While their subsequent chart-topping albums would contain far more ambitious songwriting and musicianship, the Police’s 1978 debut, Outlandos d’Amour (translation: Outlaws of Love) is by far their most direct and straightforward release. Although Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland were all superb instrumentalists with jazz backgrounds, it was much easier to get a record contract in late-’70s England if you were a punk/new wave artist, so the band decided to mask their instrumental prowess with a set of strong, adrenaline-charged rock, albeit with a reggae tinge. Some of it may have been simplistic (“Be My Girl-Sally,” “Born in the ’50s”), but Sting was already an ace songwriter, as evidenced by all-time classics like the good-girl-gone-bad tale of “Roxanne,” and a pair of brokenhearted reggae-rock ditties, “Can’t Stand Losing You” and “So Lonely.” But like all other Police albums, the lesser-known album cuts are often highlights themselves — the frenzied rockers “Next to You,” “Peanuts,” and “Truth Hits Everybody,” as well as more exotic fare like the groovy album closer “Masoko Tanga” and the lonesome “Hole in My Life.” Outlandos d’Amour is unquestionably one of the finest debuts to come out of the ’70s punk/new wave movement.

This 1967 album from Charles Aznavour contains a balanced blend of some of the singer’s lesser known songs along with one of his best known tracks, later the single “Emmenez-Moi” which was translated into English and recorded by Aznavour under the title “Take Me Along”.

Charles Aznavour once said that if he showed up to work in a wharehouse, nobody would be surprize. The analogy is to tell you that a singer also does his homework each year by releasing an album. In the sixties, singers usually did two albums each year. Those 1967-68 recordings may not be on the list of his top ten, but if you are a big fan, you can go for it. Aznavour re-recorded in that era many of his earliest songs; here’s four including “J’ Al Bu” that he mentions in his autobiography as being his first song. I am surprized that “Éteins La Lumière”, “Caroline” and “Le Cabotin” are not better known. “Le Cabotin” is an archetypical Aznavour song that clicks with a beautiful release. Je M’Voyais Déjá (It Will Be My Day), originally released on January 1961, is the seventh French studio album by the French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour. The album’s title track is considered one of Charles Aznavour’s breakthrough songs, responsible for the international success that ensued. As a means of promoting a DVD reissue of Jean-Luc Godard’s 1970 film Sympathy for the Devil (which depicts the 1968 recording session that produced the Rolling Stones’ song), ABCKO Records has released this seven-track CD single, running over 38 minutes, which contains remixes of “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Neptunes, Fatboy Slim, and Full Phatt (each presented in a “Radio Remix” and a “Full Length Remix”), plus the original Stones track. Since the song has a distinctive percussion part played by Stones drummer Charlie Watts and conga player Rocky Dijon, it’s interesting that all the remixers begin by eliminating that part. But then, that’s in the nature of the “remix” business, which tends to involve newly recorded rhythm tracks. the Neptunes retain Mick Jagger’s vocal and Keith Richards’ guitar solos, their new underlying track at first having an Indian flavor complete with sitar licks. Halfway through, a backing of acoustic guitar and string-like sounds replaces the Indian track. Fatboy Slim likes Nicky Hopkins’ piano part and keeps it along with the vocal, laying in a characteristic stop-and-start electronica percussion part. Full Phatt is also fond of the original piano, and his percussion track has a more bass-heavy feel. Of course, when the original recording comes on at the end, it wipes the floor with the remixers.

Count Basie and the Kansas City 7 is an album by American jazz bandleader and pianist Count Basie featuring small group performances recorded in 1962 for the Impulse! label. The Allmusic review by Scott Yanow awarded the album 4 stars stating “One of Count Basie’s few small-group sessions of the ’60s was his best”.

With trumpeter Thad Jones and tenors Frank Foster and Eric Dixon filling in the septet, Basie is in superlative form on a variety of blues, standards and two originals apiece from Thad Jones and Frank Wess. Small-group swing at its best.

Frank Sinatra’s collaborations with Count Basie were among the singer’s better ventures back into jazz in the early 1960s, and led not only to a couple of great studio albums, and one superb live Sinatra album, but also to Basie’s being signed to the Sinatra-founded Reprise label in the mid-’60s. The 53 minutes of music captured on Live at the Sands was recorded during the opening sets from three different shows in late January and early February of 1966, by Basie and his band during the engagement with Sinatra at the Sands Hotel that yielded that live Sinatra album. Maybe that raises the expectations, because this release is a slight disappointment — the band sounds OK, but except for Basie himself and drummer Sonny Payne, it seems like they’re walking their way through some of this repertoire. There are a number of good moments here: “I Needs to Be Bee’d With,” “Flight of the Foo Birds,” “Satin Doll,” “Blues for Home,” and “This Could Be the Start of Something Big” (which is worth hearing for the ensemble work and Eric Dixon and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis’ solos); the band finally takes flight, but compared with some of the recordings of complete shows by Basie that are nothing less than great, a lot of this is secondary. Given the fact that it was Sinatra’s set that was going to be taped for release for certain, the band may, indeed, have been holding back during its own set, for good reason. Even the audience response says it, positive and polite but not excessive — they were there for Sinatra, and nothing Basie and company did were likely to bowl them over, so why make the effort? It’s not a bad set, and some of it — “Makin’ Whoopee” (especially the call and response on the piano), “Corner Pocket,” and “Jumpin’ at the Woodside” — has great appeal. But this is overall a legendary band doing a somewhat less-than-legendary set, during some gigs that, in fairness, yielded up a great live album elsewhere. The quality is solid live sound, in crisp stereo from a nicely controlled mid-’60s venue, using state-of-the-art equipment.

Over an hour of the most beloved Russian orchestral showpieces, in performances worthy of a great maestro & his orchestra. Arthur Fiedler & the Boston Pops perform orchestral works from composers Alexander Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Aram Khachaturian, & Tchaikovsky. DSD remastering brilliantly reproduces the superb sound quality of the original master tapes.

While by no means bad performances, the performances on Pops Caviar — Russian Orchestral Fireworks are by no means good performances, either. They have, like Nietzsche’s übermensch, transcended concepts like good and bad because they are, from conception to execution, pops performances, specifically, Boston Pops under Arthur Fiedler performances. For listeners who don’t immediately recall the series of pops recordings Fiedler made for RCA in the ’50s and ’60s with the Boston Symphony Orchestra re-named the Boston Pops Orchestra, the difference between the BSO and the BPO is not one of quality — good, bad, or mediocre — but of brow — high, middle, or low. As the BPO demonstrates here in works by Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, and Khachaturian, this difference means the difference between clean, full strings and sweet, lush strings; between warmly characterful winds and colorfully blended winds; between clear, strong brass and big, bold brass; and, especially, between suave, polished percussion and gargantuan, bludgeoning percussion. In other words, the quality of the playing is still first-rate, but the quality is aimed at what used to be called a middle-brow audience, an audience that knew what it liked and what it liked was loud, colorful, and a bit sexy. Fiedler is a more than capable conductor who leads performances notable more for their excitement than for their subtly: listen to the brilliant balances in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Russian Easter Overture or the driven tempos in Borodin’s Polovetsian Dances. These are the performances to get if you’re looking for excitement and thrills, but if you’re looking for performances with as much excitement but more subtlety, try Gergiev and the Kirov Orchestra’s recordings on Philips. Gergiev believes in the quality of Borodin’s gloriously lyrical melodies and Rimsky-Korsakov’s incandescent colors, and his recordings are as thrilling as performances as they are compelling as interpretations. RCA’s remastering of the original living stereo sound reproduces the flash of the LPs, but lacks some of the depth.

Drawing from two sides of the musical spectrum–Tango and Baroque–comes Lara St. John’s newest recording, featuring the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela and Eduardo Marturet. The disc features Vivaldi’s seminal work, the Four Seasons, which is the top-selling classical work of all time, paired with The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Astor Piazzola’s tribute to Vivaldi. There is tremendous interest in this orchestra, and this is the first time it has recorded with the Ancalagon label following successful recordings with the Deutsche Grammophon label.

Lara St. John is a dynamic violinist, performing music of several genres and eras, and founder of the Ancalagon label.

Joining together Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires on a single disc was an excellent idea. Providing the musicians with lush sound and beautiful productions values was likewise an excellent idea. Unfortunately, the actual performances are less than excellent. Indeed, they might be most positively characterized as superficial and mediocre. Lara St. John, the charismatic Canadian violinist, has the technique to play Vivaldi’s four violin concertos — not much of an achievement since these are not particularly challenging works — but despite her hyper-expressive phrasing, St. John’s interpretations are nothing special. Her “Spring” is more dutiful than joyful, her “Summer” more soporific than sultry, her “Autumn” tart more than sweet, and her

“Winter” chilly to the point of coldness. Worse yet, St. John does not quite have the technique to play Piazzolla’s much more demanding music, and her accounts are scrappy and sloppy. What’s more, she seems to have less feel for Piazzolla than for Vivaldi, and her interpretations lack understanding of the Argentine composer’s feel for rhythm or melody. Accompanied with much spirit but less polish by the Youth Orchestra of Venezuela under the direction of Eduardo Marturet, St. John’s performances here will mostly likely be of interest only to her fans.

Ricky Martin’s second English-language album Sound Loaded did not fare nearly as well as its earth-shattering predecessor, even though the quality of the material is probably one notch higher. Several reasons could be given for this, but the most obvious is lousy marketing. First, the album’s lead-off single, the electrifying (and terribly titled) “She Bangs” (arguably one of the best songs of 2000), which failed to make the U.S. Top Ten, wasn’t even released as a commercial single. Second, the album’s follow-up, “Nobody Wants to Be Lonely,” was remixed and refashioned into a duet with red-hot Anglo-Latina vixen Christina Aguilera — the album version is solo Ricky, and features largely acoustic accompaniment, as opposed to the remix’s more bombastic instrumentation. Unbelievably, the version with Christina Aguilera wasn’t released as a commercial single. Instead, the album was re-released with a single of the song clumsily attached to it (with a rubber band, no less). In other words, most of Ricky’s fans, who had already bought the album, would have had to purchase it all over again in order to have the hit version of the song. And thirdly, the set’s final single, “Loaded” (which was actually released commercially, indicating a base level of intelligence on the label’s part), bore more than a striking resemblance to his breakthrough hit “Livin’ la Vida Loca,” but, by the time of its release, the magic had petered off. Those factors aside, the album is a lushly produced set, with more Latin-flavored dance cuts, such as the fun, Santana-ish “Amor,” the smoldering, string-enhanced “Jezabel,” the endearing “If You Ever Saw Her,” and the sizzling Spanish-language track “Cambia La Piel.” The ballads, however, tend to weigh the album down, such as the unmemorable “Come to Me” and “The Touch.” And, finally, Latin loverman clichés abound, which bring down otherwise fine tracks such as “Saint Tropez” and the gypsy-tinged, slightly bizarre “One Night Man.” Infinitely better marketing and less reliance on clichés will hopefully translate into better sales for Ricky Martin’s future English-language albums, but, for the time being, Sound Loaded, an otherwise fine album (and exquisitely produced), will go down in history as something of an undeserved flop.
