Too many releases in the relaxation/environmental market feel compelled to accompany their nature recordings with beds of flutes, oozing synths, or chattering forest animals. Luckily Dan Gibson takes the opposite approach. His Ocean Surf is exactly that, a 70-minute-plus track featuring nothing but pristinely recorded surf, tide, and whitecaps. From the first moments when Dexter Gordon sails into the opening song full of brightness and confidence, it is obvious that Go! is going to be one of those albums where everything just seems to come together magically. A stellar quartet including the stylish pianist Sonny Clark, the agile drummer Billy Higgins, and the solid yet flexible bassist Butch Warren are absolutely crucial in making this album work, but it is still Gordon who shines. Whether he is dropping quotes into “Three O’Clock in the Morning” or running around with spritely bop phrases in “Cheese Cake,” the album pops and crackles with energy and exuberance. Beautiful ballads like “I Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry” metamorphosize that energy into emotion and passion, but you can still see it there nonetheless. Gordon had many high points in his five decade-long career, but this is certainly the peak of it all.

Astor Piazzolla become hugely popular thanks to his ‘tango nuevo’ band and his short tango pieces. This disc shows his other, more serious side in some of his symphonic music, still mostly inspired by tango rhythms and catchy tunes. It is a great joy to have this music so well recorded and performed, and if you like Piazzolla’s music, you should definitely check this one out.

Piazzolla wanted to be a ‘serious’ classical composer and ready to throw away his Argentinian musical heritage, but under the influence of Nadia Boulanger he used his tangos to create some truly original and engaging symphonic music. The best example for that is the first piece, Tangazo, which meanders between Bartok, Stravinsky, Shostakovich and many others till it turns all powers of full symphony orchestra into a truly magnificent tango-like theme. The rest is just as brilliant.
Three symphonic tangos are more like what we would expect from this composer, in a regular exchange between the orchestra and solo groups. “Milonga del Angel” is probably my favourite of all Piazzolla’s tangos, and even if it looses some of it’s edge in a full orchestral version, it gains some other aspects, it sounds HUGE and even more sensual.
Last piece, sinfonietta, is the earliest composed piece on here, from 1953, written before Boulanger’s advice. Piazzolla is exiting as ever, the music swings wildly around solo clarinet jazzy tune, with dance rhythms always present. The slow movement is a sombre grieving tune, owing much of its musical language to Bartok’s “Music for strings, percussions and celesta”. The finale is still in Bartok’s domain, but with ever present rhythmic twists and turns and unusual colours. It is definitely the piece you wouldn’t expect from a tango master.
Recording is (like all other Chandos SACDs) fantastic, orchestra’s sound is solid and detailed, stage huge (in surround), solo passages focused and clear, dynamic range natural. As I said, if you like Piazzolla and feel like exploring more, go for it. This disc is a perfect accompaniment to his chamber-tango discography.

Laura Fygi is a Dutch singer. Between 1984 and 1991, Laura Fygi was a member of one of the most popular Dutch girl-bands, Centerfold, known for their hit “Dictator”. During performances, the ladies dressed themselves in sexy lingerie. They had hits in the Netherlands and all over Europe. They were big in Japan. In 1991, the ladies of Centerfold stopped performing and Laura going to solo career and released more than 12 CDs, and has performed throughout Europe, South America and Asia. As a Dutch singer, she even managed to conquer the Chinese market, a unique achievement.

What is the secret of her success? It is the combination of a number of things. First of all she has a husky voice with a beautiful diction and great timing, which has already been compared to that of Peggy Lee, and the intimacy of Julie London . She has an international appearance which enables her to perform in Ronnie Scott ‘s Jazz club in Soho with the same ease as on the biggest stages in most of the world cities. She looks beautiful and is as Latin as Jazzy . But the most important thing Laura is a storyteller, someone who knows how to turn a song into a story that touches you directly from her heart to yours. While it still swings like crazy!

Like Joe Pass’ Virtuoso series, Artistry is a vehicle for Taylor’s amazing technical ability. His transcriptions, particularly “Georgia On My Mind,” are superb, but occasionally his playing feels cluttered, as he squeezes in too many details. Elsewhere he is terrific: “Teach Me Tonight” is subtle and swinging, and “The Dolphin” features an astonishing range of colors, from simultaneous chordal and single-note runs to harp imitations that are surprisingly true. It doesn’t provide the pure pleasure of his work with Stephan Grapelli (where he is clearly most inspired), but Artistry is a great example of Taylor’s incredibly refined, creative guitar work.

Jazz guitarist Martin Taylor and rock guitarist Steve Howe would seem an unlikely pair to make a CD together, but they had an opportunity, thanks to the generosity of a fan with a wide-ranging collection of vintage collectable guitars. In 1996, the two guitarists gathered over the course of several sessions and chose various instruments, often using several within one track via overdubbing. The two guitarists play together on just five of the 17 tracks, with Taylor playing ten solos and Howe two. Taylor’s unusual setting of Kenny Dorham’s “Blue Bossa” incorporates one guitar for rhythm, while he switches off among 18 other instruments for the solo. His setting of “All the Things You Are” adds a surprising lyrical introduction, while the arrangement contrasts with the typically over the top bop recordings. Howe’s spacious “Tailpiece” suggests a lonely journey in the desert. Taylor also penned several originals, including the tasty bossa nova “Cherokee Ridge.” Among the duo features, the enchanting, understated interpretation of “Smile” has a special appeal. This session will be of special interest to guitarists, though anyone familiar with either Martin Taylor or Steve Howe ought to investigate this enjoyable release.

When Kevin Godley and Lol Creme left 10cc in 1976 to pursue a solo career, many thought it was the death knell for the group. However, Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman kept the group alive as a duo (with the assistance of percussionist Paul Burgess) and turned in a surprisingly solid album with 1977’s Deceptive Bends. It may lack the devil-may-care wackiness that popped up on previous 10cc albums, but it makes up for it by crafting a series of lush, catchy pop songs that are witty in their own right. Deceptive Bends also produced a pair of notable hits for the group: “Good Morning Judge” told the comical tale of a career criminal over a hook-laden, surprisingly funky pop backing while “The Things We Do for Love” was an irresistible Beatles pastiche that showcased 10cc’s mastery of pop vocal harmonies. “People in Love,” a surprisingly straightforward ballad built on a gorgeous string arrangement, also became a modest chart success. The remainder of the material doesn’t stand out as sharply as these hits, but each of the tracks offers up plenty of naggingly catchy pop hooks, oodles of catchy riffs, and surprising twists in their arrangements. Highlights among the non-hit tracks include “Marriage Bureau Rendezvous,” a satire of dating services set to a lilting soft rock melody, and “You’ve Got a Cold,” a portrait of illness-influenced misery set to a percolating pop melody. The only place where Deceptive Bends slips is on “Feel the Benefit,” the lengthy medley that closes the album. Its excessive length and hazy lyrics make it less satisfying than the album’s shorter tunes, but it is kept afloat by a catchy, mock-Spanish midsection and some lovely string arrangements. All in all, Deceptive Bends is the finest achievement of 10cc’s post-Godley and Creme lineup and well worth a spin for anyone who enjoyed Sheet Music or The Original Soundtrack.

10cc’s third album, The Original Soundtrack, finally scored them a major hit in the United States, and rightly so; “I’m Not in Love” walked a fine line between self-pity and self-parody with its weepy tale of a boy who isn’t in love (really!), and the marvelously lush production and breathy vocals allowed the tune to work beautifully either as a sly joke or at face value. The album’s opener, “Une Nuit a Paris,” was nearly as marvelous; a sly and often hilarious extended parody of both cinematic stereotypes of life and love in France and overblown European pop. And side one’s closer, “Blackmail,” was a witty tale of sex and extortion gone wrong, with a superb guitar solo embroidering the ride-out. That’s all on side one; side two, however, is a bit spottier, with two undistinguished tunes, “Brand New Day” and “Flying Junk,” nearly dragging the proceedings to a halt before the band rallied the troops for a happy ending with the hilarious “The Film of Our Love.” The Original Soundtrack’s best moments rank with the finest work 10cc ever released; however, at the same time it also displayed what was to become their Achilles’ heel — the inability to make an entire album as strong and memorable as those moments.

Since 1960 the composer Arne Nordheim has enchanted both musicians and audience with a unique soundscape. His music may be considered a source to the later Nordic Sound of electronica. Today’s DJs might not willingly announce “Grandfather taught me this”, but that’s actually the case!
Nordheim’s music is recently re-vitalized by publications like Dodeka and Electric by the renowned Norwegian label Rune Grammofon, and Nordheim Transformed by Biosphere/Deathprod. CIKADA and 2L now bring you the world premiere recording in surround sound, as originally intended by the composer.
CIKADA DUO is Kenneth Karlsson (piano/synthesizer) and Bjørn Rabben (percussion). They are joined by Åke Parmerud (elektronics) and Elisabeth Holmertz (soprano) in this production of Arne Nordheim’s music. Take the stand within the percussion and let yourself be embraced by electronica, vocal and synthesizers in an extreme surround sound recording, produced by the GRAMMY-nominated Lindberg Lyd.

I’m familiar with two other major interpretations on RBCD of the Copland ballets: Bernstein’s with NY Phil and Slatkin’s with St. Louis. While the Slatkin rendition was very satisfying in its simple approach, Morton Gould and his orchestra play these works as if it were for an old classic western movie. The style is very old fashioned but highly effective, and listening made me feel nostalgic even though I’m too young to have grown up in that just-after-WWII era. The Grand Canyon Suite by Grofe has that same cozy nostalgic feel further enhanced by some UNusual instrument placement and editing. A serious recording technician would probably laugh at the approach used by this orchestra and Living Stereo, but to me it’s a silly but highly enjoyable masterpiece. The SACD Stereo sound is fantastic, and this is one of my SACD Top Picks! sacd_fan @ SA-CD.net

The San Francisco Bay Area rock scene of the late ’60s was one that encouraged radical experimentation and discouraged the type of mindless conformity that’s often plagued corporate rock. When one considers just how different Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, and the Grateful Dead sounded, it becomes obvious just how much it was encouraged. In the mid-’90s, an album as eclectic as Abraxas would be considered a marketing exec’s worst nightmare. But at the dawn of the 1970s, this unorthodox mix of rock, jazz, salsa, and blues proved quite successful. Whether adding rock elements to salsa king Tito Puente’s “Oye Como Va,” embracing instrumental jazz-rock on “Incident at Neshabur” and “Samba Pa Ti,” or tackling moody blues-rock on Fleetwood Mac’s “Black Magic Woman,” the band keeps things unpredictable yet cohesive. Many of the Santana albums that came out in the ’70s are worth acquiring, but for novices, Abraxas is an excellent place to start.

This is not exactly the Mario Lanza “best-of” album its title might imply; it consists of recordings made during the last 18 months of the great crossover tenor’s life, when he was beginning to suffer serious effects from the health problems that killed him in the fall of 1959. Still, it’s hard to hear much of an effect from those problems — a diminution of sheer vocal power in the selections from Rudolf Friml’s musical The Vagabond King that make up the second half of the disc, perhaps, but no loss of the singer’s broad, generous lyric impulse. Lanza was an operatic star who never quite got the chance to be an opera star. He took the lead role in the biopic The Great Caruso and sang Italian songs like those heard on the first half of the disc, but substance abuse brought him down just as he was preparing a sustained effort to reach the operatic stage. It’s hard to imagine a career like his flourishing in the present day: there’s plenty of crossover music, certainly, but no place in the pop world for a singer with a big Italian voice. After you hear this album, you’ll feel that’s a shame. The Neapolitan songs that open the disc are period pieces; a few of them have cheesy wordless backing choruses and odd arrangements with extended harmonies, drawn from the language of musical comedy, that don’t quite fit. Still, they’re nothing less than irresistible. On the Vagabond King selections, a few unreleased tracks from soprano Judith Raskin are added to make a rough outline of the whole show. The opening “Drinking Song” may cause one to wish that Lanza hadn’t been so quick to affirm that “a flagon of wine will do.” But sample the “Nocturne” and see if you don’t agree that it’s one of the great love serenades on records. RCA’s Living Stereo sound was a major engineering accomplishment in the beginning, and the SACD remastering here is stupendous — as good as it gets. Every bit of orchestral detail is there in total clarity. Check this album out and learn why an operatic singer was once at the top of the pop charts.
