The history of rock is scattered with the wreckage of supergroups who turned out to be less than super (and one or two who turned out OK). The Thorns were built in the tradition of the supergroup, though the members are actually less than superstars. Two of the three Thorns, Pete Droge and Shawn Mullins, are best known as one-hit wonders (1994’s “If You Don’t Love Me, I’ll Kill Myself” and 1998’s “Lullaby,” respectively), while the third, Matthew Sweet, has had a career with one great album (1991’s Girlfriend) and a few uneven ones. From their soaring vocal harmonies, chiming guitars, classic rock songs, and plaintive lead vocals, the obvious comparison to make is that The Thorns are a junior-league Crosby, Stills & Nash or a more earnest Traveling Wilburys (with whom they share drummer Jim Keltner). Indeed, comparisons to classic rock acts come easily: America, the Beach Boys, Bread, Crosby, Stills & Nash (no Young), Fleetwood Mac, the Jayhawks (whose “Blue” the band does a near note-perfect cover of on the album), and Tom Petty are clearly influential. The Petty comparison is particularly useful because over half the songs on The Thorns sound like they could have shown up on a recent Tom Petty album. “Long Sweet Summer Ground,” “No Blue Sky,” and especially “Runaway Feeling” have the straight-ahead, chunky rhythm of late-period Petty, as well as the chiming guitars and, above all, the drawled, laconic vocals (Droge at times sounds like he’s channeling Petty’s voice). That reliance on late-period Petty gets wearying, and it sounds at times like the threesome were more interested in replicating a classic rock band than producing any classic tracks. The most successful songs are those that either embrace their influences so fully that they become glorious reproductions or those that dispense with the idol worship altogether. In the first category is “Think It Over,” a sure hit for CSN or America if they had recorded it in the late ’60s or early ’70s that glides along on lush harmonies and a resigned yet hopeful lead vocal, underpinned by a graceful back-porch rhythm and some Beach Boys-style bass harmonica. It also benefits from what many of the songs here lack, a memorable melody. In the second category are two Sweet songs that venture to interesting places outside the group’s somewhat restricted sound. “Thorns” is a fun and bouncy garage rocker that has a bit of attitude and fun; the backing vocals are a real kick. “Now I Know” is a near a cappella song with the group vocals backed by restrained strings. The harmonies, as they are throughout the entire record, are beautiful, and the song is quite affecting and unique. The Thorns have a warm and inviting sound, with entrancing harmonies, but too often there’s no substance behind the sound. In fact, despite the good songs and decent performances, it’s difficult to escape that classic letdown-by-a-super(ish)group-again feeling.

Before release of the Rolling Stones remastered series, ABKCO Records presented this promotional release. This disc contains some “edited” & three differently mastered songs than were pressed on later officially remastered albums.

ABKCO Records released the first compact discs of The Rolling Stones catalog in 1986. Over the years, we have had many requests to re-issue these titles, using the latest digital remastering techniques. While there have been small, incremental improvements in CD mastering and encoding technology over the years, we felt they were not significant enough to justify asking the consumer to re-invest in their entire Rolling Stones collection. Until now.

With the right technology in place, the concept of ABKCO’s “The Rolling Stones Remastered” series was born. Hundreds of hours were spent researching and, more importantly, listening to the analog masters that exist in the vaults. It was a long and painstaking process, involving a quest on both sides of the Atlantic to find the best and purest sources of The Rolling Stones’ work.

When you hear these records, the “rawness” of the guitars, vocal sounds, and the natural distortion that resulted within the original sessions are now more evident than ever. We’re convinced that you need not be an audiophile to appreciate the brilliance afforded these tracks in both SACD and standard CD formats, thanks to Direct Stream Digital (DSD) mastering and the Super Bit Mapping Direct process what you now hear is closer to the band’s actual studio sound.

Originally released in early 1963, Monk’s Dream was the first Thelonious Monk album for Columbia. At the time this was recorded, he had become one of the preeminent figures in contemporary jazz. His move to Columbia put him in the company of a couple of the era’s other major talents and commercial successes, Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck, and his quartet was stabilized for a couple years with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse (with him since 1958), bassist John Ore, and drummer Frankie Dunlop.r-celebrated in its day, Monk’s Dream is rich with the confidence of a band at its peak.

Monk’s Dream is the Columbia Records debut release featuring the Thelonious Monk Quartet: Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), John Ore (bass), and Frankie Dunlop (drums). Jazz scholars and enthusiasts alike also heralded this combo as the best Monk had been involved with for several years. Although he would perform and record supported by various other musicians, the tight – almost telepathic – dimensions that these four shared has rarely been equalled in any genre. By the early ’60s, bop had become considered passé by artists as well as fans looking for the next musical trend. This is coupled with the fact that discerning Monk fans would have undoubtedly recognized many of these titles from several live recordings issued at the end of his tenure on Riverside. Not to belabor the point, however, but precious few musicians understood the layer upon layer of complexities and challenges that Monk’s music created. On tracks such as “Five Spot Blues” and “Bolivar Blues,” Rouse and Dunlop demonstrate their uncanny abilities by squeezing in well-placed instrumental fills, while never getting hit by the unpredictable rhythmic frisbees being tossed about by Monk. Augmenting the six quartet recordings are two solo sides: “Just a Gigolo” and “Body and Soul.” Most notable about Monk’s solo work is how much he retained the same extreme level of intuition throughout the nearly two decades that separate these recordings from his initial renderings in the late ’40s. Monk’s Dream is recommended, with something for every degree of Monk enthusiast.

“Solo Monk” is the eighth album Thelonious Monk originally released for Columbia Records in 1965. The album is composed entirely of solo piano work by Monk. In addition to various vinyl and CD issues, Sony Music issued an SACD in Japan.

The mystery and haunting angular beauty of Thelonious Monk’s unadorned keyboard sides are the focus of Solo Monk. As if holding the history of jazz in his hands, Monk’s solo recordings and performances from every phase of his career remain pure. The components of what made Monk such an uncompromising composer, arranger, and especially bandmember are evident in every note he plays. The disc includes both Monk originals as well as several covers of pop music standards. A majority of these sides were cut during a West Coast swing in late October and early November 1964. This highly productive jaunt would likewise yield two live releases: Live at the It Club and Live at the Jazz Workshop; both would feature Monk’s quartet. On an emotional level, however, these sides arguably surpass many of the band recordings. “Sweet and Lovely” contains several passages that are played with the command and intensity usually demanded of a classical work. The intense yet sophisticated chord progressions that punctuate “Ruby, My Dear” transform what once were simple pop melodies into unaccompanied rhapsodies. Monk transforms the solitude of “Everything Happens to Me” into a minor bop masterpiece replete with his signature disjointed phrasings and variable pacing.

Mulligan Meets Monk is a studio album by American jazz pianist Thelonious Monk and baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan, originally released on Riverside Records in 1957. It was remastered for CD in 1987 (and reissued on SACD in 2004) with three additional alternative takes from the original session.

Mulligan Meets Monk documents the 1957 meeting of two sharp musical minds. Though the pairing may seem unlikely, baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan – whose cool, West Coast style blends dexterity with laid-back grace – and Thelonious Monk – whose radical, angular piano playing and thoroughly modern compositions are blueprints for the possibilities of bop – sound remarkable together. In fact, it is the contrast between the players’ styles that lends this set its balance and appeal. The program, which includes four compositions by Monk and one by Mulligan, is unassailable. Mulligan acquits himself admirably on the Monk classics “‘Round Midnight,” “Rhythm-a-ning,” and “Straight, No Chaser,” unfurling his smooth tone over their zigzagging melodies and ambitious scalar architecture. Mulligan’s “Decidedly,” a bright bop workout, fits easily alongside Monk’s tunes, especially with the help of Monk’s off-kilter, accented comping. Bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Shadow Wilson lend solid support to the spirited playing of the two leaders, making this top-notch session – with its great tunes, chemistry, and soloing – a true classic.

Stockfisch Records # SFR 357.4087.2 | Genre: Folk

44 years after the release of his million-selling hit “Amarillo”, Tony Christie rounds off his long career with a nostalgic trip to his family’s Irish roots – and has produced an Irish folk album of the very highest musical and audio quality. For this project he was able to acquire the services of the band “Ranagri”. 12 of the most beautiful Irish folk classics including for instance „Wild Mountain Thyme“ and „Carrickfergus“, were recorded by Christie and the band in the grammy-nominated Stockfisch Studio in Northeim.

This album is not an idiosyncratic whim dreamed up over a few ‘jars’ at the local pub, but brings to light an aspect of Tony Christie the artist (real name: Anthony Fitzgerald) which many won’t have expected. The songs have profited immensely from the contemporary arrangements, making the ‘golden oldies’ shine with a new brilliance. How this album came about is a story which could only happen to musicians: the year is 1990. A young Irish musician (Donal Rogers) is looking for a good drummer, and following a recommendation he goes to a Tony Christie concert. After the concert he ends up at the house of drummer Sean Fitzgerald, who happens to be the son of Tony Christie. Inevitably the alcohol flows and many stories are told. The power of their common Irish heritage swells up and they sing Irish folk songs til the early hours of the next morning.

This is really Tony Christie’s masterful musical homage to his heritage and his ancestors. For his fans and all other interested parties this album isa very gratifying and uplifting journey to the mysteries of the Irish-Celtic music culture – modern and in excellent sound quality.

Ranagri (pronounced Ran-ag-rye) is a venture from four musicians who have come together to create some exciting new sounds. Consisting of flutes, ethnic flutes, electric harp, bodhran, guitar, bouzouki and vocals, Ranagri fuse worldwide folk music with quality contemporary songwriting, enhanced by virtuosic instrumentals, vibrant rhythms and haunting melodies, all interlaced with vivid storytelling.

Instrumental progressive rock album “Levin Torn White” is the kind of complex, intelligent, and experimental album that makes journeys into the genre rewarding and surprising. “Levin Torn White” is composed of Tony Levin on bass guitar and chapman stick, David Torn on guitar, and Alan White playing drums. On opening track “No Warning Lights”, the calm, unfamiliar background noise gives way to a frantic drum and bass assault that sounds like the Space Mountain ride hurtling to hell. Tracks such as “Ultra Mullett” have an electronic, futuristic pulse that recalls the type of aggressive ambient work Brian Eno created on albums including “Spinner” with Jah Wobble and last year’s “Small Craft on a Milk Sea” with Jon Hopkins. “Convergence” and other tracks have a more meditative and moody atmosphere. Most of the 14 songs on “Levin Torn White” have sudden shifts in tempo and rhythm. Songs like “Prom Night of the Centipede” hurl forward only to abruptly slow down and speed up again. The sudden changes in speed and how carefully they are handled are a testament to the dexterity and skill of these three expert musicians. “Levin Torn White” is a rich, textured instrumental album, and a fine addition to any prog rock fan’s music collection.

In 1973, a new jazz club called “Misty” opened its doors in Tokyo, and young Tsuyoshi Yamamoto became its “house” pianist in January 1974. TBM producer Takeshi Fujii fell in love with Yamamoto’s bluesy and lyrical playing, and decided to record his trio’s first album. Recorded in March 1974, this album would become the “most exported” of all Three Blind Mice (TBM) titles. Beloved by jazz fans all over the world, this disc captures the trio’s brilliant performance in superb sound quality. The of-the-moment realism of Yoshihiko Kannari’s recordings and production aesthetic of producer and label head Takeshi “Tee” Fujii have been the benchmark to match. It earned the Best Engineering Award and Jazz Disc Award of Swing Journal in 1974. Don’t miss out on this opportunity to add this very rare, limited SACD edition to your collection.

The midnight sugar here comes from pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto – who’s playing with a soulful, bluesy sort of style – one that reminds us a bit of Ray Bryant back in the 60s, but which also comes across here with a fair bit of lighter, lyrical touches as well! As with other Three Blind Mice albums from the time, the tracks here are all longish and open-ended – recorded with a nice sort of brightness that breaks from other jazz traditions, and moving in surprising ways at each new twist and turn. The group also features the great Isao Fukui on bass and Tetsujiro Obara on drums – and titles include “I’m A Fool To Want You”, “Midnight Sugar”, “The Nearness Of You”, and “Sweet Georgia Blues”.

As with many conductors of his generation, Karl Böhm had a now-unfashionable liking for a rallentando at the end of an aria, but that pales into insignificance alongside the many virtues of his conducting. The cast is splendid.

bbado’s 1971 Barber is undoubtedly my favourite recording of [Barber. – not least for Teresa Berganza’s tangy Rosina (spirited but never arch) and Luigi Alva’s stylish, nimble Lindoro. Abbado’s pacing of the famous ‘Rossini crescendos’, particularly in the long Act One finale, is masterly, and though it’s a studio recording the wit and charm of the entire undertaking leaps out of the speakers.

The score for La Bohème comes to glowing life under Herbert von Karajan’s baton, and Mirella Freni and Luciano Pavarotti make beautiful music together as the ill-fated lovers. The smaller parts are wonderfully sung, the comedy sharply profiled, and the pathos contained in such a way that the opera’s ending proves remarkably gripping. The disc’s sound is excellent.

Memory has a trick of losing the good, the nice and the normal, and retaining only the oddities, which then swell into grotesque self-caricatures. So, taking a preliminary mental survey of Solti’s Die Zauberfiöte, I recalled stingingly fierce sforzandos in the Overture, accomplished contortions in the Queen of Night’s passage-work, a craggily gigantic Sarastro, and the whole thing punctuated by claps of thunder whose every onset threatened a heart attack. Reality, of course, proves much less extreme. The sforzandos do jab too insistently but as a whole the Overture is finely played, with its due complement of majesty and mystery, energy and grace. Cristina Deutekom certainly produces a curious effect as she juggles with the scales and triplets, slaccati and altissinii of her arias; however, her accuracy and firmness earn gratitude, while the strange cold glitter of her tone characterizes aptly. As for Talvela’s Sarastro, its phrases are often rough-hewn, but there is rich magnificence in the ample range, the notes themselves and the authority of utterance. The thunder, roaring lions and all else in the producer’s effects department take their places quite naturally; and from the background (or what memory had relegated to the background) emerges a wide assortment of pleasures, partly a matter of individual performances, but adding up to a highly viable, competitive account of the opera… Solti’s direction of the opera has sometimes been found too restless; once the Overture is over, I can hear little to substantiate the criticism, whereas his feeling for excitement is a great asset in this opera where a very slight excess of solemnity or relaxation can be deadly.

Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz: Kollo and Behrens are excellently matched as the hero and heroine, and Meven is a splendidly swarthy Kaspar. The recording, which respects Kubelik’s attention to so much of the detail of the score, comes up excellently on CD, not least when the engineers run amok to great effect with all the spookery of the Wolf’s Glen. Cordially recommended.

Il trovatore has always been one of Verdi’s most popular operas, unparalleled in sheer musical energy. Singing the medieval troubadour of the title is legendary tenor Carlo Bergonzi, his only recording of the role. Blessed with Serafin’s lithe, clear, unforced conducting…and a cast all of whose members are Italian.

Karajan takes real care to bring clarity and definition to music that in the wrong hands can leave you wallowing in emotional treacle . . . His graphic handling of orchestral texture brings the world of “Cavalleria” to life, with every nuance of light and colour brought into focus in the playing of La Scala’s orchestra. Cossotto is quite outstanding, surely one of the finest mezzos on record. Here she sings with exquisite pathos and dramatic intensity . . . (Bergonzi) brings instead an elegance that captures something of Turiddu’s duplicitous charm.

Conviction and insight instill this Pagliacci with excitement and real drama. A troupe of actors arrives to give a performance of a commediadell’arte play. The illustration of real love, life and hatred is portrayed in the interplay of Tonio, Silvio, Nedda and her husband Canio. As the two rivals, Caro Bergonzi and Giuseppe Taddei are superb. Taddei’s sinister, hunch-backed clown, gently forcing the play-within-the-play closer to reality until it finally bursts out violently is a masterly assumption, and Karajan controls the slow build-up of tension with a grasp that few conductors could equal. The forces of La Scala, Milan respond wholeheartedly and the 1965 recording sounds well.

Ella Fitzgerald was accompanied by an orchestra arranged by Frank DeVol for this fine studio session. Most of the songs are veteran standards, Stan Getz’s warm tenor helps out on four tunes, and – although this is not an essential release – her voice was so strong and appealing during this era that all of her recordings from the mid- to late ’50s are enjoyable and easily recommended.

Anita O’Day recorded many rewarding albums in the 1950s when her voice was at its strongest, and this collaboration with the Oscar Peterson Quartet (comprised of pianist Peterson, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Ray Brown, and drummer John Poole) may very well be her best. Not only is the backup swinging, giving a Jazz at the Philharmonic feel to some of the songs, but O’Day proves that she could keep up with Peterson. “Them There Eyes” is taken successfully at a ridiculously fast tempo, yet the singer displays a great deal of warmth on such ballads as “We’ll Be Together Again” and “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered.” While Peterson and Ellis have some solos, O’Day is never overshadowed (which is saying a lot) and is clearly inspired by their presence. The very brief playing time is unfortunate on this set, but the high quality definitely makes up for the lack of quantity. A gem.

Sublime early work from Carmen McRae – done with backing from pianist Ray Bryant in a small group setting! Carmen’s singing in a beautifully fragile mode – with only Ray’s piano and a bit of bass and drums to back her up – and it’s a real treat to her the McRae vocal approach in such an unfettered format, because even at this earlier age, Carmen had a sense of control, poise, and grace that shines through immediately.

When originally recorded and released in 1953, Black Coffee was an eight-song catalog of 78s. Three years later, Decca commissioned an LP expansion of the record, for which Lee recorded several more songs.

Peggy Lee left Capitol in 1952 for, among several other reasons, the label’s refusal to let her record and release an exotic, tumultuous version of “Lover.” Lee was certainly no Mitch Miller songbird, content to loosen her gorgeous pipes on any piece of tripe foisted upon her; she was a superb songwriter with a knowledge of production and arrangement gained from work in big bands and from her husband, Dave Barbour (although the two weren’t together at the time). The more open-minded Decca acquiesced to her demand, and watched its investment pay off quickly when the single became her biggest hit in years. Black Coffee was Lee’s next major project. Encouraged by longtime Decca A&R Milt Gabler, she hired a small group including trumpeter Pete Candoli and pianist Jimmy Rowles (two of her favorite sidemen) to record an after-hours jazz project similar in intent and execution to Lee Wiley’s “Manhattan project” of 1950, Night in Manhattan. While the title-track opener of Black Coffee soon separated itself from the LP – to be taught forever after during the first period of any Torch Song 101 class – the album doesn’t keep to its concept very long; Lee is soon enough in a bouncy mood for “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” and very affectionate on “Easy Living.” (If there’s a concept at work here, it’s the vagaries of love.) Listeners should look instead to “It Ain’t Necessarily So” or “Gee, Baby, Ain’t I Good to You?” for more examples of Lee’s quintessentially slow-burn sultriness. Aside from occasionally straying off-concept, however, Black Coffee is an excellent record, spotlighting Lee’s ability to shine with every type of group and in any context.

Tracklist:

01. Black Coffee
02. I’ve Got You Under My Skin
03. Easy Living
04. My Heart Belongs To Daddy
05. It Ain’t Necessarily So
06. Gee Baby, Ain’t I Good To You

08. I Didn’t Know What Time It Was
09. (Ah, The Apple Trees) When The World Was Young
10. Love Me Or Leave Me
11. You’re My Thrill
12. There’s A Small Hotel

Though she eventually came to be known as a “singer’s singer,” Helen Merrill’s 1954 debut is an unmitigated success of mainstream jazz. Besides introducing the uniquely talented young singer, the date also featured small-group arrangements by Quincy Jones and marks the introduction of another future star, trumpeter Clifford Brown. Formidable as his playing is, Brown never overshadows Merrill. She is fully up to the challenge on all fronts and enthusiastically tackles uptempo numbers such as “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” and “Falling in Love with Love” with aplomb. A winning stylistic combination of cool jazz and hard bop, Merrill particularly excels on Mel Tormé’s “Born to Be Blue,” making the sophisticated tune her own as she revels in Tormé’s down-and-out lyric.

Tracklist:

01. Don’t Explain
02. You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To
03. What’s New
04. Falling In Love With Love
05. Yesterdays

Disc 6: Monica Zetterlund with Bill Evans – Waltz For Debby (1964/2016)

An oddity in Bill Evans’ catalog, this 1964 date places the Swedish jazz vocalist Monica Zetterlund alongside the Evans Trio (with Chuck Israels on bass and Larry Bunker on drums). Still, the match is seemingly perfect. Evans’ lyricism is well suited to a breezy, sophisticated songstress like Zetterlund. There is an iciness on this recording, but it is difficult to decipher if it is in the performance or in the engineering where she seems to be way out in front of the band, when she was really in the middle of all the musicians in the studio. This is a minor complaint, however, as the tune selection and decorum of these sessions are quite lovely. From the opener “Come Rain or Come Shine” through the Swedish ballad “A Beautiful Rose” and the achingly gorgeous delivery of “Once Upon a Summertime,” it’s as if Zetterlund were destined to sing with Evans for a career instead of an album. For his part, Evans is very relaxed, allowing the lyrics to feed his musing on the simple, yet elegant harmonics. The Swedish version of “Waltz for Debbie” is a true delight because Zetterlund’s voice becomes another instrument, soloing over the top of Evans’ stunning selection of comping chords. In all this is an odd but special item, one that is necessary – for at least one listen – by any serious fan of the pianist and composer.

Tracklist:

01. Come Rain Or Come Shine
02. Jag Vet En Dejlig Rosa (A Beautiful Rose)
03. Once Upon A Summertime
04. So Long Big Time
05. Monicas Vals (Waltz For Debby)
06. Lucky To Be Me
07. Vindarna Sucka (Sorrow Wind)
08. It Could Happen To You
09. Some Other Time
10. Om Natten (In The Night)

Ella and Louis is an inspired collaboration, masterminded by producer Norman Granz. Both artists were riding high at this stage in their careers, and Granz assembled a stellar quartet of Oscar Peterson (piano), Buddy Rich (drums), Herb Ellis (guitar) and Ray Brown (bass). Equally inspired was the choice of material, with the gruffness of Armstrong’s voice blending like magic with Fitzgerald’s stunningly silky delivery. Outstanding are Irving Berlin’s “Cheek to Cheek” and “Isn’t This a Lovely Day,” and everything else works like a dream, with the golden star going to the Gershwin brothers’ “They Can’t Take That Away from Me.” Gentle and sincere, this is deserving of a place in every home.

These distinctive small-group sessions, featuring Duke Ellington as pianist in a blues context, are part of a group of recordings issued under the confusing titles Back to Back and Side by Side, and further reissued under the not particularly distinctive name of Blues Summit. But there should be no confusion about the high quality of music that came out of these sessions – it is all “cooking with gas” as the expression goes. From the jazz world, it would be difficult to find more profound soloists on traditional blues numbers than the Duke or his longtime collaborator Johnny Hodges, who does some of the most soulful playing of his career here. Also hitting a very high standard for himself is trumpeter Harry Edison and, while musicians are being patted on the back, the Jones boys in the rhythm section should be given a hand. That’s Jo Jones (drums) and Sam Jones (bass), so as not to create additional confusion in the Jones-heavy jazz world. The songs all have titles that end in “Blues,” with the oddball having “Love” in the title not once but twice. (It’s “Loveless Love,” what else?) But these songs are just vehicles for playing the blues, a formula that has produced great music many times, and certainly did every time this particular pianist was leading the group.

Although it has been written much too often that Lester Young declined rapidly from the mid-’40s on, the truth is that when he was healthy, Young played at his very best during the ’50s, adding an emotional intensity to his sound that had not been present during the more carefree days of the ’30s. This classic session, a reunion with pianist Teddy Wilson and drummer Jo Jones (bassist Gene Ramey completes the quartet), finds the great tenor in particularly expressive form. His rendition of “Prisoner of Love” is quite haunting, the version of “All of Me” is also memorable, and all of the swing standards are well worth hearing.

Tracklist:

01. All Of Me
02. Prisoner Of Love

Illinois Jacquet’s honking, screeching tenor saxophone was a cornerstone of the bebop jazz sound but also influenced and inspired two generations of R&B and rock sax players. Jacquet is credited with playing the very first R&B sax solo back when he was a mere teenager in Lionel Hampton’s band. Swing’s The Thing was Jacquet’s debut album on his own, after his stints with Hampton, Cab Calloway, Charles Mingus and Count Basie. Jacquet surrounded himself in the studio with the best of the best session players in jazz at the time and this instrumental album is considered essential listening for Jacquet fans.

Disc 5: Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt, Sonny Rollins – Sonny Side Up (1959/2017)

Esoteric Japan # ESSV-90167

Dizzy Gillespie brings together tenor saxophonists Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins for four extended cuts, and in the process comes up with one of the most exciting “jam session” records in the jazz catalog. While the rhythm section of pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Tommy Bryant, and drummer Charlie Persip provides solid rhythmic support, Stitt and Rollins get down to business trading fours and reeling off solo fireworks. Apparently, Gillespie had stoked the competitive fires before the session with phone calls and some gossip, the fallout of which becomes palpable as the album progresses. On “The Eternal Triangle,” in particular, Stitt and Rollins impress in their roles as tenor titans, with Stitt going in for sheer muscle as that most stout of bebop cutters and Rollins opting for some pacing as a more thematic player. In the midst of the rivalry (certainly some torch was being passed, since Rollins was soon to become the top tenor saxophonist in jazz), an embarrassment of solo riches comes tumbling out of both these men’s horns. Gillespie adds his own split commentary on the proceedings with a casual solo on “After Hours” and a competitively blistering statement on “I Know That You Know.” With an at ease rendition of “On the Sunny Side of the Street” rounding things out, Sonny Side Up comes off as both a highly enjoyable jazz set and something of an approximation of the music’s once-revered live cutting session.

Tracklist:

01. On The Sunny Side Of The Street
02. The Eternal Triangle
03. After Hours
04. I Know That You Know

Recorded on December 19, 1957 at Nola Recording Studio, New York City.

Personnel
Dizzy Gillespie – trumpet, vocals on “1”
Sonny Stitt – tenor saxophone
Sonny Rollins – tenor saxophone
Ray Bryant – piano
Tommy Bryant – double bass

Disc 6: Art Tatum, Ben Webster Quartet – The Tatum Group Masterpieces (1958/2017)
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 42:15 minutes | 1,69 GB
or FLAC Mono (converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/96 kHz | 812 MB
Esoteric Japan # ESSV-90168

The only album-length collaboration between pianist Art Tatum and tenor saxophonist Ben Webster (accompanied by a rhythm section of Red Callender, bass, and Bill Douglass, drums) was this September 11, 1956, session under the auspices of Norman Granz’s Verve Records label. (It was also Tatum’s last recording session before his death.) Granz probably suggested the repertoire of standards by the likes of Kern and Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart, and Cole Porter, but the melodies, of course, only provide a framework. On each track, Tatum leads things off, with Callender and Douglass coming in discreetly (and low in the mix). Then, at a certain point, Webster appears in the foreground, playing comparatively few notes and sticking much more to the melody than his partner. This is a good approach, since Tatum never subsides to simple comping; he just keeps soloing away under Webster’s rich tenor tones until Webster stops playing, and then keeps on to the end. So, although this is billed as a group effort, it’s not a group of equals or really one in which the players are cooperating with each other. Tatum might as well be playing solo, since he takes very little account of what’s happening around him. Granz makes it work by varying the volume of the different instruments in the mix, and the result is a fascinating study in contrasts.

Tracklist:

01. Gone With The Wind
02. All The Things You Are
03. Have You Met Miss Jones?
04. My One And Only Love
05. Night And Day
06. My Ideal
07. Where Or When

Recorded on September 11, 1956 in Los Angeles, CA.

Personnel

Recorded for Riverside, this set mostly features the influential pianist Wynton Kelly in a trio with his fellow rhythm-section mates from the Miles Davis bands, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb. “Kelly Blue” and “Keep It Moving” add cornetist Nat Adderley, flutist Bobby Jaspar and the tenor of Benny Golson to the band for some variety. Kelly was renowned as an accompanist, but as he shows on a set including three of his originals and four familiar standards (including “Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise” and “Willow Weep for Me”), he was also a strong bop-based soloist too. A fine example of his talents.

Tracklist:

01. Kelly Blue
02. Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise
03. On Green Dolphin Street
04. Willow Weep For Me
05. Keep It Moving

Recorded at the Village Vanguard in 1961, shortly before Scott LaFaro’s death, Waltz for Debby is the second album issued from that historic session, and the final one from that legendary trio that also contained drummer Paul Motian. While the Sunday at the Village Vanguard album focused on material where LaFaro soloed prominently, this is far more a portrait of the trio on those dates. Evans chose the material here, and, possibly, in some unconscious way, revealed on these sessions – and the two following LaFaro’s death (Moonbeams and How My Heart Sings!) – a different side of his musical personality that had never been displayed on his earlier solo recordings or during his tenures with Miles Davis and George Russell: Evans was an intensely romantic player, flagrantly emotional, and that is revealed here in spades on tunes such as “My Foolish Heart” and “Detour Ahead.” There is a kind of impressionistic construction to his harmonic architecture that plays off the middle registers and goes deeper into its sonances in order to set into motion numerous melodic fragments simultaneously. The rhythmic intensity that he displayed as a sideman is evident here in “Milestones,” with its muscular shifting time signature and those large, flatted ninths with the right hand. The trio’s most impressive interplay is in “My Romance,” after Evans’ opening moments introducing the changes. Here Motian’s brushwork is delicate, flighty and elegant, and LaFaro controls the dynamic of the tune with his light as a feather pizzicato work and makes Evans’ deeply emotional statements swing effortlessly. Of the many recordings Evans issued, the two Vanguard dates and Explorations are the ultimate expressions of his legendary trio.

Tracklist:

01. My Foolish Heart
02. Waltz For Debby
03. Detour Ahead

On this sizzling live date, guitar great Wes Montgomery is joined by the Wynton Kelly Trio (Wynton Kelly/piano, Paul Chambers/bass and Jimmy Cobb/drums) and the under-rated Johnny Griffin on sax who absolutely tears up this set. Kelly, always a tasteful player, demonstrates his delicate touch while soloing or in support; you could focus your total listening attention on him through the length of the album as he populates the tunes with colourful details. Chambers, who is captured here with great fidelity, takes the opening solo on ‘Cariba’ and is nothing less than captivating. On the steam-rolling ‘S.O.S.’ Johnny Griffin and Wes Montgomery share front-line duties and sparks fly. Griffith’s solo is acrobatic and thrilling which inspires a scintillating turn from Montgomery. The unaccompanied version of ‘I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face”, all creamy surfaces and finesse, is mesmerising, sharing his infectious joy of discovery with the enraptured audience. Throughout the entire album his virtuosity seems effortless, which is why he has been so loved through the decades to the present day.

Tracklist:

01. Full House
02. I’ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face
03. Blue ‘N’ Boogie

Disc 5: Lee Morgan – The Sidewinder (1964/2018)

Carried by its almost impossibly infectious eponymous opening track, The Sidewinder helped foreshadow the sounds of boogaloo and soul-jazz with its healthy R&B influence and Latin tinge. While the rest of the album retreats to a more conventional hard bop sound, Morgan’s compositions are forward-thinking and universally solid. Only 25 at the time of its release, Morgan was accomplished (and perhaps cocky) enough to speak of mentoring the great Joe Henderson, who at 26 was just beginning to play dates with Blue Note after getting out of the military. Henderson makes a major contribution to the album, especially on “Totem Pole,” where his solos showed off his singular style, threatening to upstage Morgan, who is also fairly impressive here. Barry Harris, Bob Cranshaw, and Billy Higgins are all in good form throughout the album as well, and the group works together seamlessly to create an album that crackles with energy while maintaining a stylish flow.

Tracklist:

01. The Sidewinder
02. Totem Pole
03. Gary’s Notebook
04. Boy, What A Night
05. Hocus-Pocus

Recorded on December 21, 1963 at Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey.

Disc 6: The Oscar Peterson Trio – We Get Requests (1964/2018)

Pianist Oscar Peterson has long been such a consistent performer that none of his records are throwaways, but this particular set is weaker than most. Since several of the songs are the type that in the mid-’60s would get requested (such as “People,” “The Girl from Ipanema,” and “The Days of Wine and Roses”), the program would not seem to have much potential, but Peterson mostly uplifts the material (although not much could be done with “People”) and adds a few songs (such as his own “Goodbye, J.D.” and John Lewis’ “D & E”). Overall, this is a reasonably enjoyable Oscar Peterson session, featuring bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen.

Tracklist:

01. Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars (Corcovado)
02. The Days Of Wine And Roses
03. My One And Only Love
04. People
05. Have You Met Miss Jones?
06. You Look Good To Me
07. The Girl From Ipanema
08. D. & E.
09. Time And Again
10. Goodbye J.D.

Recorded at RCA Studios, NYC over October 19 (tracks 1,5,7), October 20 (tracks 2,3,4,6,8,9) and November 19 or 20 (10).

Personnel
Oscar Peterson – piano
Ray Brown – double bass
Ed Thigpen – drums

Russian-born conductor Yakov Kreizberg and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra Amsterdam continue their successful survey of the late, great symphonies of Antonin Dvorák on the PentaTone label. As with other volumes, this installment includes representatives from Dvorák’s output that seem to be at odds with one another. For starters, we have the magnificent, dramatic Seventh Symphony, written very much in the more conservative, Germanic style. This is followed by one of Dvorák’s symphonic poems – The Golden Spinning Wheel, Op. 109 – which some felt contradicted the traditionalist approach of Brahms in favor of more a “programmatic” approach. In truth, listeners will notice a rather dramatic difference between these two works, but this speaks only of Dvorák’s immense flexibility. In both cases, Kreizberg and orchestra do a masterful job of capturing the unique characteristics of both compositions. The Seventh Symphony is played powerfully and with immense drive without seeming exaggerated. Balance within the orchestra is exceptionally well-controlled, allowing the important inner voices to be heard clearly even during full tutti fortissimos. The Golden Spinning Wheel finds Kreizberg delivering fine attention to detail, bringing forth the subtle nuances of the score that are integral to its relationship to the original folk story. PentaTone’s sound is clear, present, and vigorous; listeners using the multichannel SACD track will be further treated to an all-encompassing sound that puts them in the center of the orchestra.

This is a conceptual album which is based on the Danish author H.C. Andersen´s dramaturgy of the story of “The Little Mermaid”, and where the genre is soft jazz with colors Latin rhythms! Most delightfully, the entire album was a audience-less live recording in the Jarna Kulturhus’ Concert Hall with no post-recording dubbing. The result is a dynamically well-balanced work of art infused with high transparency and complex tonality. Though closely miked and hence cast effectively to the front and over the instrumentalists, Yamina’s voice never eclipses her band mates.

Yamina is the new Opus 3 Records Jazz vocalist and some of you may know a little about her, while in the end of 2013, Opus 3 recorded 4 songs with her in native DSD128 which was offered as an ‘EP’ download which was such a success many people asked us when her album is coming!! So the decision was immediate to record on album with her, and here it is! The music of this album is a combination of songs what is normally known as the ‘American Songbook’, plus Yamina’s own compositions. This album contains 12 amazing pieces of music. It is the first album recorded in 8-channel native DSD128 for Opus 3 Records and, of course, mixed 100% analogue, i. e. it has never been in the PCM domain which is also what ‘native’ stands for. This is a ‘live recording’ with no audience, where everybody played together with no overdubs. Released on Sony’s Stereo SACD format this album has outstanding Sound Quality.

Fragile was Yes’ breakthrough album, propelling them in a matter of weeks from a cult act to an international phenomenon; not coincidentally, it also marked the point where all of the elements of the music (and more) that would define their success for more than a decade fell into place fully formed. The science-fiction and fantasy elements that had driven the more successful songs on their preceding record, The Yes Album, were pushed much harder here, and not just in the music but in the packaging of the album:the Roger Dean-designed cover was itself a fascinating creation that seemed to relate to the music and drew the purchaser’s attention in a manner that few records since the heyday of the psychedelic era could match. Having thrown original keyboard player Tony Kaye overboard early in the sessions – principally over his refusal to accept the need for the Moog synthesizer in lieu of his preferred Hammond organ – the band welcomed Rick Wakeman into its ranks. His use of the Moog, among other instruments, coupled with an overall bolder and more aggressive style of playing, opened the way for a harder, hotter sound by the group as a whole; bassist Chris Squire sounds like he’s got his amp turned up to “12,” and Steve Howe’s electric guitars are not far behind, although the group also displayed subtlety where it was needed. The opening minute of “Roundabout,” the album opener – and the basis for the edited single that would reach number 13 on the Billboard charts and get the group onto AM radio in a way that most other prog rock outfits could only look upon with envy – was dominated by Howe’s acoustic guitar and Bill Bruford‘s drums, and only in the middle section did the band show some of what they could do with serious amperage. Elsewhere on the record, as on “South Side of the Sky,” they would sound as though they were ready to leave the ground (and the planet), between the volume and intensity of their playing. “Long Distance Runaround,” which also served as the B-side of the single, was probably the most accessible track here apart from “Roundabout,” but they were both ambitious enough to carry most listeners on to the heavier sides at the core of this long player. The solo tracks by the members were actually a necessity: they needed to get Fragile out in a hurry to cover the cost of the keyboards that Wakeman had added to the group’s sonic arsenal. But they ended up being more than filler. Each member, in effect, took a “bow” in mostly fairly serious settings, and Squire’s “The Fish” and Howe’s “Mood For a Day” pointed directly to future, more substantial projects as well as taking on a life of their own on-stage. If not exactly their peak, Fragile was as perfect a record as the group would ever make, and just as flawless in its timing as its content.

“Performing contemporary music had added immeasurably to the way I play Tchaikovsky’s Concerto,” writes violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter in the liner notes to her 2nd recording of the work in 20 years. To be more precise, what performing contemporary music has added to Mutter’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s concerto is an abrasive tone, an aggressive technique, & an interpretation that treats Tchaikovsky’s tender little concerto as if it were a lover who liked it rough & raw. Although there is no denying Mutter’s virtuosity, her performance is at best willful & at worst wrongful.

“Anne-Sophie makes the structure of Korngold’s piece clearer than anyone else,” writes conductor André Previn in the liner notes of his wife’s performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto. To be more precise, it is Previn who makes the structure clearer, who, indeed, makes this the most persuasive performance of the piece ever recorded. An old hand at the music of Korngold, Previn’s sensitive conducting shapes an ardent but cogent performance, a performance that lets Korngold’s lines sing & soar but always in context of a convincing structure. Mutter, who thankfully has not added any hint of “contemporary music” to Korngold’s neo-Romantic piece, plays with all the subtlety, taste, & beauty of which she is capable. The result is one of the most completely compelling performances of the work ever recorded. Deutsche Grammophon’s sound is transparent with a slight hint of reverberation

After Bill Charlap was “discovered” by the Japanese independent Venus Records with his wonderful debut album for the label ‘S Wonderful, he signed with Blue Note. Because of the contract terms, Charlap’s name can no longer apper prominently on albums he records for Venus. Hence the anonymous moniker “New York Trio”. But make no mistake. This is Bill Charlap’s trio. And what a trio! Veteran Jay Leonhart’s bass sounds deep, lyrical and authoritative, and cutting-edge drummer Bill Stewart’s surprisingly traditional drumming brings a unique tension to this group. This unusual trio has recorded six albums for Venus Records at the pace of one each year, and this is their first of the celebrated series. One of the best interpreters of the Great American Songbook, Charlap dazzles us with his beautiful touch and tone, faithful rendering of original melodies and subtle addition of modern sensibilities. Selections are mostly medium to slow tempo ballads. As the title suggests, this is clearly music for the night.

In the dawn of the 21st century, pianist Bill Charlap took the jazz world by storm with a series of rewarding albums for labels both in the U.S. and abroad. On Blues in the Night, he leads his New York Trio in a recording made for the Japanese label Venus, with veteran bassist Jay Leonhart and fellow young gun Bill Stewart joining him. Right away Charlap signals that he can take an old chestnut into a new direction. His stretched-out, blues-drenched “Blues in the Night” makes effective use of space and showcases his sidemen as well. Leonhart’s buoyant bassline brings to mind the late Milt Hinton in the brisk rendition of “I Could Have Danced All Night.” Charlap’s intense workout of “Blue Skies” is a virtual jazz history lesson, showing the influence of a number of legendary pianists, while achieving a sound distinctly his own. His loping, jaunty approach to “My Funny Valentine” is another winner; equally playful is the snappy waltz treatment of “Tenderly,” accented by Stewart’s brushwork. One of the most promising pianists of his generation, this Charlap album is highly recommended.
