The Who – Who’s Next (1971) [Japanese Limited SHM-SACD 2010 # UIGY-9020]
PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DSD64 2.0 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 43:27 minutes | No Scans | 1,74 GB

Much of Who’s Next derives from Lifehouse, an ambitious sci-fi rock opera Pete Townshend abandoned after suffering a nervous breakdown, caused in part from working on the sequel to Tommy. There’s no discernable theme behind these songs, yet this album is stronger than Tommy, falling just behind Who Sell Out as the finest record the Who ever cut. Townshend developed an infatuation with synthesizers during the recording of the album, and they’re all over this album, adding texture where needed and amplifying the force, which is already at a fever pitch. Apart from Live at Leeds, the Who have never sounded as LOUD and unhinged as they do here, yet that’s balanced by ballads, both lovely (“The Song Is Over”) and scathing (“Behind Blue Eyes”). That’s the key to Who’s Next — there’s anger and sorrow, humor and regret, passion and tumult, all wrapped up in a blistering package where the rage is as affecting as the heartbreak. This is a retreat from the ’60s, as Townshend declares the “Song Is Over,” scorns the teenage wasteland, and bitterly declares that we “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” For all the sorrow and heartbreak that runs beneath the surface, this is an invigorating record, not just because Keith Moon runs rampant or because Roger Daltrey has never sung better or because John Entwistle spins out manic basslines that are as captivating as his “My Wife” is funny. This is invigorating because it has all of that, plus Townshend laying his soul bare in ways that are funny, painful, and utterly life-affirming. That is what the Who was about, not the rock operas, and that’s why Who’s Next is truer than Tommy or the abandoned Lifehouse. Those were art — this, even with its pretensions, is rock & roll.

This recording, though brand new, has already acquired an almost unprecedented level of historical significance. This was the orchestra that gave the first performance in the besieged city of Leningrad of Shostakovich’s profoundly moving wartime symphony. Now, sixty years later, they return to the work with which they will always be ineradicably associated in a performance of shattering power and cinematic vividness of imagery. Shostakovich’s musical depiction of the horrors and triumphs of the battlefield have never been equaled, and in this spectacular concert recording the sonic splendor of the composer’s inspiration emerges with devastating impact. Equally remarkable is the synergy between Maestro Dmitriev and the orchestra he has headed for almost thirty years, lending this recording a particular poignancy and authenticity.

A virtuoso vehicle in the tradition of Liszt and Rakhmaninov, Svetlanov’s emotionally full-blooded concerto provides the ultimate showcase for internationally renowned pianist Vladimir Ovchinnikov, who has enjoyed a meteoric career since his ground-breaking success in the 1982 Moscow Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. Alternating scintillating showmanship and genuine depth of feeling, this gorgeously seductive work is sure to delight seasoned concertgoers and newcomers alike. The richness and warmth of the Romantic tradition continues in Skryabin’s lush and dramatic Third Symphony, which links the emotionally extrovert world of Tchaikovsky to the renewed sense of spirituality essential to our time. A sonic and musical spectacular in every sense, Maestro Dmitriev and the St Petersburg Symphony wring every last ounce of passion and excitement from these thrilling scores.

The Stockholm Baroque Orchestra is a group of experienced musicians who have a special interest in the music of the Baroque and Classical periods. The orchestra has toured throughout Sweden and performed in England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Lebanon, Finland and Norway. This Surround Sound 4.0 SACD features the dance music of well-known composer Johann Sebastian Bach, and contains “Suite No. 2 In B Minor”, “Suite No. 1 in C”, “Sonata In G”, “Invention No. 8 In F” and many others.

Bach could make the most complicated fugue sound like a dance and he also wrote some of the most outstanding dance tunes of the Baroque. Stockholm Baroque Orchestra presents a highly personal interpretation of Bach’s music, evoking the atmosphere of Zimmerman’s coffee house where the composer and his friends would meet for a “jam session”.

Christoph von Dohnányi is recognized as one of the world’s most distinguished conductors. Von Dohnányi served as sixth music director of the Cleveland Orchestra from 1984 to 2002, having been appointed music director designate in 1982. He conducted the orchestra in subscription concerts, in semi-staged concert version opera performances at Severance Hall, and on domestic and international tours to Asia and Europe. He initiated a project conducting world premieres of composers from the Cleveland area. The renovation and the extension of Severance Hall, the founding of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and Youth Chorus were significant achievements during his era as music director. He recorded numerous works with the Cleveland Orchestra: CD releases by Decca feature wide ranging repertoire with works by Mozart, Mahler, Bruckner, Dvorak, Strauss, Ives, Varese, Bartok, Adams, Ruggles, Webern, Ran, Shostakovich and all Schumann symphonies. A compilation of all Beethoven symphonies was recorded by Telarc, and a collection of all Brahms symphonies by Teldec. Live radio broadcast recordings were released by the Cleveland Orchestra, one set in celebration of the orchestra’s 75th anniversary and one commemorative box upon finishing his tenure in Cleveland representing his 20 years as music director. In 2002, he was named the first music director laureate of the Cleveland Orchestra. Since ending his tenure in Cleveland, von Dohnányi has been a regular guest conductor with the Boston Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Chicago Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as the Cleveland Orchestra.

In 1970, Elektra Records released a Doors hits collection called 13. In 1971, the Doors scored two more hits, “Love Her Madly” and “Riders on the Storm,” and their lead singer, Jim Morrison, died. In 1972, Elektra released a two-LP anthology containing “Love Her Madly” and “Riders on the Storm,” along with a lot of album tracks. But there was no single-LP compilation that contained all the Doors’ hits, from “Light My Fire” to “Riders on the Storm.” This 11-track 1973 album was an attempt to address that problem, and at the time of its release, containing seven of the Doors’ eight Top 40 hits (the exception being “The Unknown Soldier”), it was the best Doors greatest-hits collection on the market.

While nothing soared as high as “Everybody Plays a Fool” from the Bitter Sweet LP, Euphrates River is tighter and has more zap than the previous year’s beautiful but hitless Afrodisiac. They nailed Seals & Croft’s “Summer Breeze” — the New Yorkers almost surpassed the Isley Brothers’ soulful version. Cuba Gooding sings the upbeat and funky “California My Way” from the heart (the soul singer moved his family to L.A. — the only Main Ingredient to do so). The trio gives Stevie Wonder’s “Don’t You Worry About a Thing” all they can muster; this is an excellent rendition that should have done better on the charts. Their version of “Just Don’t Want to Be Lonely” helped sell this LP; it was previously done by Blue Magic and Ronnie Dyson, but the Main Ingredient’s version reigns supreme. Rolling, midtempo beaters make up the bulk of the tunes with “Euphrates” and “Happiness Is Just Around the Bend” as prime examples.

Pianist Oscar Peterson has long been such a consistent performer that none of his records are throwaways, but this particular set is weaker than most. Since several of the songs are the type that in the mid-’60s would get requested (such as “People,” “The Girl from Ipanema,” and “The Days of Wine and Roses”), the program would not seem to have much potential, but Peterson mostly uplifts the material (although not much could be done with “People”) and adds a few songs (such as his own “Goodbye, J.D.” and John Lewis’ “D & E”). Overall, this is a reasonably enjoyable Oscar Peterson session, featuring bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen.

The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band formed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington. Founded by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, the group in its various incarnations has had an enduring impact on the development of music worldwide. With over 100 million records sold, the group is the best-selling instrumental band of all time. In 2008, the Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their instrumental virtuosity, experimentation with guitar effects, and unique sound laid the groundwork for innumerable groups, earning them the moniker “The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands”. While their popularity in the United States waned in the 1970s, the group remains revered in Japan, where they tour regularly to this day.

The Weavers celebrated their 15th anniversary by performing two concerts – May 2 and 3, 1963 – at Carnegie Hall, the site of their historic 1955 comeback concert, and invited back former members Pete Seeger and Erik Darling, as well as introducing new member Bernie Krause. The shows served to reaffirm the status of a group that had fostered the folk boom of the late ’50s and early ’60s, yet had been bypassed by it as others scored with their songs, notably Peter, Paul and Mary, who had taken the early Weavers song “If I Had a Hammer” into the Top Ten. The group reclaimed that song and others, such as “Wimoweh” (pilfered by the Tokens as “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”); performed their own old hits, such as “Goodnight, Irene,” and covered such new material as Tom Paxton’s “Ramblin’ Boy” (actually a solo performance by Seeger). On record, the numerous lead singers make the show sound more like a folk festival than a performance by one group, but this remains a spirited effort very much in tune with the first Carnegie Hall show.

Black & White Night, the live album, was compiled and released posthumously from the television special. The album was released in February 1989 and included the songs “Blue Bayou” and “Claudette” that were cut from the original broadcast for time. However it did not include the song “Blue Angel” which was cut from the original broadcast for the same reason.

The best-recorded Roy Orbison live disc ever issued, taken from the soundtrack of the HBO concert from the 1980s with VIP guests like Bruce Springsteen and Elvis Costello. This was a sort of magical video, and the performances are splendid, along with the good feelings involved. On the other hand, the performances are extremely reverential to the established studio versions of the songs (all of the hits are here), and intended to mimic them, so this isn’t quite the same as a live album as it would have been done back when. The pity is that neither Monument nor MGM ever taped any complete concerts by Orbison from the 1960s, and all that remains are TV appearances from Europe.

Ain’t Nothin’ Stoppin’ Us Now is an album by American R&B band Tower of Power released in 1976, their first record on Columbia Records. Ron Beck takes up the drummers spot after David Garibaldi exited for a second time. This also would be the last album to feature bassist Francis “Rocco” Prestia as he would go on an extended hiatus from the band until his return in 1986. It is also the only album to feature vocalist Edward McGee.

Edward McGee turned in mostly above-average performances on their first post-Lenny Williams release, but it was the beginning of the end for the group. With funk losing its foothold among R&B audiences, they couldn’t keep it together. Hearing this on compact disc (and it’s not one of Columbia’s better mastering jobs) reveals that McGee was an energetic, exuberant vocalist who held his own on uptempo tunes like “You Ought To Be Havin’ Fun” and the title song, but lacked Williams’ range or tonal quality on ballads. The group always had a weakness for ponderous message cuts, and “Can’t Stand To See The Slaughter” and “While We Went To The Moon” were well-intentioned but clumsy tracks. This was almost The Tower of Power’s swan song.

From January to December 1974, pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and his trio performed daily in a jazz club called Misty that had a full-size New York Steinway concert grand. Producer of Three Blind Mice Takeshi Fujii heard him there, fell in love, and made his hugely successful debut album Midnight Sugar in the spring of the same year. Yamamoto had already recorded his second album Misty, and his year at Misty was winding down. For the third album to be recorded in a year, Fujii decided to capture the trio live in their “everyday setting.”

On Christmas day, 1974, the trio with guest conga player brought the house down with uplifting numbers and soulful ballads. Engineer Yoshihiko Kannari used just six microphones for all instruments, and three for capturing the sounds of the audience. The result is a remarkable, groovy live recording with a strong “you are there” feeling.

Autumn In Seattle is a world class smooth jazz album from peerless Japanese jazz pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto. Along with bassist Ken Kaneko and drummer Toshio Osumi, he has transformed this program of famous film themes into captivatingly beautiful jazz pieces.

Pianist Tsuyoshi Yamamoto has been a jazz artist for decades, and in ‘01 Winston persuaded him to do new renditions of some of his most-popular material for the album Autumn in Seattle. His accompanists are Ken Kaneko on bass and Toshio Osumi on drums. Winston describes the title tune as “warm, peaceful, even romantic,” and that pretty much sums all the music on the disc.

The first item is Marvin Hamlisch’s “The Way We Were” from the 1973 movie of the same name. The manner in which Yamamoto plays it, it sounds as laid back and friendly as most of us remember it from the film. Even more easygoing is Burt Bacharach’s “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head” from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which takes flight from the outset under Yamamoto and never lets go.

Then we come to the title tune itself, “Autumn in Seattle,” which Yamamoto wrote specifically for the album. It’s sweetly atmospheric, and like the other numbers, it is all Yamamoto and his piano, which is lightly resonant and expressively lyrical. He follows “Autumn” with “Misty,” a perennial favorite, only this time he takes it at a “more energetic,” upbeat tempo than he says he usually does. His seeming improvisations breathe new life into an old warhorse, and he allows his sidemen to introduce the piece. Although it won’t be to everyone’s liking because the cherished melody is often hardly discernible, it does take on a pleasant verve of its own.

And so it goes through another half dozen tunes, mostly music from motion pictures: “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing,” the theme from Spartacus, a medley from The Sound of Music, “A Time for Us” from Romeo and Juliet, and one of own preferences, “As Time Goes By,” featured in Casablanca. Dooley Wilson, who couldn’t play the piano, would have been proud.

Probably the best, and best-sounding, track in the album, though, is “No Problem,” which Yamamoto says inspired him in high school to become a jazz pianist after hearing a version by Art Blakey. The tune allows Yamamoto to demonstrate a wide flexibility of tone and color and provides opportunity for his accompanists to shine as well.

FIM made the recording in 2001 in Onkio Haus, Tokyo, Japan, and audio engineer Michael Bishop remastered it in 2011 via FIM’s UltraHD 32-bit processing system. The original analog recording, done on a Studer A829, is extremely plush and very dynamic, with good air, ambience, and transparency. The piano sounds especially lifelike in its transient response, and the music exhibits taut bass and extended highs.

an heroic comedy in five acts | Features Stereo and Multichannel surround sound

Massenet’s Don Quichotte has never quite established itself in the repertoire, not because of any deficit in the music, but because it’s not immediately evident exactly what it is dramatically; is it a comedy or tragedy or some more subtle blend of the two? The last option seems to reflect the usual approach to it, which makes it a hard sell for audiences. Valery Gergiev clearly envisions it a comedy, though one with a poignant ending, and the certainty of his vision make this an exceptionally compelling and coherent presentation of the opera. His position is supported by the program notes, which point out the extent to which Massenet filled the score with tongue-in-cheek parodies of operatic conventions, such as his send-up of Gounod’s pieties in the Don’s fervent entreaty to the Chief of the Bandits. Gergiev’s reading is energetically paced, and the vivacious playing and singing of the Mariinsky Orchestra and the Soloists’ Ensemble of the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers convey boisterous vitality. This is one version of the opera that avoids the mawkish sentimentality to which most performances fall prey. Mezzo-soprano Anna Kiknadze is a youthful, warmly seductive, and high-spirited Dulcinée; her portrayal suggests what Carmen might have been like had she had a more bourgeois upbringing and better impulse control. Her full, colorful voice and lively acting makes it easy to imagine her as a vivid Carmen. Ferruccio Furlanetto has established himself as master of tragic Verdi roles like King Philip in Don Carlos and Silva in Ernani. He may not have the vocal gravitas of singers like Chaliapin and Christoff in the role, but he has plenty of power and he’s a terrific actor. He excels in comedy and convincingly establishes the tricky balance between the Don’s frail dignity and absurdity, and he makes him a character who’s not only sympathetic but believable. As Sancho, Andrei Serov, sings robustly and is an effective foil to Furlanetto. The smaller roles are consistently well taken. Although there are no French performers involved in the opera, Gergiev draws out performances that are idiomatically Gallic. The sound of Mariinsky’s SACD is well balanced, very clean, and clearly detailed. Overall, this exemplary performance makes the most compelling recorded case for Don Quichotte as an opera that deserves a place in the more standard repertoire.
