Wind & Wuthering followed quickly on the heels of A Trick of the Tail and they’re very much cut from the same cloth, working the same English eccentric ground that was the group’s stock in trade since Trespass. But if A Trick of the Tail played like Genesis’ attempt at crafting a great Genesis record without Peter Gabriel, as a way of finding their footing as a quartet, Wind & Wuthering finds Genesis tentatively figuring out what their identity will be in this new phase of their career. The most obvious indication of this is Mike Rutherford’s “Your Own Special Way,” which is both the poppiest tune the group had cut and also the first that could qualify as a love song. It stands out on a record that is, apart from that, a standard Genesis record, but quite a good one in that regard.

– Heavy pop rock with lots of electronic soundscapes. Branko blends the electric 80’s with the grungy 90’s. –

Welcome to the electric world of BRANKO: a new band with a fresh sound and a clear focus on the good old craftsmanship of writing pop songs with a twist. However new…..? The pop-rockers of Branko have all individually left their tracks in rock ‘n roll land, and now they have joined forces……

Branko was conceived by lead singer and producer Jacko Kreukniet. Together with soul mate Ben Franswa, also a former band member in the promising group Spitball, he worked on Branko’s debut album for two long years. Already in an early stage Branko was adopted by producer, mentor and former Urban Dance Squad drummer Michel Schoots, who clearly recognised and sponsored the potential of their music and even ended up drumming on the album. During the recording process old friends Marcel Singor (guitars) and Ivar Pijper (keys) added their essential flavours to the album and later on joined the band. Bas Hebing (drums) was the last member to join and very eagerly took the offered drum seat.

Supported by some very important ‘behind the scenes’ members of the rapid growing Branko-family, the band managed to produce an album with a true LP-vibe. Twelve strong songs under the title ‘My World Electric’, each with their own particular character but yet forming an unmistakable coherence. At the end of the album making process, Jacko travelled to Los Angeles to team up with a one of the newest members to join the Branko-family: mixing engineer Brad Gilderman. This celebrated technician, who already worked with US artists like Outkast, Brian Wilson en Tom Petty, mixed the album in his Little Big Room Studio and did a great job….. Besides being a huge fan of the band and a terrific person to work with, Brad definitely contributed to the genuine album feel and added a competitive and professional sound.

Jacques Loussier has made a career out of playing classical themes in a jazz setting. Born in France in 1934, he came to fame in the late 1950s with his Play Bach Trio, a group that stayed together 20 years, transforming the themes of Bach into creative and melodic jazz. Since then he has put together another trio in which he interprets not just the music of Bach but Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel, Satie and other classical giants. This set (which is subtitled Impressions on Chopin’s Nocturnes) is a bit of a departure in that Loussier performs Frédéric Chopin’s 21 nocturnes as unaccompanied piano solos. Nocturne No. 2 in E-Flat Major, Op, 9., No. 2 is the most famous of these melodies although a few of the other nocturnes may be familiar even to non-classical listeners. Generally Loussier states the right-hand melody while altering the patterns written for the left-hand, and then builds from there. The essence of Chopin’s music is retained while Loussier is free to improvise his own ideas based on the themes. Most of his interpretations are gentle and subtle while never neglecting the rich melodies, and the treatments are at times slightly reminiscent of early film music and ragtime. Classical purists may not love this approach but they should be thankful, for Jacques Loussier has consistently introduced the beauty of classical music to jazz listeners. This is a very enjoyable set.

Jacques Loussier came up with his Play Bach jazz conceptions while still in the conservatory around 1950. He started recording them in 1959, and he’s been at it ever since, adapting other classical composers along the way, but always returning to Bach. It made sense then, and it makes sense now, for Bach’s linear, continuo-driven, contrapuntal style has always implied a swinging pulse; even some inspired, if strictly score-bound classical recordings of Bach sound as if they are poised for takeoff. These recordings are not the originals, though; they are remakes made in France in the mid-’90s (from Plays Bach and The Bach Book) and compiled by Telarc a decade later to coincide with Loussier’s 70th birthday year. No real surprises here; the repertory is mostly basic-repertoire Bach favorites, which Loussier alternates straight classical playing with straight-ahead, elegant, rhythm-shifting jazz elaborations for jazz piano trio. The main difference between the 1990s Loussier and his best-sellers from decades before is his willingness to occasionally update his adaptations with newer rhythms that didn’t exist then (check out the playfully funky Gavotte in D from the Orchestral Suite No. 3). Nevertheless, listeners are so used to hearing Bach peddled in so many different idioms and wardrobes that it is impossible to hear anything radical in this concept anymore — and certainly not since fellow pianist Uri Caine’s wacky, eclectic Goldberg Variations raised the bar for outrageously entertaining Bach adaptations in 2000. Nothing much to report about the surround mix — basically room ambience in the rear channels. But the piano has an appealingly robust, full-bodied timbre in SACD, more like that of a live instrument than on the original CDs, though the drums register more clearly on CD. This was released only as a hybrid SACD disc — Telarc’s first experiment with a single inventory title — so don’t go hunting for a stereo CD-only version; it doesn’t exist.

Ten mostly ballads, played in a super-relaxed fashion and reproduced with a realism in hi-res surround that fulfills the label’s slogan.

What a totally delightful laid-back jazz quartet outing! No free jazz, no unwhistlable tunes, no overpowering drums (in spite of Cobb being the leader) – just ten mostly ballads, played in a super-relaxed fashion and reproduced with a realism in hi-res surround that fulfills the label’s slogan of “You can hear the difference.” Right up my alley.

Cobb and the producers selected mostly standards that they thought Hargrove would like to play and would sound good playing. They’re also not the same tunes we seem to be hearing over and over on so many jazz releases. Hargrove is a terrific trumpeter and never strains for effect; he is ably supported by guitarist Malone. One never misses the presence of a piano in the band. There are two tunes in ¾ time: Billy Preston’s With You I’m Born Again, and Johnny Mandel’s Emily. Hargrove really shines on the rather serious treatment of Stairway to the Stars, and the tempo is picked up considerably for I Had the Craziest Dream.

Chesky’s surround offers often astonishing presence and realism, with the players obviously performing in a very natural slightly-reverberant space (a church in NYC). The effect is quite a contrast from the usual studio recording, with each player cordoned off behind soundproofed partitions and wearing headphones. That may be OK for the typical overly-compressed, unnaturally boosted solo pickups of instruments heard on most two-channel jazz and pop recordings, but it would ruin the very natural spatial relationship of the performers on this hi-res surround disc. Chesky includes a diagram of where the four players and the Soundfield mike are located, like many Japanese audiophile discs. I got a kick out of their note that one may hear Hargrove’s trumpet changing places from track to track because sometimes he just felt like moving around.
Another audio aspect to the success of this session is Cobbs’ use of only brushes on nearly every track. The 80-year-old drummer is one of the very few in the biz who plays the drums like a real musical instrument and not a noisemaker.

An influential New York City-based singer-songwriter, with a powerful, soulful voice who bridged the gaps bewteen folk, pop, and soul.

Angel in the Dark is a lovely recording featuring the graceful vocals and finely crafted songs that everyone expects from Laura Nyro. These sessions were completed in the summer of 1995 and represent the last music Nyro recorded. The title cut and “Sweet Dream Fade” mine the same soul terrain as her late ’60s recordings, featuring horns and underlined by heavy guitar riffs. These upbeat pieces perfectly integrate voice, arrangements, and lyrics to create an organic whole, and are two of the best cuts on the album. Slower, piano-based songs like “Triple Goddess Twilight,” “He Was Too Good to Me,” and “Serious Playground” are mixed in-between these songs. These pieces are quieter and introspective, with Nyro’s voice more intimate. It is almost as though she was sitting at the piano, late at night, and singing to herself. There are also several covers including “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and “Let It Be Me.” The first of these is over five minutes and has been slowed down so much that it drags. In fact, she slows down all of the covers as if to convert them into heartfelt ballads. This works best on “Ooh Baby, Baby,” partly because the arrangement is fuller and more dynamic. One other standout is the upbeat “Gardenia Talk,” filled with lively percussion and a sensual vocal. Angel in the Dark is a fine coda, perfect for late-night listening, and a perfect companion to Nyro’s other recordings.

Audacious on his rhymes and indulgent with his appetites, Ludacris may flaunt the cartoonish side of his personality, but he isn’t just another unreconstructed Southern rapper. Chicken -N- Beer, his third album (to go along with dozens of guest spots), shows a rapper balancing the weed, women, and fried chicken with shots at those who’ve crossed him and a look at a few celebrity perils, delivered with his lightning-quick phrasing and cutting wit. That he’s able to harness all this to his usual rollicking, all-in-good-fun persona is a testament to the best rapper in the business, one of the few who’s actually celebrating something — and having a great time doing it. The steamy sex rap “Stand Up” may be the hit single, but most of the highlights here come toward the end, where Luda invites friends and family for some uproarious tracks — producer Erick Sermon on the surrealist dozens of “Hip Hop Quotables,” Snoop Dogg on a hilarious tale of the night after the show, “Hoes in My Room” (as in “Who let these hoes in my room?”), and Disturbing tha Peace partners Chingy, I-20, and Tity Boi on the hardcore gunshot “We Got.” Ludacris also has a response for the doubters, on the first full track (“Blow It Out”), proclaiming, “If you mad I’m on top, then wish me gone/If you mad I’m on the road, then wish me home/And if you mad that I’m right, punk, wish me wrong/But after your third wish, blow it out your ass.” And, as expected, he gets in a few digs at Bill O’Reilly, the FOX News personality who objected to him as a “thug rapper” when hired for a Pepsi ad campaign (apparently, O’Reilly is the culprit behind “Hoes in My Room”). He may not be ready for that Pepsi spot (much less a shot at prime time), but Ludacris made the best record of his career with Chicken -N- Beer.

In 1974, Quincy Jones, who already had a wide range of musical credits behind him, opted to enter the R&B mainstream by hiring vocalists and overseeing recordings in a commercial vein released under his name. The first of them was Body Heat, which went gold, and Jones followed with a series of records including 1981’s million-selling The Dude and the 1990 Album of the Year Grammy-winner Back on the Block. Meanwhile, he switched record labels, leaving A&M for his own Warner-distributed Qwest in the early ’80s. That has tended to make the assembly of a comprehensive best-of difficult, but Universal’s Hip-O reissue division specializes in licensing material from other labels to construct its Ultimate Collection releases, and this one borrows seven out of 18 tracks from Qwest to add to Jones’ A&M hits, making it the definitive one-disc compilation of Jones’ pop/R&B recordings of 1974-1999. Jones himself participated in the selection, which does not strictly follow chart rankings, since a couple of R&B Top 20 hits (“I Don’t Go for That” and “Slow Jams”) are missing, while a few non-chart items are included. To get more songs in, the singles edits have been used in many cases. But all the major hits are here. The chronological sequencing allows an appreciation of how Jones’ approach changed over the years. The ’70s stuff, which holds up surprisingly well, is tasty R&B, much of it groove-oriented, up-tempo music. By the late ’80s, however, there are a lot of big, bland ballads that showcase superstar vocalists (Ray Charles, Barry White, etc.) and sound self-important. Like his protégé, Michael Jackson, who went from the rocking “Billie Jean” to the messianic “Man in the Mirror” in the same period, Jones seems to have begun believing his press clippings, and his work suffered accordingly.

She’s So Unusual is the debut studio album by American pop singer-songwriter Cyndi Lauper. Released in 1983 by Portrait Records, the album catapulted Lauper to stardom with such hits as “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”, “Time After Time”, “She Bop”, “All Through the Night”, and “Money Changes Everything”. All five singles reached the top thirty of the Billboard Hot 100, with first four singles of them becoming Top 5 hits. Lauper thus became the first female singer to have four top five singles on the Hot 100 from one album.

One of the great new wave/early MTV records, She’s So Unusual is a giddy mix of self-confidence, effervescent popcraft, unabashed sentimentality, subversiveness, and clever humor. In short, it’s a multifaceted portrait of a multifaceted talent, an artist that’s far more clever than her thin, deliberately girly voice would indicate. Then again, Lauper’s voice suits her musical persona, since its chirpiness adds depth, or reconfigures the songs, whether it’s the call to arms of “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” or the tearjerking “Time After Time.” Lauper is at her very best on the first side, all of which were singles or received airplay, and this collection of songs — “Money Changes Everything,” “Girls,” “When You Were Mine,” “Time,” “She Bop,” “All Through the Night” — is astonishing in its consistency, so strong that it makes the remaining tracks — all enjoyable, but rather pedestrian — charming by their association with songs so brilliantly alive. If Lauper couldn’t maintain this level of consistency, it’s because this captured her persona better than anyone could imagine — when a debut captures a personality so well, let alone a personality so tied to its time, the successive work can’t help but pale in comparison. Still, when it’s captured as brightly and brilliantly as it is here, it does result in a debut that retains its potency, long after its production seems a little dated.

Artist Sina Vodjani (known through his recordings for the Buddha Bar, among other productions) travelled for many weeks through his native country of Iran, following in the tracks of the Persian prophet Zarathustra – often under the most adverse of conditions. He met up with priests and local musicians in Iran and captured the audio and visual impressions using microphones, video equipment and camera.

Just who was Zoroaster? The search for the answer to this question took the Hamburg musician Sina Vodjani back to the land of his birth, Iran. Following in the tracks of the ancient Persian founder of Zoroastrianism, Sina crossed deserts and mountain regions, wandered through fertile valleys, travelled wonderful coastal regions and visited towns and cities steeped in history. He met priests and local musicians and captured the sights and sounds with microphone, camcorder and camera – creating a fascinating illustrated book beyond the “Also sprach Zarathustra” of Nietzsche and Strauss.

Shangri-La, Mark Knopfler’s fourth solo release and his first since breaking his collarbone, shoulder, and seven ribs in a motorcycle crash in March 2003, finds the eternally laid-back Dire Straits frontman in familiar territory. Instead of constructing a song cycle about his brush with mortality — the wry “Don’t Crash the Ambulance” aside — he uses his warm baritone and effortless guitar work to ruminate on everything from the plight of the modern fisherman — the beautiful and rustic “Trawlerman’s Song” — to the entrepreneurial skills of McDonald’s founder Ray Kroc (“Boom, Like That”). Knopfler has more or less abandoned the British folk and Celtic-influenced pop that began to surface on his previous two recordings, opting instead for a full-blown yet quiet and considerate collection of country-folk ballads and bluesy, midtempo dirges that revel in their uncharacteristic sparseness — one of the better examples of the latter is the gutsy, backwoods boxing tale “Song for Sonny Liston.” Knopfler spent seven months away from the guitar in physiotherapy, but his melancholic slow-burn tone is as peat-smoked as ever, and his penchant for wrapping Americana-gothic folk around subjects that are uniquely English — colliers, cockneys, the one-armed bandit man who meets his maker in the atmospheric opener, “5:15 A.M.” — is evident throughout. Dynamically, Shangri-La loses steam about three-quarters of the way through — the cringe-inducing “Whoop De Doo” and the sweet but dull “All That Matters” bring things to a sleepy halt — but Knopfler fans and lovers of Chet Atkins, Gordon Lightfoot, and J.J. Cale, as well as late-night poker players and early risers with an acerbic streak, will find much to love here.

Blood, Sweat & Tears is the second album by the band Blood, Sweat & Tears, released in 1968. It was a huge commercial success, rising to the top of the U.S. charts for seven weeks and yielding three successive Top 5 singles. It received a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1970 and has been certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA with sales of more than four million units in the U.S. The album was selected for the 2006 book “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die”.

This was Blood, Sweat & Tears’ apex, and a testimony to the best of the jazz/rock movement. Created by the legendary Al Kooper, the band was one of the major movers in the late-1960s rock scene. Though Kooper had departed after the debut album, this follow-up is bold, brassy, and adventurous, and the arrival of David Clayton-Thomas gave the band a strong singer and focal point. Eclecticism abounds, as an interpretation of an Eric Satie composition is followed by a version of Traffic’s “Smiling Phases.” Hit singles galore were culled from this record–“Spinning Wheel,” “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” and “And When I Die,”–not to mention a superb rendition of Billie Holiday’s “God Bless The Child.”

After the huge success of their previous album, Blood, Sweat & Tears 3 was highly anticipated and it rose quickly to the top of the US album chart. It also yielded two hit singles: a cover of Carole King’s “Hi-De-Ho”, and “Lucretia MacEvil”. However, the album relied heavily on cover material and it received lukewarm reviews…

Blood, Sweat & Tears had a hard act to follow in recording their third album. Nevertheless, BS&T constructed a convincing, if not quite as impressive, companion to their previous hit. David Clayton-Thomas remained an enthusiastic blues shouter, and the band still managed to put together lively arrangements, especially on the Top 40 hits “Hi-De-Ho” and “Lucretia Mac Evil.” Elsewhere, they re-created the previous album’s jazzing up of Laura Nyro (“He’s a Runner”) and Traffic (“40,000 Headmen”), although their pretentiousness, on the extended “Symphony/Sympathy for the Devil,” and their tendency to borrow other artists’ better-known material (James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain”) rather than generating more of their own, were warning signs for the future. In the meantime, BS&T 3 was another chart-topping gold hit.

Morton Gould’s Brass & Percussion is an artifact from the halcyon days of high fidelity, a lost era when “Radio Row” in New York City was bursting at the seams with shops selling every kind of cutting-edge audio gear to hi-fi enthusiasts eager to blow away their wives, neighbors, and everyone else with big audio systems. Forthwith, Brass & Percussion has a BIG sound — recorded in Manhattan Center with classic Neumann U-47 microphones and a huge symphonic band made up of crack East Coast professionals.

RCA Victor decided to commence recording in stereo starting in 1953, figuring that before long, consumer-grade systems would catch up to the technology. RCA began issuing stereo tapes in 1955; vinyl albums finally did catch up in 1958. The digital compact disc version of Brass & Percussion, compiled by RCA producer John Pfeiffer in 1993, consists of two albums. Tracks 1 through 17 originate with the 1956 mono LP Brass & Percussion issued as LM 2080, although not all of these appeared at the time. The remaining ten tracks were recorded in 1959 and are culled from LSC SD 2308, Doubling in Brass, a rare item as a vinyl album despite winning a Grammy in the engineering category. Despite its vintage, all of the selections are in stereo on the CD.

As to the performances, Morton Gould’s own original music and arrangements come off the best, with his all-percussion work Parade being an especial sonic treat. The CD version of Brass & Percussion contains 14 Sousa marches, and while they are adequate performances, the “Living Stereo” recording tends to favor the high winds, percussion, and reverberation. The interpretation of Sousa, while enthusiastic and distinctive, is not as focused as it is for the other 13 pieces. Nonetheless, Brass & Percussion is an achievement in technical terms that was second to none in its day, and listeners will hardly believe such a live-sounding, loud, and powerful recording was made five decades ago.

Reggae In High-Fi contains 15 jammin’ selections… the cream of two decades from RAS Records. RAS Records is considered the pre-eminent Reggae label today. These are the real authentic sounds and superstars of Reggae. Some of the featured artists include Black Uhuru, who was the winner of the very first Grammy for Reggae, Yellowman, who rose to superstardom as the notorious “toaster”, Israel Vibration, one of the biggest groups in Reggae today, as well as Jacob Miller, Freddie McGregor and Gregory Isaacs… all superstars and all perennial chart-toppers and more.

Some listeners love to load up their iPod or CD player and hit the random button, delighting in the juxtaposition of songs and styles that burst forth in startling sequence. Others find that extremely annoying, preferring a smooth switch in sounds and gentler progression of styles that create a sumptuous coherent set. Those latter will find this compilation irritating to say the least, as it leapfrogs across the reggae spectrum, heedless of decades, subgenres or styling. Load it up, hit random, and I’ll guarantee the result will be better sequenced. That said, there’s no arguing with the quality of the 15 tracks nor with the star appeal of all the artists featured within. The songs are all licensed from RAS Records, the American label so instrumental in seeing roots reggae and culture through the lean years of the ’80s and beyond, a musical propensity the company maintains to this day. But that isn’t to suggest this is a roots comp, although two masterpieces from Peter Broggs and Jacob Miller certainly fit that category. Even the culture icons had to move with the times, and there’s a dancehall-lite vibe to the majority of the music here, which on occasion moves straight into ragga territory. Considering both the label’s and the artists’ reputations, it’s surprising, however, that the messages mostly revolve around mashing up the dancefloor, with the DJs inevitably delivering up the most massively pleasing numbers. Regardless, with such artists as Black Uhuru, Israel Vibration, and Gregory Isaacs on board, this set truly nices up the dancehall. Magnificent music, but an odd selection nonetheless.

Tracklist:
01. Peter Broggs – Jah Jah Voice Is Calling

Art Of Noise – Reconstructed… For Your Listening Pleasure (2003)
PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DSD/DST64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 1:18:55 minutes | Scans included | 4,29 GB
Genre: Modern Classical, Downtempo, Experimental | Recorded: September 1999, March 2000 and June 2002

Trevor Horn has done it again: Inventive and great sounding multichannel mix (Dan Vickers is credited for the 5.1 mix), which you can use to impress your friends and to demonstrate the superior sound of SACD. There are several great moments on this disc, especially the beginning of “Moments in Love”, “Beat Box” or “Peter Gunn”. Your jaws are dropped, but unfortunately this does not always last throughout the whole track. An annoying singing voice or speeding up of the track does not sit well – maybe too inventive or ambitious at times? And there are definetely better tracks from AON, than selected here for this disc. Seeing (and hearing) what can be done with modern sound technology and talent, leaves you wishing for multichannel mixes of other AON masterpieces – for example a serious “reconstruction” of the great “The Best of Art of Noise – Art Works 12” CD from 1988 would be a perfect start.

Art Of Noise – Daft (1984/2008)
PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DSD64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Scans included | 4,09 GB
Genre: Electronica | Style: Leftfield, Synth-pop, Experimental

I think I own about every version of this album that was ever released, from the first Art of Noise EP “Into battle” (featured almost completely on “Daft”) which I bought on vinyl when it came out till the 20th anniversary CD on Repertoire that came with a DVD with some of AON’s groundbreaking videos early 2004.
“Daft” is my 2nd SACD and although I thought I knew every little “boing”, “duh” and other sound effect on the album, it surprised me what a difference the additional channels make. The music is litteraly all around you, the effects come from everywhere and if you close your eyes the album is like a roller coaster ride.
“Close (to the Edit)” and “Beat Box” are still the stand-out tracks, “Moments in Love” is still the only AON track in the entire AON catalogue that sounds outdated, but what a wonderful edition the SACD version is.
Blessed are the noisemakers. sa-cd.net

Caetano Veloso – A Foreign Sound (2004) [2.0 & 5.1]
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 79:09 minutes | Scans included | 4,39 GB
or FLAC 2.0 Stereo (converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | Full Scans included | 1,56 GB

When an international artist records an English-language album, crossover is usually in the cards. For Caetano Veloso, however, it’s an entirely different matter. The statesman of Brazilian pop, a musical giant who is on track to record more in his fifth decade of artistic striving than in any other (not to mention his accompanying exploits in literature), Veloso has no need to begin an American campaign. He also has shown no wish to. Caetano Veloso has never courted an American audience, though he has drawn a sizeable one because of his prescient, emotionally charged songwriting and a performance style that can be studied or unhinged depending on the circumstances required. A Foreign Sound is not only an English-language album but an American songbook, one that explores Veloso’s long fascination with the greatest composers in American history. It began when he was a child in the ’40s and ’50s enamored of American culture, was strengthened when his hero João Gilberto began championing the great American songbook, and has remained steady if not continuous through his artistic career. The record is perhaps his most ambitious project ever, a 22-song album that ranges for its material from emperors of Broadway to the denizens of folk music, from the cultured (Rodgers & Hart’s “Manhattan”) to the torchy (Jerome Kern’s “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”) to the gritty (Nirvana’s “Come as You Are”). Veloso’s high tenor has only strengthened 30 years after his other English-language record — an eponymous 1971 LP, recorded in London as a forlorn postcard to the country he had been forcibly removed from by Brazil’s fascist-leaning government. Although few recordings in his discography (or any other’s) can rival that one’s emotional power, A Foreign Sound comes very close. Veloso transforms these standards by a clever combination of his subtle interpretive gifts, his precise, literate delivery, and his ability to frame each song with an arrangement that fits perfectly (usually either a small group led by his acoustic guitar or a small string group, though “Love for Sale” is given a spine-tingling a cappella treatment). Out of 22 songs, only Bob Dylan’s “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” sounds like a mistake; every other performance here is nearly irresistible, the perfect valentine to a country with a strong songwriting tradition that Veloso unites and celebrates with this album.
