Coasting on the success of Some Girls, the Stones offered more of the same on Emotional Rescue. Comprised of leftovers from the previous album’s sessions and hastily written new numbers, Emotional Rescue may consist mainly of filler, but it’s expertly written and performed filler. the Stones toss off throwaways like the reggae-fueled, mail-order bride anthem “Send It to Me” or rockers like “Summer Romance” and “Where the Boys Go” with an authority that makes the record a guilty pleasure, even if it’s clear that only two songs — the icy but sexy disco-rock of “Emotional Rescue” and the revamped Chuck Berry rocker “She’s So Cold” — come close to being classic Stones.

While their subsequent chart-topping albums would contain far more ambitious songwriting and musicianship, the Police’s 1978 debut, Outlandos d’Amour (translation: Outlaws of Love) is by far their most direct and straightforward release. Although Sting, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland were all superb instrumentalists with jazz backgrounds, it was much easier to get a record contract in late-’70s England if you were a punk/new wave artist, so the band decided to mask their instrumental prowess with a set of strong, adrenaline-charged rock, albeit with a reggae tinge. Some of it may have been simplistic (“Be My Girl-Sally,” “Born in the ’50s”), but Sting was already an ace songwriter, as evidenced by all-time classics like the good-girl-gone-bad tale of “Roxanne,” and a pair of brokenhearted reggae-rock ditties, “Can’t Stand Losing You” and “So Lonely.” But like all other Police albums, the lesser-known album cuts are often highlights themselves — the frenzied rockers “Next to You,” “Peanuts,” and “Truth Hits Everybody,” as well as more exotic fare like the groovy album closer “Masoko Tanga” and the lonesome “Hole in My Life.” Outlandos d’Amour is unquestionably one of the finest debuts to come out of the ’70s punk/new wave movement.

Classic Yo-Yo is a greatest-hits collection for the famous Yo-Yo Ma, something he’s fully entitled to after two decades of runaway success. It’s “Classic Yo-Yo” in the sense that it presents well-loved and presumably durable selections from a variety of Yo-Yo Ma albums, not because it inclines toward Ma’s straight-ahead classical recordings. In fact the division between classical and crossover pieces on the disc is about 50/50, and they tend to alternate. The transition from Bach to Astor Piazzolla works OK, but that from Appalachian Journey mastermind Edgar Meyer to Brahms might be a bit jarring. A greatest-hits album is a tough item for Ma because his recordings are so different from one another and involve such a variety of other musicians. As Ma himself says in an interview included in the liner material, “Collaboration is the best part of what I do, it’s what I enjoy most about being a musician”.

Here’s the bottom line. Ma is a rare treasure of classical music, perhaps the only musician active today who can connect with a wide public in the way that was second nature to the great instrumentalists of the past. This disc serves as a sampler of his work. If you’re new to Ma, or if you perhaps own one or two of his albums and want to hear what he sounds like playing Bach or country-inspired music or tango or Gershwin or John Williams or Rachmaninov, Classic Yo-Yo is for you. As a way of reliving great moments in Ma’s recording career it is partially successful. It indicates something of the wonderful breadth of his musical interests, but it is less able to show how well he has realized the musical concepts he has undertaken. Still, several previously unreleased tracks will make Classic Yo-Yo attractive for Ma’s confirmed fans. A hauntingly spare duo with bluegrass chanteuse Alison Krauss on the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts” is an especially nice bonus.

Yo-Yo Ma, one of the best-known classical cellists of the recording era, whose crossover releases have spanned the world, bluegrass, and soundtrack charts. In this context “obrigado” means “thank you” in Portuguese.

As a cultural ambassador to the world, Yo-Yo Ma has immersed himself in the native music of many countries and taken away charming souvenirs of his musical explorations that he shares openly and without affectation. The chief characteristic of Ma’s approach is his showcasing of other talents, with a modesty and generosity on his part that makes these performances all the more appealing. In Obrigado Brazil, Ma shares the spotlight with musicians of the highest caliber, including bossa nova singer Rosa Passos, guitar duo Sergio and Odair Assad, clarinetist Paquito d’Rivera, pianist Kathryn Stott, and percussionist Cyro Baptista, among many other stars. All the performers display deep feeling, energy, and conviviality, no doubt inspired by Ma’s infectious goodwill and openhearted playing. Whether he engages the listener with popular numbers, such as the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Pixinguinha, or with more classically tailored pieces by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Camargo Guarneri, and Egberto Gismonti, Ma offers a broad sampling of Brazil’s diverse musical styles. From sorrowful choros to lively sambas, the spectrum of the country’s music is well represented, and there is something here to please any armchair traveler. Sony’s recording is excellent, with special attention directed to capturing instrumental color.

This disc is sort of Yo-Yo’s virtuoso collection. The album is comprised largely of fairly mindless music, but at least Ma manages to make things interesting. Most of these works are played extremely well – his cello arrangement of the Dvorak-Kriesler “Songs my mother taught me” is stunning, and if the octaves (and a bit of other passagework) in the Paganani 24th caprice are out of tune, that track still serves as a tribute to his incredible technical skill. Still, some of this music (such as “The Swan”) is too overplayed to be truly enjoyable at this point, and now that he has two separate sets of complete Bach Suites released (neither of which I’d recommend), the last thing anyone needs to hear is an early recording of the Bourrees from Suite 3. The highlight is his Haydn D major concerto, which is given a simple treatment here, and it works. So crisp and clean is his playing that little else is required, from him or the orchestra, and the result is an incredibly refined performance.

The idea here was to put two masters together–one classical cellist, one improvisational singer/sound-effects performer–and voilà! instant amazing, unique, hip–and, hopefully, hit–record. The intriguing setup was to see what would happen when each led the other through the unfamiliar territory of his own specialty. The success of this recording lies not so much in the music or even in the overall performances, but in the fascinating and fun opportunity to sit in on the musicians’ good-natured, respectful give-and-take, to witness an uncommon form of artistic chemistry that allows each performer to expand his vision and even his technique. On one hand we get Bobby McFerrin’s impressionistic, improvisatory jazz/pop; on the other we enjoy Yo-Yo Ma’s highly refined, formalized musicianship.

A surprisingly good collaboration from two virtuosos of their given instruments. Bobby McFerrin, the master of the voice, and Yo-yo Ma, the master of the cello, combined to perform various pieces, from classical, traditional, and contemporary classical sectors. Some of the McFerrin compositions are quite amazing simply as compositions to begin with, but when the cello and vocal performances are added, they become something even more exciting. More than likely, the main highlight on the album is Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee,” which is performed on a dual line by both musicians and allows an ample chance to note the amazing virtuosity of McFerrin, once you can distinguish the voice from the cello (yes, they follow the lines that close). For any fan of either musician, it’s a wonderful find of an album.

This disc introduces Yo-Yo Ma’s latest and most ambitious adventure, the Silk Road Project. It explores the cultures that flourished along the Silk Road, the ancient trade route that for centuries connected Europe and the East. Founded by Ma in 1998, the project aims to create connections, mutual trust, and cultural interchange between people from different parts of the world through their only shared language: music. This recording includes music from Mongolia, China, Persia, Japan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and an improvisation on an Italian Renaissance street song, performed by musicians from all those countries, as well as America, on both Eastern and Western instruments.

Ma, who participates in every piece either as soloist or part of the ensemble, plays cello and a Mongolian “horse-head fiddle.” There is also a Mongolian soprano, who sings a traditional song native to her region. For the uninitiated Western listener, the music requires some getting used to. Much of it is based on rhythmic ostinatos. The melodies use Oriental scales; the intonation is untempered; the music seems all color, texture, and atmosphere, without what might be called themes; and repetition takes the place of development. Contrast is achieved through sudden change, buildup by adding instruments. However, the music is often beautiful, delicate, dreamy, or peaceful; every listener will find his or her own favorite pieces. The playing is splendid, with much inventive improvisation. Inevitably, Ma’s tone and personality stand out, but he never dominates in fact or spirit. The booklet offers essays by Ma and the project’s musicologist, Theodore Levin, photographs of the players, and drawings of the Eastern instruments.

Recorded as part of the ongoing Silk Road Project, Silk Road Journeys brings together composers from the elusive, ancient Silk Road that crosses from China to the Middle East with musicians from both West and East. It’s both ambitious and daring, two qualities that have been trademarks of Yo-Yo Ma’s career. For its modernity and mix of Asian and Western instruments, though, it hews close to tradition (and not merely on Mongolian Traditional Long Song), although the departure into the Italian Renaissance for Chi Passa Per’sta Strada makes for an interesting, more formal and graceful aid in the whole. But the multicultural Silk Road itself makes for a good metaphor for this album, with the sheng, an ancient form of mouth organ, alongside the cello on the traditional Blue Little Flower, for example. While it might seem strange to find Michio Mamiya’s Five Finnish Folksongs here, it makes sense; the Saami people of Finland were nomadic, and traveled as far as the Silk Road. But the instruments, from Wu Man’s pipa to Joel Fan’s piano, work together, whether on traditional or commissioned material, to create something that’s challenging to both listeners and performers and offers a strong impression of the journeys of the past.

This release takes us to the fashionable salons of late 19th-century Paris. Superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott partner in this album of elegant French chamber music aptly titled “Paris: La Belle Époque”. The recording features a combination of major works and well-known shorter pieces, all transcribed from their original versions for violin. The Faure Violin Sonata #1 and Franck Violin Sonata in A Major both take on a rich, warm character in cello transcription, and Massenet’s ever-popular “Meditation from Thais” and Saint-Saens’ exotic Havanaise work equally well as arranged by Ma. The cello and piano playing are both top-notch in this recording – refined and elegant overall, yet dramatic and exciting when called for (particularly in the Franck). It’s not surprising that Stott and Ma’s previous collaboration, “Soul of the Tango”, won a Grammy.

Tracklist:

01. Massenet: Meditation from Thaïs
02. Fauré: Sonata No. 1 in A Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 13 – Allegro molto
03. Fauré: Sonata No. 1 in A Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 13 – II. Andante

It was only a matter of time before the remarkable Yo-Yo Ma went along with the tide and dipped his talent into the so-called authentic instrument movement. On this recital, abetted by Ton Koopman–one of the most respected names in early-music practice–Ma plays Bach and Boccherini. The Bach are all transcriptions and very fine ones, indeed–the alto aria “Erbarme Dich” from the St. Matthew Passion; the equally famous “Air on a G String” from the Third Orchestral Suite; Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring; and six others, most less well-known. These are followed by two fascinating cello concertos by Boccherini, made all the more interesting by Koopman’s cadenzas, which are pretty outrageous. Throughout, Ma’s stunning virtuosity is matched by his taste and musicality. The Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra plays handsomely, and the recorded sound is warm and full. “Authentic” or not, this is mighty fine playing, and wait till you hear those cadenzas.

Yo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences, and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Whether performing new or familiar works from the cello repertoire, coming together with colleagues for chamber music or exploring cultures and musical forms outside the Western classical tradition, Mr. Ma strives to find connections that stimulate the imagination. Very Japanese release. Traditional instruments along with Yo-Yo Ma, lovely to just let play in the background.

Audio Fidelity SACD #AFZ-016 | Remastered for SACD by Steve Hoffman

By the time this was released in 2001, John Mayall was more known for the people who played in his seminal British band, the Bluesbreakers rather than his own accomplishments. The success of 1999’s Padlock on the Blues afforded Mayall the opportunity to fulfill his dreams and gather an all-star lineup of blues and rock luminaries. “A World of Hurt” and “That’s Why I Love You So” both typify the good but not great groove that permeates Along for the Ride. Better tracks “Yo Yo Man” and “Early in the Morning” are easygoing blues that feature the great rhythm section of John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. Fellow Fleetwood Mac and Bluesbreaker alum, the reclusive Peter Green plays acoustic slide guitar on “Yo-Yo Man.” “So Many Roads” has Mayall dueting with Otis Rush, and it soon becomes a contest on who sounds more disgruntled. The playful “Testify” features vocals and subtle guitar lines from blues phenom Shannon Curfman. This ends on the strong note. The powerful and wry “She Don’t Play By the Rules” has Mayall with arguably the strongest and most subtle band with Mick Taylor on lead guitar and Andy Fairweather Low on acoustic guitar. Along for the Ride is produced, engineered, and mixed by David Z. Despite the camaraderie, a lot of the hooks here don’t stick, and fans of Mayall and superstar sessions will get the most from this effort.

Pentangle (or The Pentangle) are a British folk-jazz band with an eclectic mix of folk, jazz, blues and folk rock influences. The original band was active in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and a later version has been active since the early 1980s. Their debut album “The Pentangle” brought together their separate influences of folk, jazz, blues, early music and contemporary songwriting. One of the band’s most commercially successful albums, it reached number 21 in the British charts.

Were Pentangle a folk group, a folk-rock group, or something that resists classification? They could hardly be called a rock & roll act; they didn’t use electric instruments often, and were built around two virtuoso guitarists, Bert Jansch and John Renbourn, who were already well-established on the folk circuit before the group formed. Yet their hunger for eclectic experimentation fit into the milieu of late-’60s progressive rock and psychedelia well, and much of their audience came from the rock and pop worlds, rather than the folk crowd. With Jacqui McShee on vocals and a rhythm section of Danny Thompson (bass) and Terry Cox (drums), the group mastered a breathtaking repertoire that encompassed traditional ballads, blues, jazz, pop, and reworkings of rock oldies, often blending different genres in the same piece. Their prodigious individual talents perhaps ensured a brief lifespan, but at their peak they melded their distinct and immense skills to egg each other on to heights they couldn’t have achieved on their own, in the manner of great rock combos like the Beatles and Buffalo Springfield.

There’s something exciting about the first album of a band that goes on to greatness, and The Pentangle, by the group of the same name, is no different. Here, the listener witnesses the first studio work of a band struggling to get their essence down on vinyl. Of course Bert Jansch and John Renbourn’s reputations as guitarists preceded the band, but the addition of bassist Danny Thompson and drummer Terry Cox gave the band an acoustic rhythm section like no other folk-rock group. Singer Jacqui McShee became the last piece of this intricate English puzzle, delivering high, expressive vocals that contrasted and merged so well with Jansch’s deeper pipes. The group doesn’t hold back on their first outing. On “Hear My Call” McShee offers a dreamy vocal, floating high above the bluesy guitars. The soaring vocal and firmly grounded rhythm highlight one another, creating a carefully layered sound that is present in all of Pentangle’s best music. This dynamic works equally well in “Pentangling,” with McShee and Jansch’s voices combining light and dark shadows to concoct a strangely atmospheric harmony. The rocking and rollicking “Way Behind the Sun” is another standout, and the instrumentals “Bells” and “Waltz” are complex and lively. The album’s spacious arrangements take full advantage of stereo, mixing instruments to different tracks so that the listener, for instance, can always hear Jansch’s guitar on one side and Renbourn’s on the other. This group, it seems, had it all. Equally comfortable with traditional songs, instrumentals, and originals, they made few missteps on their early albums. Like Fairport Convention and the Incredible String Band, Pentangle specialized in updating British Isles’ folk music.

Guitarist Yoshio Kimura was the pride of Japanese music circles, for his consummate performance techniques, unique arrangement skill and giving the audiences extraordinary sense of hearing, and known as the Japanese guitar Emperor’s virtuoso. He applied the crafted skills to turn traditional pieces into unique style and exciting songs, created a wonderful guitar world with his hands and wisdom.

Yoshio Kimura liked music when he was a little child, and the beautiful music is his lifetime pursuit. In his early musical career, Kimura just played jazz. Because jazz is full of passion, dynamic and personality; Besides, the unique rhythm of jazz and close to the life improvisation is also popular with people, specially favored by active young people. But this kind of music is over passion and exposed personality, which is not in accord with the features of Japanese contained, introverted temperament. So later Kimura chose to play folk songs which were more suitable for the Japanese national character, and won the whole of Japan, Southeast Asia and even the people of the world’s favorite. Some people says: Kimura’s performances have become a common memory of the times. Yoshio Kimura is an outstanding performance artist, his works not only exist in the twentieth century Asian music, also will be like our country masterpiece “lofty mountains and flowing water”, as works of the European classical music Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky and other musicians, always exist in the eternal love of thousands of households.
