Recorded in 1981 and produced by Concord founder Carl Jefferson, this is another jewel of an album from the Concord Jazz catalog. A classic live recording from the Keystone Korner jazz club in San Francisco and with great sound, this is vintage late Getz and includes some of his best performances of standards like “Easy Living,” “Sweet Lorraine,” “Old Devil Moon,” “I’m Old Fashioned” and the title track. Now out of print on regualar CD, this SACD reissue will only enhance what is already an excellent Getz title.

This album was recorded at the same sessions that resulted in The Dolphin but were not released until after Stan Getz’s death. Actually the music (which features pianist Lou Levy, bassist Monty Budwig and drummer Victor Lewis in addition to the leader’s tenor) is the equal of the original set, with “How About You,” “Easy Living,” and “Old Devil Moon” showing off Getz’s tone and strong improvising skills at its best.

Tracklist:

01. How About You

04. Sweet Lorraine
05. Old Devil Moon
06. I’m Old Fashioned
07. Spring Is Here

Personnel

Self-taught musician, Sunao Wada began playing the guitar at the age of 11, and at an early stage of his career decided to become the “No. 1 blues guitarist in Japan”. Recorded in 1972, Coco’s Blues, named after the jazz club Wada manages in addition to his concert tours, fulfills the desire of producer “Tee” Fujii, to create an all-blues album, “a quality piece of music that truly expresses artists’ emotions”.

Coco’s Blues is Wada’s first leader album, and an all-blues album at that, recorded in 1972. Three numbers were composed by Wada himself, one by the pianist of the session who is also known for his blues chops, and one by Charlie Parker (“Billie’s Bounce”). Alto sax player Kenji Mori and flugel horn player Kunji Shigi join the quartet and stretch out on two numbers. If you have a slightest doubt as to whether a Japanese guitarist can really play the blues – here’s the only one answer: Listen!

Susan Wong was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to Sydney, Australia with her family at the age of seven. Musically inclined from a young age, she learned to play the piano at age five and later she also learned the violin. At Kambala in Sydney, she sang alto in the choir and appeared in the school dramas (Gilbert & Sullivan & the like) and entered a number of piano competitions. She received an associate diploma (ATCL) in piano from Trinity College London.
Her first break in the music world was at the age of sixteen when her parents entered her for a singing contest in Sydney. It was organized by TVB with the winner to be offered a recording contract with one of the big music companies in Hong Kong. She won the competition and went to Hong Kong, where she met with the TVB producers who wanted her to sign with one of the music labels. After much deliberation she decided that a music career wasn’t right for her at that time and instead returned to Australia to study at University.

After graduating from university, she returned to Hong Kong in 1997 to help run her family’s accounting business; at this time, she gained her CPA certification. One of her students, who she was teaching piano, was working for a Hong Kong independent label, and Wong asked the boss if they wanted a singer. Wong started recording her favourite English songs and made the album Close To You (2002).

In early 2007, Susan Wong signed a new recording agreement with Hong Kong-based Evolution Music Group and released her first album under evosound in August 2007.

The first release under this agreement, Someone Like You, was recorded in Nashville, USA and won critical and commercial success throughout South East Asia.

Wong recorded her second album, 511, for the evosound label in Geneva Switzerland with producer Adrien Zerbini.] It contained bossa nova influenced versions of songs such as Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean and Everytime You Go Away by Hall & Oates. Billie Jean received extensive airplay throughout South East Asia and a version on YouTube received over 450,000 views.

Returning to Geneva in 2010, Wong started work again with producer Adrien Zerbini along with guitarist Ignacio Lamas. The recordings mostly concentrated on sparse acoustic new interpretations of classic pop songs from the late 1960s and early 1970s including California Dreamin’, The Sound of Silence and Have You Ever Seen the Rain?. The ‘studio master’ download of the album peaked at No. 1 on the Linn Records ‘studio master’ download chart and spent over six months in the Top 10.

Features Stereo and Multichannel Surround Sound | Concord Records # SACD-1017-6 | Genre: Jazz

The selections on this album span 70 years of popular song, because the more Susannah felt she knows about singers and songs, the more she adores the women who started it all: the great Empress of the Blues, Bessie Smith, and the mother of all modern popular singing, Ethel Waters. She also feels a great affinity for Brazilian songs, the sound of the language and the sadness and seriousness of the lyrics, and they too are included here.

For this Concord release, singer Susannah McCorkle alternates vintage standards and obscurities with some more recent songs such as “The Waters Of March,” and Dave Frishberg’s “Quality Time,” and Paul Simon’s “Still Crazy After All These Years.” The bread and butter is still the older tunes and among the highlights are “The Lady Is A Tramp,” “My Sweetie Went Away,” “Hit The Road To Dreamland” and a remake of “The People That You Never Get To Love.” McCorkle is joined by four horns (including trumpeter Randy Sandke and Ken Peplowski on tenor and clarinet) plus a rhythm section led by her pianist Allen Farnham who also serves as her musical director. A fine all-round showcase for the talented singer.

Suzanne Vega is the self-titled debut album by Suzanne Vega. It was well-received by music journalists in the U.S. and reached platinum status in the United Kingdom. Produced by Lenny Kaye and Steve Addabbo, the songs feature Vega’s acoustic guitar in straightforward arrangements. In 1989, Rolling Stone magazine listed Suzanne Vega at number 80 on its “100 Best Albums of the Eighties”. It is also mentioned in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Though early comparisons were made to Joni Mitchell, Suzanne Vega’s true antecedents were Janis Ian and Leonard Cohen. Like Ian, she sings with a precise, frequently half-spoken phrasing that gives her lyrics an intensity that seems to suggest an unsteady control consciously held over emotional chaos. Like Cohen, Vega observes the world in poetic metaphor, her cold urban landscapes reflecting a troubled sense of love and loss. The key track is “Small Blue Thing,” in which the singer pictures herself as an object “Like a marble/or an eye,” “made of china/made of glass,” “lost inside your pocket,” and “turning in your hand.” The sharply picked acoustic guitar and other isolated musical elements echo the closely observed scenes – everything seems to be in tight close-up and sharp focus. Often, the singer seems to be using the songs to measure an emotional distance; sometimes, as in “Marlene on the Wall,” she observes her own actions from a remove. In “Freeze Tag,” she tells a companion, “I will be Dietrich/and you can be Dean”; in “Marlene,” a poster of the aloof movie star “watches from the wall,” observing the singer’s succession of lovers, and she tries to emulate her heroine’s persona, telling the current one, “Even if I am in love with you/all this to say, what’s it to you?” The ten songs on Suzanne Vega constitute the self-analysis of a young woman who desires possession without offering commitment; no wonder that, upon its release, it was taken to heart by young women across the country and in Europe.

Sviatoslav Richter – Deutsche Grammophon Concerto Recordings (2019) [3x SACD]
SACD Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 219:09 min | Scans incl. | 8,88 GB
Features 1958, 1959 & 1962 Recordings | Deutsche Grammophon / Tower Records, Japan # PROC 2196~8

From the heyday of Svyatoslav Richter, all the concertos recorded by DG from 1958 to 62 were assembled into 3 pieces (except Disc 3, these are 1st time on SACD). Features the works by Robert Schumann, W.A. Mozart, Sergey Prokofiev, Ludwig Van Beethoven, Sergei Rachmaninov & P.I. Tchaikovsky. This is a Sviatoslav Richter’s special collaboration with Wittold Lovitki, Kurt Sanderling, Herbert von Karajan, Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Symphony Orchestra, etc. Features the new mastering from the original analogue master tapes.

From the age of 43 to 46, Richter has gathered all three concertos recorded on the DG label during the middle of the season. Except DISC3 Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, it is the world’s first SA-CD. Neither of these two songs has been on the market for a while on SA-CD, and they have not been marketed by Universal.
Richter, who was known as a phantom pianist and rarely performed in the West, recorded a picture of an exhibition in Sofia, Bulgaria in February 1958, which was released on the West as a record. The real name will be earned worldwide. In 1958, the 1st Tchaikovsky Competition was held and Richter participated as a judge. The influence was growing more and more, such as acclaiming Cliburn. DG, who had already recorded Schumann’s solo work in November 1956, finally started recording a concerto in October 1958 with the DG staff getting into Warsaw. The first recording was Schumann, the first song of DISC1. In April of the following year, four songs were recorded together, including Mozart, Prokofiev, and Rachmaninoff, and the evaluation of Richel was fixed. Among them, Richel (piano sonata No. 7 premiere), who had a close relationship with Prokofiev, was especially loved by No. 5 (recorded in the former EMI with Masere in 1970), and it is also evaluated that there is still no performance beyond this The second record of Rachmaninov, an absolute masterpiece, became a recording that will remain in history.

Electric Warrior is the sixth album by British rock group T. Rex, and is widely considered to be one of the quintessential glam rock releases.

Electric Warrior reached number thirty-two in the US; it went to number one for several weeks in the UK, becoming the biggest album of 1971. In 2003 it was ranked number 160 in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The album contains two of T. Rex’s most popular songs, “Get It On” and “Jeepster.” In the United States, “Get It On”‘s title was modified to “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” to distinguish it from Chase’s song “Get It On,” which was also released in late 1971. (The printing of the song title “Bang a Gong (Get It On)” on the back cover of original Reprise Records U.S. copies of Electric Warrior is obviously in a different typefont from the surrounding text, with the song’s original title retained when printing the lyrics.) “Get It On” was T. Rex’s biggest single and their only U.S. hit (#10).

Bolan, in a 1971 interview contained on the Rhino Records reissue, said of the album “I think Electric Warrior, for me, is the first album which is a statement of 1971 for us in England. I mean that’s… If anyone ever wanted to know why we were big in the other part of the world, that album says it, for me.”

The sleeve was designed by British art design group Hipgnosis. In the November 2001 issue of Vanity Fair American musician Beck chose it as one of his 50 favorite album sleeves. Its iconic design would later influence the cover of †, the 2007 debut album by French electronic music duo Justice

Although it features the beautiful recorder of Leslie Penny and the Chieftains’ Paddy Maloney playing the uilean pipe, Ommadawn didn’t gain Mike Oldfield the success he was looking for – The album was released in the same year as the David Bedford-arranged Orchestral Tubular Bells and nine months after Oldfield picked up a Grammy award for the original Tubular Bells album – The most pleasing attribute of Ommadawn is its incorporation of both African and Irish music in its symphonic rock & roll mainframe – Boosted by a hearty amount of different horns, piano, cello, trumpet, and synthesizer, the album has its moments of rising action, but the whole of Ommadawn fails to keep its lovely segments around long enough, and there are some rather lengthy instances that include bland runs of unvaried music – Another plus is Oldfield’s use of a choir, giving the album a soft, humanistic feel when contrasted against the keyboards or synthesizer – While it does include flashes of Mike Oldfield’s brilliance, the entire album may seem a little anticlimactic when compared to some of his other releases.

Electric Warrior is a 1971 album by Marc Bolan’s band T. Rex, their sixth since their debut as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1968, and their second under the name T. Rex. The album marked a turning point in the band’s sound, dispensing with the folk-oriented music of the group’s previous albums and pioneering a flamboyant, pop-friendly take on electric rock and roll known as glam rock. The album reached number 1 on the UK charts and became the best selling album of 1971. Electric Warrior has since received acclaim as a pivotal release of the glam rock movement.

With It’s My Life, Talk Talk proved that they could pull off an entire album of strong material. With The Colour of Spring, they took it one step further, moving to a near-concept song cycle, following the emotional ups and downs of relationships and pondering life in general. Musically, they built on the experimental direction of the previous album with interesting rhythms, sweeping orchestration, complex arrangements, and even a children’s chorus to create an evocative, hypnotic groove. Though the songs were catchier on the earlier efforts and the ambient experimentation was more fully achieved later on, The Colour of Spring succeeded in marrying the two ideas into one unique sound for their most thoroughly satisfying album.

Compare Spirit of Eden with any other previous release in the Talk Talk catalog, and it’s almost impossible to believe it’s the work of the same band — exchanging electronics for live, organic sounds and rejecting structure in favor of mood and atmosphere, the album is an unprecedented breakthrough, a musical and emotional catharsis of immense power. Mark Hollis’ songs exist far outside of the pop idiom, drawing instead on ambient textures, jazz-like arrangements, and avant-garde accents; for all of their intricacy and delicate beauty, compositions like “Inheritance” and “I Believe in You” also possess an elemental strength — Hollis’ oblique lyrics speak to themes of loss and redemption with understated grace, and his hauntingly poignant vocals evoke wrenching spiritual turmoil tempered with unflagging hope. A singular musical experience.

Born in 1942, trumpeter Terumasa Hino has been the leader of Japanese jazz for many decades, and one of the most internationally recognized among Japanese jazz musicians. His technique is amazing and his lyrical and emotional performance is something to behold. Recorded live in concert at Tokyo Yubin Chokin Hall on June 2, 1973, Hino and his quintet clearly showed that they were steeped in the “free” mode of operation, but their performance is engaging and does not leave the audience behind. Wild and unpredictable improvisations coexist with lyrical and rhythmic playing. A brilliant performance with many instances of amazing interplay.

One of the boldest and most powerful 70s albums we’ve heard from trumpeter Terumasa Hino – a live date that rivals the sharp edges and strong lines of his similar album for Enja at the time! The tracks here are all quite long, and mostly show a freely exploratory Hino – one who’s far more experimental than the smoother artist that emerged later in his electric years – and a player with a tremendous range of sounds on the trumpet! Other players include Mikio Masuda on piano and Motohiko Hino on drums – and the album features 2 long tracks that go quite outside, “Stella By Starlight” and “Be & Know” – plus a more lyrical version of “Sweet Lullaby”.

I Robot is the second studio album by English progressive rock band The Alan Parsons Project. The album draws conceptually on author Isaac Asimov’s science fiction Robot trilogy, exploring philosophical themes regarding artificial intelligence.

Alan Parsons delivered a detailed blueprint for his Project on their 1975 debut, Tales of Mystery and Imagination, but it was on its 1977 follow-up, I Robot, that the outfit reached its true potential. Borrowing not just its title but concept from Isaac Asimov’s classic sci-fi Robot trilogy, this album explores many of the philosophies regarding artificial intelligence – will it overtake man, what does it mean to be man, what responsibilities do mechanical beings have to their creators, and so on and so forth – with enough knotty intelligence to make it a seminal text of late-’70s geeks, and while it is also true that appreciating I Robot does require a love of either sci-fi or art rock, it is also true that sci-fi art rock never came any better than this. Compare it to Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds, released just a year after this and demonstrating some clear influence from Parsons: that flirts voraciously with camp, but this, for all of its pomp and circumstance, for all of its overblown arrangements, this is music that’s played deadly serious. Even when the vocal choirs pile up at the end of “Breakdown” or when the Project delves into some tight, glossy white funk on “The Voice,” complete with punctuations from robotic voices and whining slide guitars, there isn’t much sense of fun, but there is a sense of mystery and a sense of drama that can be very absorbing if you’re prepared to give yourself over to it. The most fascinating thing about the album is that the music is restless, shifting from mood to mood within the course of a song, but unlike some art pop there is attention paid to hooks – most notably, of course, on the hit “I Wouldn’t Want to Be Like You,” a tense, paranoid neo-disco rocker that was the APP’s breakthrough. It’s also the closest thing to a concise pop song here – other tunes have plenty of hooks, but they change their tempo and feel quickly, which is what makes this an art rock album instead of a pop album. And while that may not snare in listeners who love the hit (they should turn to Eye in the Sky instead, the Project’s one true pop album), that sense of melody when married to the artistic restlessness and geeky sensibility makes for a unique, compelling album and the one record that truly captures mind and spirit of the Alan Parsons Project.

Without question, the Byrds were one of the great bands of the ’60s and one of the few American bands of their time to continually turn out inventive, compelling albums. As they were recording a series of fine records, they turned out a number of classic singles that unquestionably defined their era. The Byrds’ Greatest Hits does an excellent job of chronicling the peak years of their popularity before they went country-rock on 1968’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo. Apart from the minor hits “It Won’t Be Wrong,” “Set You Free This Time,” and “Have You Seen Her Face,” all of the group’s hit singles – from 1965’s “Mr. Tambourine Man” to 1967’s “My Back Pages” – are included: “All I Really Want to Do,” “Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season),” “Eight Miles High,” “5D (Fifth Dimension),” “Mr. Spaceman,” and “So You Want to Be a Rock N’ Roll Star.” Yes, some great songs were left behind on the albums, but important cuts like “I’ll Feel a Whole Lot Better,” “The Bells of Rhymney,” and “Chimes of Freedom” are added, making this pretty close to a definitive single-disc summary of the Byrds’ prime.

Tracklist:

01 – Mr. Tambourine Man

The world’s largest-ever classical recording contract with one of the most outstanding orchestras, was begun in September 1993 and has been build into a collection of over 150 albums of the world’s best classical music. Our aim is to present the ultimate in quality at an unbeatable price, making ‘The Royal Philharmonic Collection’ the only collection you will ever need.

As a film style, westerns have largely disappeared into the sunset. Modern technology has enabled writers and directors to let their imaginations run away with them, and when you can create the illusion that everybody moves around at the speed of light, directors and special effects have drifted away from a mode of transport which is restricted to a single horsepower!

This is something of a shame, for westerns ruled the roost not too long ago. Okay, so the plot lines were somewhat thin, half the characters had no name and Hollywood’s assessment of America’s heritage showed considerable artistic licence (for example, although everyone in western films bar the funeral director carried a gun, in reality they were extremely expensive and not everyone could afford them). Thankfully, if the budget set aside for the plot was often minimal, the money spent on the music was not. A host of composers have made their name and reputations with some truly memorable songs and tunes, most of which are as instantly recognizable today as they were when first released.

The tracks on this particular album are not only memorable, they are also part of folklore. It is difficult to listen to the opening bars of any of the twelve tracks and not instantly think of Yul Brunner, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughan, Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood, Lome Greene, Henry Fonda et al, all of whom seemed to have played an integral part in cleaning up the West. The themes to films such as The Magnificent Seven, Raw Hide and A Fistful Of Dollars were originally written with full orchestras in mind, and the superb interpretations offered here by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra only add to the ambience.

Much of the credit for this goes to Mike Townend and Carl Davis. Mike, who has arranged the scores to keep faith with the originals and allow the RPO the opportunity to show their virtuosity in equal measure, has already displayed an exceptional ability with some adventurous arrangements, most notably on the Nursery Rhymes album. Carl Davis meanwhile has already done an excellent job in putting the RPO through their paces on three other film-based albums; The World At War, Pride And Prejudice and other Great Themes, Cinema Classics and James Bond Themes. The triumvariate of Mike, Carl and the RPO is an impressive one, as is this album.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra treads where many others have gone before by recording an album of themes from the James Bond movies. In the hands of conductor Carl Davis and arranger Nic Raine, the 12 themes are, for the most part, given subtler, more romantic interpretations than usual. This is not true of the leadoff track, Monty Norman’s “The James Bond Theme,” which actually is taken at a slightly faster tempo than is typical. But “Goldfinger” is slower and more majestic than the well-known hit recording by Shirley Bassey. Although an electric guitar takes the melody line for much of “Live and Let Die,” the Paul McCartney-composed theme is robbed of much of its power by Davis and Raine’s approach, but, for example, Bill Conti’s “For Your Eyes Only,” with its slow, solemn melody, is perfectly suited to it. The conductor and arranger might have been better advised to try different styles appropriate to different themes, but they have created a consistent musical package of music originally written by a large number of composers. Still, there are better albums of these themes.
