After Service is the second live album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, directly following their (at the time) final studio album, Service. The album features former ABC member David Palmer on additional drums. A film version was released alongside the album. After Service features “Kageki na Shukujo” (過激な淑女 “Radical Lady”), which was released in a studio version as a single, but does not feature on any of their albums (compilations excepted).

BGM is the fourth studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The title stands for “Background music”. This album was produced by Haruomi Hosono. Recording started on January 15, 1981, in an effort to release the album by March 21, 1981. YMO was the first band to use the Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer, one of the first programmable drum machines, as early as 1980. This was their first studio album recorded with the Roland MC-4 Microcomposer and TR-808.

BGM stands for “background music,” and one could be mistaken for thinking that this is an album of ambient-sounding tracks. Instead, it’s a continuation of YMO’s techno aesthetic, focusing more on Takahashi’s distorted vocals and similarly liquid synth sounds, which give much of the album a melancholic air. There’s also the sense of a group rushing to put out another album (close on the heels of Xoo Multiplies). One of Sakamoto’s efforts (“1000 Knives”) comes from his 1978 solo album, revisited here as a twisted blurp of an instrumental; the other (“Happy End”) is all atmosphere and no substance. And YMO’s attempt to understand rap (“Rap Phenomena”) is as plodding as it is embarrassing. However, there are some standout tracks on side two: “Cue” by Hosono and Takahashi is a very assured ballad, given sufficient frisson by its galloping synth line and strangely programmed drums; “U•T” is a Kraftwerk-ian instrumental charged with menace and speed; and “Loom” finally gets to a calm resting place of dripping water, floating electronics, and a Eno-esque atmosphere. If only the first half was a good as the second.

Naughty Boys is the sixth album by Yellow Magic Orchestra, recorded from October 1982 to March 1983. It contains the pop-oriented single “Kimi ni Mune Kyun”, as well as a “preview” of “You’ve Got to Help Yourself”, which was released in its full version on the companion album Naughty Boys Instrumental, and again with vocals on Service. A remix album, Naughty Boys Instrumental contained nearly the entire Naughty Boys album as instrumental tracks in an entirely different running order, as well as the b-side to “Kimi ni, mune kyun.”, “Chaos Panic”; and the full instrumental version of “You’ve Got to Help Yourself”, which was released in “preview” form on the previous album.

Posturing themselves as the synth-pop stars they already were (though only strictly speaking), Naughty Boys is more of a landmark for Japanese pop than electronic music. Beginning with the synth-pop hit “Kimi Ni Mune Kyun” (featuring vocals just as accomplished as its production), the album clearly sounds different; previous YMO material had never sounded explicitly like Asian pop music before. That said, it’s still a solid album of commercial synth-pop and showed the group was still cultivating their Western connections, with help from guitarist Bill Nelson.

Public Pressure is Yellow Magic Orchestra’s first live album. It was their second number-one album in Japan, setting a record of 250,000 copies sold within two weeks of release. It was recorded during three dates of the group’s first tour of Europe and the US.

The group toured as a six-piece, but guitarist Kazumi Watanabe was mixed-out and replaced with more keyboards due to contractual matters between record labels. Un-dubbed recordings from this tour were later released on the album Faker Holic. Most of Yukihiro Takahashi’s vocals were also replaced with those re-recorded afterward in studio. These were not restored on Faker Holic.

The first half of the album was recorded live at The Venue in London. “Cosmic Surfin'” was recorded at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles while second side was recorded at The Bottom Line in New York City by John Venable using the 2nd Generation Record Plant Remote Truck.

Service was the seventh and, at the time, final studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band dissolved the following year after a world tour, but would later reform in 1993 for a one-off reunion album, Technodon. Like ×∞Multiplies, it contains a mixture of YMO songs and comedy sketches performed by Super Eccentric Theater, or S.E.T. The first Dutch/German edition of the album omitted the sketches, effectively cutting the album’s length in half. Service features “You’ve Got to Help Yourself”, which was previously featured in instrumental form on the previous album, Naughty Boys Instrumental. The 2nd “S.E.T.” track featured a sample of Casiopea’s song “Time Limit”. “以心電信” more accurately transliterates to “Telegraph from the heart”.

Technodelic is the fifth studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The album is notable for its experimental and heavy use of digital samplers which were not commonly used until the mid-to-late 1980s, resulting in a more minimalist sound compared to their previous work. It is considered the first released album to feature mostly samples and loops, influencing the heavy use of sampling and looping in popular music. Yellow Magic Orchestra’s approach to sampling music was a precursor to the contemporary approach of constructing music by cutting fragments of sounds and looping them using computer technology.

Widening their vision of synth-pop to include the darker strains of urban/R&B as well as a few vocals indebted to Roxy Music, 1981’s Technodelic proved a high-quality album that showed Yellow Magic Orchestra had the talent and inspiration to grow beyond Kraftwerk-derived electronic pop heavy on the novelty but a bit light on bending genres. Though they aren’t exactly melancholy, “Neue Tanz” and “Pure Jam” distinguish themselves through a clever use of synth and effects rather than through the simplistic melodies of previous work. There are some acknowledgements to acoustic music (such as the piano on “Stairs”), but for the most part YMO pursues a new direction with the same synthesizers they’d been using previously.

×∞Multiplies (増殖 Zōshoku, lit. “multiplication”) was a mini-album and the third studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra released in 1980. It contains a mixture of songs and instrumentals by YMO (including a humorous reworking of Archie Bell & the Drells’ “Tighten Up”), interspersed with comedy sketches. These sketches are performed by Snakeman Show in both Japanese and English, with YMO participating in some of them.

Xoo Multiplies is a bizarre album filled with singalong pop songs, a few interludes including commercial jingles and ad-men pitches, and no less than two versions of the Drells’ chestnut “Tighten Up”. Amid the chaos there are a few solid electronic tunes (“Nice Age”, “Citizens of Science”).

Yellow Magic Orchestra is the first official studio album by Japanese electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra, who were previously known as the Yellow Magic Band. The album was first released in Japan in 1978. It was released in the US on 30 May 1979 by A&M Records on the Horizon label with a new mix by Al Schmitt, new cover art and a slightly different track listing.

The disco bass on “Yellow Magic (Tong Poo)” shows that YMO were beginning to expand their base, but for the most part Yellow Magic Orchestra never strays from its influences.

Solid State Survivor is the second album by Japanese electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra, released in 1979. Solid State Survivor was never released in the United States, but many of the songs from this album were compiled for release in the States as the US pressing of ×∞Multiplies (1980). The album was an early example of synthpop, a genre that the band helped pioneer alongside their earlier album Yellow Magic Orchestra, and it also contributed to the development of techno. Solid State Survivor won the Best Album Award at the 22nd Japan Record Awards, and it sold two million records. Several songs from the album have continued to be widely covered and sampled.

The trio hit their stride with second album Solid State Survivor, a brisk and confident set of synth-disco-pop that continues along the line drawn five years before by Kraftwerk. Fun-loving and breezy where Kraftwerk had been ponderous and statuesque, the album sets out YMO’s template for electronic pop with less minimalism and a more varying use of synthesizer lines. The English lyrics, written by Chris Mosdell but sung by YMO themselves, make for hilarious listening especially on a cover of the Beatles’ “Day Tripper”.

Ryuichi Sakamoto is a Japanese musician, composer, arranger, record producer, writer, singer, pianist, actor, and activist, based in Tokyo and New York. He began his career in the 1970s, first gaining major success in 1978 as a member of electronic music group Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). He concurrently pursued a solo career, releasing the experimental electronic fusion album Thousand Knives. The album is named after Henri Michaux’s description of the feel of using mescaline in Misérable Miracle. It was recorded in about 500 hours, and Sakamoto would spend whole days without sleeping working on it.

Ryuichi Sakamoto’s first solo album appeared before he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in late 1978, after the young keyboardist had earned his M.A. in music from Tokyo University. Six long instrumentals make up this CD, but apart from a taste for Asian-sounding synth lines, they hint at very little of what was to come in YMO. “Thousand Knives” is a long disco-lite jazzy workout with a very un-synthesized guitar solo by Kazumi Watanabe (who would later join YMO on tour and have his solo album produced by Sakamoto). Side two’s “Da Neue Japanische Electronische Volkslied” and “The End of Asia” (later revamped in YMO) are closest to the new wave of Japanese electronic music that he would spawn. “Island of Woods” and “Grasshoppers” trade in rhythm for sound landscapes, and the sort of cheeriness that would pop up later in Sakamoto’s childrens movie scores. Harry Hosono turns up on one track, and generally the album is a pleasant, if unadventurous, listen.

Infinite, a deluxe, limited-edition, audiophile boxed set from Analogue Productions, contains all six legendary albums by The Doors – the self-titled 1967 debut (one of rock’s most important), Strange Days, Waiting For The Sun, The Soft Parade, Morrison Hotel and the visceral L.A. Woman. Each album has been remastered in multichannel for hybrid SACD by Doug Sax and The Doors’ original engineer Bruce Botnick. The surround sound originates from 96K, 24-bit files that were mixed and mastered from the original one-inch, eight track, 15-ips analog master tapes by Bruce Botnick for Elektra’s 2006 DVD Audio release entitled Perception. For the SACDs, those files were then up-sampled without filters to DSD using the Weiss Saracon format converter and authored by Gus Skinas at the Super Audio Center. Infinite is packaged in a unique, high-quality fold-over box that contains extensive notes on each album, nineteen photographs and a 2,700-word essay by The Doors biographer Ben Fong-Torres, esteemed rock journalist and former Rolling Stone editor.

The radio recordings between 1939 and 1945 with the Berliner Philharmoniker and Wilhelm Furtwangler are among classical music’s most compelling sound documents. Created at the peak of the collaboration between orchestra and conductor, Furtwangler’s artist personality is conveyed more vividly than anywhere else. What can be heard is music in which inspiration and the expressive will know no bounds and in which, not least, the existential experience of the Second World War reverberates. For the first time, the Berliner Philharmoniker are releasing a complete edition of these recordings.

At the end of World War 2 the Red Army occupied Nazi Berlin, and in the Haus des Rundfunks on Masurenallee a musically literate Soviet officer called Konstantin Adzhemov took from the sound archives around 1,500 classical music tapes that were sent back to Moscow. In 1956 some of these recordings started to appear as LP releases on Melodiya, the Soviet State record label. Klaus Lang, music editor at Sender Freies Berlin (SFB), had talks with the Moscow Radio department about the missing tapes and subsequently some copies of the Furtwängler recordings were returned, a number with reverberation added. Deutsche Grammophon issued some of these recordings on 10 CDs. In 1990, following the fall of Communism and German unification, SFB requested the repatriation of the original tapes. As a gesture of goodwill, a considerable number of the RRG tapes were returned up to 1991 but some were absent; this is still the current position.

This collection The Radio Recordings 1939–1945 is intended to allow the listener to experience the Berliner Philharmoniker in collaboration with Wilhelm Furtwängler, the conductor the players revered so much. Owing to the period these were produced they are sometimes described as the “war recordings” and are greatly prized, being regarded as the peak of Furtwängler’s conducting career. In addition, these historical performances were recorded with the added pressure and threat of working in Nazi Germany with great emphasis placed on music performance from the Third Reich leadership. Not surprisingly, the majority of the recordings focus on Austro/German repertoire of the 19th century, with symphonies and solo concertos by Beethoven, Schubert, Weber, Schumann, Wagner, Brahms, Bruckner and Richard Strauss plus some Handel, Gluck and Mozart. Sibelius and Ravel are also represented, as are a few of then-contemporary composers, Heinz Schumann, Pepping and a work from Furtwängler himself. There is some duplication, notably Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 and Beethoven’s Symphonies no’s. 4 and 5. Given the difficulties of the time the incomplete concerts aren’t too much of a problem; however, a couple of the works are incomplete. When the old Philharmonie was destroyed by bombing on 30th January 1944 the orchestra moved around a number of other Berlin buildings suitable for holding concerts and included here are recordings from Beethoven-Saal, Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Admiralspalast, also Haus des Rundfunks and a workers concert at AEG turbine factory.

The majority of the Furtwängler recordings on this edition were produced under sound engineer Dr. Friedrich Schnapp who in October 1939 succeeded Kurt Rasch. Schnapp went on to supervise Furtwängler’s radio broadcasts until the end of the war. Commencing in the 1940/41 season the concerts were no longer transmitted live but recorded earlier, for Sunday radio broadcast. A procedure sometimes followed was to choose the best of the three concerts in the series and also in rehearsal which were chosen for broadcast. Some of the original shellac discs and tapes were probably lost in a fire whilst in storage by the RRG and this is probably the reason why some of the concerts presented here are incomplete. Usually, from the original raw concert recordings, a new tape was made and edited then copied onto transmission tapes which were then used for broadcast. For this edition sound engineer Nikolaus Löwe remastered the original RRG tapes scored at RRB which hadn’t been worked on since 1991. Using a retrofitted Telefunken M19 tape machine Löwe digitized them in high resolution at 24bit/96kHz. A small number of the tapes seem to have lessened in quality since 1991 but the sound engineers have stated that “the vast majority showed a distinct improvement in the direct digital copy”.

Award-winning violinist Akiko Suwanai is backed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo for this recording of compositional works by Sibelius and Walton. In 1990, Suwanai was the youngest winner of the International Tchaikovsky Competition following a second place award in the Queen Elizabeth Music Competition in 1989. The performances display warm virtuosity, captured with brilliant sound quality.

Award-winning violinist Akiko Suwanai is backed by the City of Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit for this recording of compositional works by Saint-Saëns, Lalo, Chausson, Kreisler, Berlioz, and Ravel. This music here is a collection of pieces that fall just short of “major” concertos (more like encore pieces) though Akiko Suwanai does them full justice!!!! Particularly, the Saint-Saens “Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso” and Ravel’s “Tzigane” are top notch. Ms. Suwanai plays with a great deal of warmth, personality, and maturity that allows her Strad to really sing! The recording is top notch, with the violin a bit forward and the orchestra back a ways.

Now for something completely different! Äkta (ék tuh), a Swedish word meaning “genuine” or “true”, is the name of this fiddle ensemble from Minnesota dedicated to the keeping of traditional Swedish music. That’s what we have here – three folk fiddlers, a guitarist and a bassist – genuine Swedish folk musicians, except they are young Americans who when asked if they wanted to dress up in traditional costumes for the cover photo answered in unison, “NO!” They learned the music the traditional way, by listening and playing every week at Swedish gatherings. They have also performed at an annual National Folk Festival in Michigan. There are 17 short tracks here, many of them polkas, with a march and a couple waltzes. The musical skills of these amateurs are apparent, and the clarity and realism of the multichannel recording helps pick out the individual instruments and immerse yourself in the music. However, not being Swedish myself or heavily into traditional music, I found the tunes, rhythms and key signatures all very similar from one track to another and became a little too immersed before getting to the end of the disc.

The doyen of Hindustani music, and one of the world’s greatest musicians, creates four spellbinding rags that are destined to become part of the world’s musical heritage. The son of influential Hindustani musician Allaudin Khan, Ali Akbar Khan was one of the Eastern world’s greatest musicians. A master of the sarod, a 25-stringed, lute-like, Indian instrument, Khan brought the Northern Indian classical music to the international stage. A five-time Grammy nominee, Khan was called, by Yehudi Menuhin, “an absolute genius, the greatest musician in the world”.

Ali Akbar Kahn is a master of Indian classical music. His main mojo making machine is the sarod which you can see pictured in the album cover’s art. Indian Architexture is a stunning recording of Ali Akbar Khan playing his sarod with tabla accompaniment by Swapan Chaudhuri. Together they present four ragas each nearly a half hour in duration. Originally released and recorded by Waterlily Acoustics, you can think of Indian Architexture as a spiritual journey in sound, a meditation, spritely ambient drone, minimalist music maximized, background music for practical flights of fancy, foreground music for awakening, or simply L’invitation au voyage.
If you take the time to listen to one or two or four of these ragas uninterrupted, imagine that!, I guarantee you will be breathing easier at their conclusion. I don’t really have much more to say except to say I find this music to be beautiful and capable of dissolving the thinking machine that rarely seems to rest otherwise.
