marlena Shaw, David Krakauer, Ken Peplowski, Ann Hampton Callaway, Bill Mays, Scott Hamilton, Lillian Boutte, Larry Carlton and Houston Person, just to name a few.

An even deeper jazz set than Nicole Henry’s first album — recorded with the Eddie Higgins Trio, and done in a style that’s traditional, yet extremely soulful! There’s a sound here that reminds us a lot of Carmen Lundy — as Nicole’s singing jazz, but doing so in a mode that’s never draped with any of the torchy cliches of other singers — and which is as informed by a history of soul music as it is more standard influences from jazz. The recording quality is great — thanks to the top-shelf Venus Records standards.

The debut solo album from Luther Vandross featured one outstanding song after another. Vandross concocts a bouncy, vibrant flow on his up-tempo numbers and an intimate, emotional connection on his moderate grooves and his lone ballad. The title track stormed up the Billboard R&B charts to number one where it remained for two weeks. The mellow groove of “Don’t You Know That,” which checked in at number ten, was the second single. “Sugar and Spice” had less of an impact on the charts due to its short stay of six weeks. However, this feverish number gets all the juices flowing as does the unreleased “I’ve Been Working.” Also featured on this set is the sentimental number “You Stopped Loving Me.” The song was written by Vandross but initially released by Roberta Flack; both versions stand tall. “A House Is Not a Home” is the only ballad, and an elegant one it is, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David and originally sung by Dionne Warwick nearly 20 years prior. Vandross orchestrates a contemporary masterpiece with this vintage number. Though it was never an official release by the label, it’s a quiet storm jewel. In addition to his many music credits, Vandross was a featured guest vocalist with the progressive band Change. The same vocal savvy and smooth styling that the New York City native exhibited on songs like “Searching” and “Glow of Love” resurface here. This is one of the better R&B albums of the early ’80s.

Shania Twain – Up! (2002) [Reissue 2003] {2.0 & 5.1}
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 73:17 minutes | Scans included | 4,4 GB

When Up! was released in November 2002, Shania Twain revealed in one of many promotional interviews that she writes far more songs than can fit on her records and that she hides any personal, introspective songs she pens, not even playing them for her husband and collaborator Robert John “Mutt” Lange. Now, this is certainly a psychological quirk worth exploring, but it also suggests why Twain’s albums are such brilliant pieces of mainstream pop. Anything that doesn’t fit the mold is discarded, so the album can hum along on its big, polished, multipurpose hooks and big, sweeping emotions. This is Super-Size pop, as outsized and grandiose as good pop should be. And, unlike the work of most pop divas, where the subject matter is firmly about the singer, none of the songs on Up! are remotely about Shania Twain, the person — let’s face it, she’s never faced a situation like “Waiter! Bring Me Water!,” where she’s afraid her guy is going to be stolen away by their hot waitress. No, these songs have been crafted as universal anthems, so listeners can hear themselves within these tales. Just as cleverly, the songs are open-ended and mutable — always melodic, but never stuck in any particular style, so they can be subjected to any kind of mix and sound just as good. (Indeed, Up! was initially released in no less than three different mixes — the “Red” pop mix, the “Green” country mix, and the “Blue” international mix; sometimes the differences in mixes were so slight, it sounded like nothing was changed, but each mix revealed how sturdy and melodic the structure of each of the 19 songs was, and how they were designed to sound good in any setting.) True, the sheer length of the album could be seen as off-putting at first, since these 19 tracks don’t necessarily flow as a whole. Then again, part of the genius of Up! is that it’s designed as a collection of tracks, so the album is durable enough to withstand years on the charts, producing singles with different textures and moods every few months. Time revealed Come on Over as a stellar pop album, and the same principle works for Up!. Upon the first listen, singles seem indistinct, and it seems like too much to consume at once, but once you know the lay of the land, the hooks become indelible and the gargantuan glossiness of the production is irresistible. In other words, it’s a more than worthy follow-up to the great mainstream pop album of the late ’90s, and proof that when it comes to shiny, multipurpose pop, nobody does it better than Shania Twain.

It’s easy to write off There’s a Riot Goin’ On as one of two things — Sly Stone’s disgusted social commentary or the beginning of his slow descent into addiction. It’s both of these things, of course, but pigeonholing it as either winds up dismissing the album as a whole, since it is so bloody hard to categorize. What’s certain is that Riot is unlike any of Sly & the Family Stone’s other albums, stripped of the effervescence that flowed through even such politically aware records as Stand! This is idealism soured, as hope is slowly replaced by cynicism, joy by skepticism, enthusiasm by weariness, sex by pornography, thrills by narcotics. Joy isn’t entirely gone — it creeps through the cracks every once and awhile and, more disturbing, Sly revels in his stoned decadence. What makes Riot so remarkable is that it’s hard not to get drawn in with him, as you’re seduced by the narcotic grooves, seductive vocals slurs, leering electric pianos, and crawling guitars. As the themes surface, it’s hard not to nod in agreement, but it’s a junkie nod, induced by the comforting coma of the music. And damn if this music isn’t funk at its deepest and most impenetrable — this is dense music, nearly impenetrable, but not from its deep grooves, but its utter weariness. Sly’s songwriting remains remarkably sharp, but only when he wants to write — the foreboding opener “Luv N’ Haight,” the scarily resigned “Family Affair,” the cracked cynical blues “Time,” and “(You Caught Me) Smilin’.” Ultimately, the music is the message, and while it’s dark music, it’s not alienating — it’s seductive despair, and that’s the scariest thing about it.

The Godfathers of Glitch and the Kings of Kling-Klang come out of seclusion with a double live CD culled from various concerts on their 2004 tour. Minimum-Maximum is essentially a greatest-hits album with an audience applauding and occasionally shouting. Without them, of course, you’d never know the album was live, since Kraftwerk is the band that put the programming in pop music. Not much has changed with them since the 1980s. They’re still wired to the same sonic circuitry as on Electric Café in 1986, sculpting glistening electro-soundscapes that pulse but never quite groove. And they still sing in that flat, German-accented English and French with Speak and Spell electro-voices. But rather than sound dated, this has a timeless charm, especially since Kraftwerk are among the few Kraut rock groups with a sense of humor. With only two studio albums in the last 20 years, you have to give them credit for not caving in to current electronica and techno trends–Kraftwerk remain resolutely electronic. Even their samples sound synthesized. But also give them credit for some of the most relentlessly glistening electronic music ever crafted, and a sound that remains surprisingly pure. All the hits are here, from “Autobahn” to “Tour de France,” but nicely buffed to a high chrome finish.

For rock bands, hauling gear across countries and continents has not changed a great deal in the past several decades. The same can’t be said for Kraftwerk. Grappling with sensitive cables and other technical gadgets in extreme climates has become a thing of the past. For them, everything has become easier to manage and transport, so it’s natural that they’d become more enthusiastic about touring. Recorded during the group’s 2004 journey through Europe, Japan, and the U.S., Minimum-Maximum is a two-disc representation of their revitalized live show. Visuals are such a crucial aspect of their performances that the set will naturally fall short of making you feel as if you are there — whether it’s Moscow, Warsaw, Budapest, or San Francisco — while in your car or living room. More crucially, who really knows exactly how much live manipulation is going on with the elements of each track? Whatever the case, it all sounds good — sharp, vibrant, alive. The original arrangements are often altered slightly, the tracks are tactfully sequenced, and the crowd noise is kept to a minimum (either near the close of a track or in recognition of one as it begins), so the release is sort of a glorified greatest-hits collection. Along with some wise selections from 2003’s Tour de France Soundtracks, there’s plenty of the expected classic material, all of which has given life to so much industrial, dance, and rap music. (You could, in fact, walk into the average techno club or turn on a mainstream radio station the week this was released and hear traces of Kraftwerk in one form or another.) “Radioactivity” and “The Robots,” two of the more altered tracks, contain the greatest thrills; the former’s permafrost placidity spirals into a frictionless dancefloor charge, while the latter is more muscular than ever, acknowledging advancements made by acolytes Model 500 and Underground Resistance.

The Omnibus Wind Ensemble’s interest in Frank Zappa’s music dates back to the beginning of the 1980s, almost from their very beginnings. Under the motto “From Mozart to Zappa”, which also became the title of their 1st, widely acclaimed CD on the Opus3 label, they have had many of Frank Zappa’s compositions in their repertoire over the years.

The music of Frank Zappa has always defied classification, & those who have not studied it closely perhaps do not realize how much jazz & classical music it contains. (Zappa composed a percussion piece when he was only 15!) Arguably, Frank Zappa is 1 of this century’s most interesting composers & perhaps the best kept musical secret in the USA.

This Omnibus SACD “Music By Frank Zappa” is a grand tour of his music – from the beautiful “Peaches En Regalia”, the highly complex “Revised Music For A Low Budget Orchestra”, the outstandingly humorous “Brown Shoes Don’t Make It” to the jazz-bluesy introduction etc. of “Inca Roads”, with all the fireworks that follow it! The disc ends with a piece which was not written by Frank Zappa, namely Maurice Ravel’s “Bolero” here in a big-band-influenced special arrangement inspired by Zappa’s own version from 1988. Classical, Jazz or Rock!?

Known for their hard-bop style of jazz, the sextet One For All was formed in 1997 and features Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone), Jim Rotondi (trumpet), Steve Davis (trombone), David Hazeltine (piano), David Williams (bass) and Joe Farnsworth (drums). The group has been compared to 1960s-era Blue Note jazz and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, and borrowed the name One For All from the Jazz Messengers’ last album. Jazz Times’ critic David Adler has called One For All “New York’s premier hard-bop supergroup”.

One for All has developed into one of the solid hard bop units, consisting of six talented New York-based musicians, most of whom have recorded a fair amount as individual leaders. With tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander, trombonist Steve Davis, and trumpeter Jim Rotundi in the front line, along with pianist David Hazeltine, bassist David Williams, and drummer Joe Farnsworth providing a great rhythm section, the sextet delves into decades-old gems like “Killer Joe,” “Mating Call,” and “I Remember Clifford” with authority. But such a band needs to come up with original material to stay fresh, so Alexander contributed the mellow, sauntering ballad “Island,” which features superb interplay among the horns. Davis penned the driving”Hot Sake,” which sounds like it would have been perfect fodder for Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, or any hard bop band. Recommended.

Peter Bernstein and his guitar join together with Brad Mehldau on piano, Larry Genadier on bass and Bill Stewart on drums to complile a 10-track SACD that features Bernstein originals “Venus Blues” and “Just A Thought” as well as jazz staples from Phillip Springer, Harry Warren and many more.

Guitarist Peter Bernstein is reunited with pianist Brad Mehldau once more (their fourth recording together under Bernstein’s name) and also keeps the rhythm section intact from his earlier Criss Cross CD Heart’s Content, with Larry Grenadier on bass and drummer Bill Stewart. These rewarding sessions blend elements of hard bop and post-bop, including an intriguing, slightly off-center approach to “Stranger in Paradise” and an intricate, moving interpretation of “This Is Always,” a ballad that can become stale in the wrong hands. The quartet also tackles quite a few works that don’t get all that much attention, like a greasy arranging of Babs Gonzales’ “Soul Stirrin'” and a breezy take of “That Sunday, That Summer,” the latter a hit for Nat King Cole during his years as a popular singer. Bernstein also adds four potent originals, all of which set the band afire. It is a shame that Peter Bernstein is overlooked by American record labels, but be thankful that the Japanese know talent when they hear it and invest the time and money to document his work. Highly recommended!

Pharoah Sanders is one of the few horn players whose sound is instantly commanding and recognizable. He’s often compared to John Coltrane in their similar power, spirituality, and preference for the meaty middle register of the tenor, and in fact, one of the selections here is a long, atmospheric meditation on Coltrane’s “Welcome”. This album is a rare treat, since Sanders has not been recording as prolifically as he did in the first four decades of his career.

The Creator Has a Master Plan is largely a reflection of the sort of sets that Pharoah Sanders has been doing live — a mixture of ballads, blues, and spiritual pieces, be they originals, standards, or drawn from the Coltrane catalog. Sanders is heard only on tenor sax on this record, supported by William Henderson (piano), Ira Coleman (bass) and Joe Farnsworth (drums). Sanders is best known for his fiery work with John Coltrane’s last bands and his free jazz workouts in the late 1960s and early ’70s.

If he’s not quite as pyrotechnic as before, his sound and soul are undiminished, and he’s still coming up with unusual timbres The title track, his timeless 1969 hit, gets nine minutes here rather than the 32-minute original exposition with Leon Thomas’s memorable yodeling, but it’s still a tour-de-force. Everyone gets to stretch out on “Tokyo Blues,” and while the band isn’t particularly inspired by “The Greatest Love of All,” (Whitney Houston’s hit) they do a fine job on Sanders’s own “Tina, and “It’s Easy to Remember,” the latter of which showcases Sanders’s way of excavating a ballad. There’s also great support and propulsion throughout from bassist Ira Coleman, and drummer Joe Farnsworth, with pianist William Henderson supplying some swinging solos.

Phil Woods is right at home during these 2002 sessions at Red Rock Recording Studio near his home in Delaware Water Gap, Pennsylvania. With his regular group (Bill Charlap, Steve Gilmore, and Bill Goodwin) minus trumpeter Brian Lynch, Woods adds strings conducted by his old friend Eric Doney on this collection of ballads. “And When We’re Young” is the alto saxophonist’s tribute to the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was assassinated around the time it was written. The leader’s lush alto gives way to a brisk Latin-flavored passage featuring powerful solos by violinist Andy Stein and Charlap on piano, while Woods humorously detours into “Nature Boy” upon his return. The strings introduce a lively arrangement of “It Never Entered My Mind,” and another favorite of the alto saxophonist, “If I Should Lose You.” Unlike many jazz recordings with strings, they complement rather than overwhelm the musicians. But it is almost impossible for a Phil Woods-led date to turn out less than excellent.

A Salty Dog is the third studio album by English progressive rock band Procol Harum, released in 1969. The album has an ostensibly nautical theme, as indicated by its cover (a pastiche of the famous Player’s Navy Cut cigarette pack). Interspersed with straight rock, blues and pop items, A Salty Dog showed a slight change of direction from its predecessors, being thematically less obscure. The title track itself was the first Procol track to use an orchestra.

This album, the group’s third, was where they showed just how far their talents extended across the musical landscape, from blues to R&B to classical rock. In contrast to their hastily recorded debut, or its successor, done to stretch their performance and composition range, A Salty Dog was recorded in a reasonable amount of time, giving the band a chance to fully develop their ideas. The title track is one of the finest songs ever to come from Procol Harum and one of the best pieces of progressive rock ever heard, and a very succinct example at that at under five minutes running time – the lyric and the music combine to form a perfect mood piece, and the performance is bold and subtle at once, in the playing and the singing, respectively. The range of sounds on the rest includes “Juicy John Pink,” a superb piece of pre-World War II-style country blues, while “Crucifiction Lane” is a killer Otis Redding-style soul piece, and “Pilgrim’s Progress” is a virtuoso keyboard workout.

Genre: Jazz

A saxophonist whose patiently evolving style has been one of the more interesting stories in contemporary jazz, Ravi Coltrane helps launch Columbia’s Eighty-Eights subsidiary (founded by Japanese producer Yasohachi “88” Itoh) with a set that is by turns more freewheeling and lyrical than his previous major label efforts. Featuring two bands–one with George Colligan on piano and the other Andy Milne–Mad 6 reflects Ravi’s involvement in both jazz classicism and the throbbing, funkified bop of Brooklyn’s M-Base school.

Anytime that the son of a jazz great not only follows his father into the business but also plays the same instruments, the difficulty in overcoming the shadow must be incredible. Yet Ravi Coltrane has displayed a great deal of maturity throughout his career, unafraid of covering his father’s compositions or songs that he recorded, while successfully finding his own voice. These 2002 sessions feature Coltrane with two distinct rhythm sections, with either Andy Milne or George Colligan on piano and James Genus or Darryl Hall on bass, plus drummer Steve Haas. The comparisons to John Coltrane are inevitable with his explosive interpretations of “26-2” and “Fifth House,” along with the bluesy, loping rendition of Thelonious Monk’s “Ask Me Now.” Yet the tense, brisk arrangement of “‘Round Midnight” suggests the hustle and bustle of Manhattan nightlife at that hour, with a tense rhythm behind his furious soprano sax. Ravi’s originals also demonstrate his promise as a composer, including the driving “Between Lines” and the delightfully abstract “The Mad 6.” This is one of the best efforts by a fine musician who deserves to be evaluated on his own terms.

One of Sir Roland Hanna’s last recordings prior to his death at the end of 2002 was this session for the Japanese Venus label. With seven of the 12 songs incorporating the word “dream” in their titles, it seemed to be a fitting title for the album. Hanna is joined by bassist Paul West and drummer Eddie Locke, kicking off with a rollicking take of “When I Grow Too Old to Dream.” The pianist and the bassist trade lines throughout the lush introduction to the infrequently heard “Street of Dreams.” The joyful interpretation of “This Time the Dream’s on Me” (a favorite of Marian McPartland) and swinging treatment of “Dream” are also highlights. The “non-dream” tracks include a lullaby-like arrangement of “A Sleepin’ Bee” and a toe-tapping “I Hear a Rhapsody.” Highly recommended.

Roy Haynes is a legendary drummer who’s had a very long and illustrious career, and he is still going strong with incredible energy and vitality. For this album – now considered a classic – Eighty-Eight’s producer Yasohachi Itoh put together an all-star, intergenerational band around him: Kenny Barron and David Kikoski on piano, Dave Holland and Christian McBride on bass, Joshua Redman on sax and John Scofield on guitar.

These all-stars were all eager to play with Haynes, and their joy of making music together is infectious. Recorded by the legendary engineer David Baker in pure DSD and produced as a hybrid SACD, the sound quality of this disc is exemplary. Strongly recommended to jazz fans and audiophiles!

Originally released in Japan on producer Yasohachi Itoh’s 88 label, Columbia has licensed several titles from the audiophile label, including this one from veteran hard bop/new thing drummer Roy Haynes. Love Letters gathers an all-star roster, including pianists Kenny Barron and David Kikoski, bassists Dave Holland and Christian McBride, tenor player Joshua Redman, and guitarist John Scofield for a thoroughly solid set of standards. Even as he approaches his eighth decade, Haynes continues to display the drive that has made him an in-demand timekeeper since his tenure with Charlie Parker and Bud Powell. It’s evident throughout the entire album, from the rock-ist suggestions of Mongo Santamaria’s “Afro Blue” to the poignant take on Horace Silver’s “Que Pasa.” All of the groupings have their shining moments, but Haynes with Holland and Scofield is a combination that demands to be documented further. Recommended.

Recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Casino De Montreux, Montreux, Switzerland on June 15, 1968. Originally released on Verve (8762). Includes liner notes by Gene Lees. Digitally remastered by Dennis Drake (Polygram Studios) & Gert Van Hoeyen (Polygram Sound Lab, Baarn, The Netherlands). A unique Japanese SACD remaster of the American musician’s 1968 release as part of the ‘Verve 60th Anniversary Supreme Sound Edition’ series; DSD digitally remastered by Seigen Ono. Centre label of the original LP faithfully reproduced on the CD.

At the Montreux Jazz Festival, marks the beginning of stylistic changes for the legendary pianist. Only 1 year earlier, his At Town Hall release found his approach generally more introspective & brooding. In contrast, this set is more lively, playful, & experimental. Much of this is down to the active & intense drumming of Jack DeJohnette, who had joined the trio only a short time before this concert was recorded; longtime bandmate Eddie Gomez is also featured on this album. His energetic soloing adds veracity to tunes such as “Embraceable You” & “A Sleeping Bee.” DeJohnette, too, is given several opportunities to display his drumming skills. His lengthy solo on “Nardis” displays his technical prowess & 4-way coordination; such acumen would later cause jazz fans & critics alike to hail DeJohnette as 1 of the world’s premier jazz drummers.
Evans, famous for a soft-spoken pianistic touch, seems driven to new vistas on this album. He experiments more with harmonic dissonance & striking rhythmical contrasts, making this his most extroverted playing since his freshman release, New Jazz Conceptions. This is part of Verve’s Master Edition series.

When this album was recorded in February of 1961, it had been more than year since the Portrait in Jazz was issued, the disc that won the critics over. By the time of this issue, Evans had released four albums in six years, a pace unheard of during that time. Most musicians were issuing two, three, and even four records a year during the same era. Many speculate on Evans’ personal problems at the time, but the truth of the matter lies in the recordings themselves, and Explorations proves that the artist was worth waiting for no matter what else was going on out there. Evans, with Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro, was onto something as a trio, exploring the undersides of melodic and rhythmic constructions that had never been considered by most. For one thing, Evans resurrects a number of tunes that had been considered hopelessly played out, and literally reinvents them — “How Deep Is the Ocean” and “Sweet and Lovely.” His harmonic richness that extends the melodic and color palette of these numbers literally revived them from obscurity and brought them back into the canon. He also introduced “Haunted Heart” into the jazz repertoire, with a wonderfully impressionistic melodic structure, offered space, and depth by the understatement of Motian and extension by LaFaro’s canny use of intervals. Also noteworthy is Miles Davis’ “Nardis,” which Evans first played on a Cannonball Adderley set a couple of years before. The rhythmic workout by the Motian and LaFaro places Evans’ own playing in a new context, with shorter lines, chopping up the meter, and a series of arpeggios that open the ground for revelatory solo in counterpoint by LaFaro. Explorations is an extraordinary example of the reach and breadth of this trio at its peak.
